Ah, hello there ->

To the esteemed reader, My name is William James Moriarty. Primarily, I am a Mathematician and a professor at Durham University. It is with sincere regard for the curious mind that I set pen to paper and welcome you to this modest yet earnest chronicle. The world, as we are so often reminded, is an intricate mechanism; its gears driven by intellect, compassion, and the quiet resolve of those who dare to question what is merely accepted. Too frequently, we resign ourselves to the notion that society is immovable, that injustice is an inheritance to be borne rather than examined. I, however, hold a rather different conviction. Within these pages, I hope to explore ideas with clarity and purpose: to examine the structures that govern our lives, to illuminate the virtues of reason and empathy, and to consider how progress, true progress, may be cultivated through thoughtful action rather than reckless passion. Knowledge, when guided by benevolence, is not a weapon, but a lantern. Did you know? if you put winger sorry vinegar in slightly hot milk and let it sit, then take the milk solids out and then boiling the whey water, putting the milk solids back and stretching it in the hot water and after u are done just wash it under normal clean water and put it in the refrigerator, and take it then eat it, you get mozzarella cheese....

What made you choose to become a math professor at Durham? As far as I’m concerned you’re rather talented in all fields.

That is very kind of you to say.

I suppose I’ve always been a bit of a polymath at heart, but mathematics is my first love. There is a specific harmony in numbers that you simply don't find in the chaos of biology or the subjectivity of the arts.

As for Durham... well, London can be a bit 'loud,' don't you think?

A most enlightening afternoon was spent within the halls of a local museum in Durham, accompanied by my dear brother, Louis.

Each relic is a testament to a world that once believed itself eternal. And yet, here they stand, removed from their origins, studied by strangers. Louis observed that memory, when taken out of context, becomes something altogether different. A fascinating thought, and one I find myself most inclined to agree with.

i had my math test today and i panicked a few days before because the practice questions were so difficult for no reason and i genuinely thought i was gonna fail but the actual test was easy so i pancked for nothing.

May I ask what your favorite area of mathematics is? I personally love abstract algebra to no end. Cheers!

My, what a delightful question.

It is always a pleasure to encounter someone with a fondness for abstract algebra. The way it distills structure into its purest form is, I think, quite beautiful.

As for myself, I have long been particularly fond of number theory. There is a certain quiet majesty in the study of primes and their hidden patterns. The purity of it appeals to me greatly.

Umm so u have attended University and have definitely passed with flying colours. Did you ever feel overwhelmed with expectations of ur teacher?

Currently, not to brag, I have been getting some amazing marks for a whole year and my teachers are pushing me to do smth i don't want too. I have told them and they are respectful but the pressure is there uk. And the path is not even in my back up path.

I feel like I am deceiving my teachers, my family and friends. Like my classmates are working twice as hard and yet I am scoring more than them. I just study the night before and get more. I feel guilty for some reason.

Purely, it depends on the matter of advice. If they are asking you to divert your attention to a new study, a distraction perhaps; then you should not listen to another word that is said. You are the only one to know yourself, doubt and the wrong expectations will only tarnish that.

On the other hand, if they are asking you to reconsider your methods of study; or perhaps merely want to instill skills for further endeavours... I fear it may be necessary to give it a chance. As a teacher myself, we do not wish to intimidate you, but rather illuminate paths you may not of originally considered.

Either way, do not let guilt cloud your judgement. As Bishop Robert South said,

"Guilt upon the conscience, like rust upon iron, both defiles and consumes it."

How amusing today proved to be.

During my mathematics lecture, I was graced with the unexpected presence of Mr. Sherlock Holmes. One might assume he had taken a sudden interest in higher mathematics; though I suspect the true variable under examination was not on the chalkboard.

I have a question for you.

My dear close friend has been in and out of the hospital as of late. Physically, they have been doing well, but their caretakers believe that their mental state has been declining. I have been unable to contact this friend for quite some time now due to the caretakers' belief. Having spoken to other mutual friends of ours, I have confirmed that they are completely isolated due to their caretakers. Obviously, this is a major factor contributing to their declining mental state.

Unfortunately, I am no longer able to contact their caretakers or my friend. This is deeply concerning to me; I am unable to help my friend currently. I would very much like to visit them personally and remove them from the situation but I am unable to do so as I still have to account for their fragile physical health.

What should I do in this situation? I trust you have great insight into the matter.

I am terribly sorry to hear that your friend is suffering.

Illness is such a frightening ordeal, even when one is not the patient oneself… for it lends a certain gravitas to one’s condition.

My brother Louis was often ill when we were younger. It was… a trying time for us all. For that reason, I sympathise with you greatly. It is no easy thing to watch someone you love endure hardship, particularly when you are denied even the permission to visit them.

For advise... You mention that your friend’s body appears to be recovering, yet their mind seems to suffer in equal measure. That is hardly surprising. Prolonged isolation, even when imposed with good intentions, can weigh heavily upon the spirit.

However, before you act, you must ask yourself a crucial question:

Are the caretakers malicious, or merely misguided?

The distinction determines everything.

For now, I would advise you to step back from the situation, but ensure your support remains constant should circumstances change.

There is no merit in heroic acts that bring about greater harm than good. Rash intervention may jeopardise your friend’s fragile health or sever what few avenues of contact remain. Unfortunately, at present, there may be little you can actively do beyond maintaining vigilance and composure.

Patience, though often mistaken for passivity, is sometimes the most deliberate course of action.
