Why Do We Resent Athletes?
On Mike & Mike this morning, Greenberg asked the question, "Why do we resent pro athletes for all the money they make but not other celebrities? Why do people hate LeBron James and not Tom Cruise?" Greeny and Jemele Hill brought up the fact that we all think we can be pro athletes and everyone plays sports but not everyone joins the theater club or things like that. I think the biggest reason why we resent pro athletes so much is money is all that's talked about now. This guy is making $30 million, another guy wants $20 million a year, and a newly drafted guy out of college is holding out for max money. It's all about the money. We hear how much money a particular movie makes but it takes more to find out how much an actor makes for starring in a movie or how much an actress makes per episode on a popular tv show. It's not shoved down our throats like it while watching SportsCenter or surfacing SBNation. Why do you think Deadspin is so popular?
April Fools' Day
Wouldn't it have been amazing if all the weather-people in Chicago got together and decided to pull an April Fools Day prank by forecasting cold weather today but it really was going to be 70 degrees? The reality is it is hilariously cold for April 1st.
Blackhawks Pick’em
Sorry about the Blackhawks losing their first game of the season on Friday evening.
For the past two or three seasons, PJ, Rob, Dad and I have selected a Blackhawks player who we thought was going to score that game. Before every game, or sometimes in the first period, we’d group text one another with the superstars like Toews, Kane and Hossa. Other times one of us would pick the lesser-known like Stalberg, Shaw and Leddy.
We used to keep score for each point but now it’s just for fun. Sometimes, when a player is on a hot streak, we decide they’re off-limits.
However, on Friday night, we all forget to make our selections. And the Blackhawks NHL-record points streak came to an end.
As I write this, the ‘Hawks are competing against the Edmonton. The Oilers quickly scored four goals in the first period and it looked like the Blackhawks were going to start a different kind of streak.
We forgot to pick players again.
I thought the game was already out of hand but Rob and Dad decided to pick some players anyway.
As soon as we picked, the ‘Hawks scored two goals, made it a game at 6-5 and had a strong chance to tie the game and earn a point.
We won’t forget to pick players again this season. Our apologies and One Goal.
Yesterday, I jokingly said I wanted a giant Oreo cake for my 1-year anniversary. Not an Oreo ice cream cake, not an Oreo frosted cake. A legit, giant Oreo cake. Today, my wish came true. Thank you @Deniseynz! (at Resolution Media)

Welcome Back
I cancelled my Squarespace account and came back to tumblr. It's easy to create posts, the mobile apps are better and it's free. The Squarespace theme I had was much better than this though, and a new one doesn't cost $49 like on here.
This kid rocks.
I WANT IT.
#MiamiOH
"Where did you go to school?"
"I went to Miami University."
"Oh, down in Florida?"
"No, I went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio."
"Oh, yeah, Miami of Ohio. That's a great school."
"Yes it is."
I've had that conversation more times than I can remember and it never gets an easier. Most people have heard of Miami and know it's reputation, but they know Miami of Ohio, not necessarily Miami University. It's my biggest pet peeve when people refer to my alma mater as Miami of Ohio, but not by the people that didn't attend the university. It really bothers me when people who currently attend Miami, are alumni of Miami or are employed at Miami refer to it as Miami of Ohio. It's Miami University, get it right.
The problem is, Miami is in a bit of an identity crisis. Is it Miami University of Miami of Ohio? The school wants to continue to get its name out there and be recognized as one of the best public schools in the nation, but doesn't want to be confused with that school down in Florida. ESPN is never going to get it right, as Miami of Ohio is engrained in sports reporting and that isn't going to change (except for college hockey, the score overlay usually says "Miami U"). I've always felt the school administrators, alumni association and true Miamians fought to be recognized as Miami University. So when the university quietly announced that all email addresses and domains would switch to MiamiOH.edu in a letter from President Hodge, it feels like they're giving up.
It also feels like they're not telling us the reason behind the sudden switch.
I've always stood by Miami University, but I can't with switching everything to MiamiOH. miamioh.edu/ucm/resources/…
— Will Longhini (@wlonghini) August 1, 2012
Since I am such a huge advocate of the Miami University identity, I of course was outraged. And when I am outraged by the actions of Miami, I usually take to Twitter. I've always used the hashtag #MiamiU to label tweets and index them for others to view when they search on Twitter. With the new branding and domain switch, the "official" hashtag was switched to #MiamiOH as well. I thought this was a dumb idea as well and vowed to never use it. I still don't think I've used it.
Until today.
I've realized I've become the same type of person I despise. I complain about the actions of Miami University and entrench myself in its old ways. It's the same way a lot of Miami alumni before the early 90s still consider themselves Redskins and complain about the change to RedHawks or complain that we're wasting all our money on the awesome new Armstrong Student Center.
We complain when Miami does something we don't like and we voice our frustrations to our friends or our social followers. Yet, we don't take any steps in letting our voices be heard before Miami does something we don't like. All of us crawl out of our holes after the fact. Why can't we, as a collective Miami community, start voicing our opinions to the people that can help us make a difference? Let's stop posting blog articles and tweets after it is too late. Let's be proactive.
Have you contacted your class agent? Do you know who your class agent is? When's the last time you participated in a local chapter event or meeting? Have you reached out to your school's dean or the folks in the Alumni Association? There are ways to let our voices be heard, but they need to be heard before we are angry. When we're angry, our voices are physically heard but they're not understood.
But it's not only when we want to voice our opinions on the bad things; let's let the world know about the good things! It's always fun to see the whole Miami community on Facebook and Twitter share the same Forbes article with "Love and honor" attached to it. We're proud of our school! And when we're proud or excited, those are times when we can let the administrators, faculty and staff know too. Contact Dean Jenkins or Ray Mock and let them know you're proud to be a Miamian. If you're a Young Alum, follow us on Facebook and let us know how you want to stay connected to your university.
So let's rally behind Miami University and try and understand why we're making the switch. I also call on the administrators of Miami University to give a better and more open explanation on the new branding initiative. We're in this together.
Let's be the Miami family all of us always talk about.
The only thing I'd like to see changed is the dumb kids at RedHawks sporting events chanting, "Let's go 'Skins." You're not funny. I don't care if you had relatives that went to Miami when the mascot was the Redskins, you are a RedHawk so start acting like one.
Old Miami, new Miami; days of old and days to be. Weave the story of thy glory; our Miami, here's to thee.
Force YouTube on iPhone to Open Up in Safari & Remove The App
The stock YouTube app on iOS sucks and Apple doesn't let you remove stock apps like Stocks and Compass, or even let you put Newsstand in a folder without a trick. However, Lifehacker posted an ingenious workaround to remove the YouTube app and force Safari and other applications to open YouTube videos on the superior mobile site.
Tap Settings > General > Restrictions. Flip the YouTube slider to off. Now the YouTube icon will disappear and any time you want to load up a video it will will stay in your browser, no app required.
While you're at it, you might want to flip the Ping slider to off too.

The only worthwhile aspect of Google+ is the Hangouts feature. There are plenty of other options for videochatting, but none of the other popular service allows multiple users at a time; FaceTime is one-to-one and so is Skype (unless you upgrade).
Hangouts is one of the best ways all of my Miami University friends and I can stay in contact with one another and have everyone in the same "place" all at once. I was even able to join the Hangout from my Google+ iOS app while driving home from dinner. It was like a scene out of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
Google should just scrap all its effort into G+ as a whole and just focus on Hangouts.
Kids:
A few hours ago, I landed in Los Angeles, turned on my phone, and confirmed what you already know. Sony Pictures Television is replacing me as showrunner on Community, with two seasoned fellows that I’m sure are quite nice - actually, I have it on good authority they’re quite nice, because...
Find My iPhone
Too many times I've had my friends complain about losing or not being able to find their iPhones. Most of the time it the morning after a night out and they've either left their phone at a bar, at someone else's apartment or, in the worst scenario, stolen.
Did you know that your iPhone (and iPad and Mac) have a feature built in to the operating system and all you have to do is switch it on. Yes, you're all idiots if you don't turn it on.
1. If you've recently bought an iPhone or upgraded to iOS 5, I'm sure you're aware of iCloud. Please turn on iCloud and use some of the features and settings included with it. Here's a quick guide on how to set up iCloud. Sign in with your Apple ID, the same one you use to purchase music and apps on iTunes and the App Store.
If you're not sure if you turned on iCloud when you first set up your phone, tap the Settings icon on the Home screen and select iCloud.
2. At the bottom of the iCloud settings, toggle on Find My iPhone. That's it, you're all set.
If you ever are in a situation where you can't find your iPhone, even in your own home, or you fear that someone stole it, it's easy to track it.
To track your iPhone, go to iCloud.com. Sign in again with the same Apple ID that you signed in with on your phone in the iCloud settings.
Click on Find My iPhone and you'll see a map with all your Apple devices with iCloud listed on the left-hand side.
Once you select your iPhone (or any device), you're able to choose from a few options:
Play a sound or message will play a loud sonar-type noise from your iPhone so that you can find it in your couch or at a bar. You can also type in a personalized message, letting anyone who found your phone that you're on your way to pick it up or to call you at another number to arrange pickup.
If you fear that someone may have your iPhone and you don't want them to have access to your phone, look at your texts, etc., you can lock your phone remotely. And if you're fairly certain that someone stole your phone, you can remotely wipe it and all of your settings, files and apps will be erased and the phone will be restored to factory settings. Only use the remote wipe option as a last option (it's OK if you find it later, you have a backup of your iPhone on iCloud or your computer.)
What about if my phone battery has completely run out or it's not on? Your device will send you an email as soon as it makes an Internet connection. In the message you'll be able to click a link to take you to a map of where your device was last located.
Find My iPhone is an invaluable and easy way to locate your phone if you ever lose it or it is stolen. Make sure you're using it, and iCloud, now. If you have any questions, let me know. Go set it up.

My Favorite Super Bowl Commercials
"Well that was over the top."
The Super Bowl ads this year weren't all that great, especially from the big players. There was a lot of disappointment from Volkswagen with their followup to last year's "The Force" commercial, "The Dog Strikes Back." What would have put it over the top was if Darth Vader at the end was the same kid as last year force choking the cantina patron.
Last year VW ran "The Force." This year it's just "Forced."
— stephen lundberg (@stephenlundberg) February 6, 2012
The other huge disappointments were Honda's "Matthew's Day Off" and E*TRADE's "Fatherhood" ads. Anheuser Busch's usually stellar clydesdale and prohibition ads were forgettable but the simple Bud Light Platinum spots seemed to work, or confirm a lot of people's weekend purchases, especially on Twitter.

I did laugh at the M&M "Just My Shell" ad even though it had LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It" in it. I also enjoyed Toyota's "It's Reinvented" spot. Who doesn't want a time machine baby?
With that being said, here are the three commercials I thought were the best. Surprisingly, two of them are from technology companies that I'm really not fond of. The other one really wants me to start buying American.
Best Buy - "Phone Innovators"
It was great seeing the creators of some of the things I use on my phone everyday, like the text message and Instagram. The ending with the creators of Words With Friends, poking fun at the Alec Baldwin situation, was very clever.
Awesome idea. Associate your cutting edge brand with Best Buy.Might as well chug a Bud Platinum while you're at it.

Chrysler - "It's Halftime in America"
Let's rally people. "Yeah, it's halftime America, and our second half's about to begin."
Goddamn that makes me want to buy a Dodge.
— apocryphal mat honan (@mat) February 6, 2012
Samsung - "Thing Called Love"
I'm not supposed to like this ad because I'm an Apple fan. Samsung has been poking fun of Apple fanboys waiting in line for Cupertino's latest product for awhile now but this ad was great because of one thing: The Darkness.
The Darkness… a PDA with a stylus… Samsung is going to be huge in 2003.

I think I enjoyed "The Voice" last night better than any part of the Super Bowl. I hope Jesse Campbell, from Chicago, wins. I've never heard a better voice.
[Bonus]: Acura's "Transactions" ad with Seinfeld was OK because they brought in the Soup Nazi.

I Lied, This Was The Best Super Bowl Commercial
This only aired in Nebraska and was cut-off by a local news promo which makes it even more awesome.
Even Old Milwaukee links to the tv-recorded clip, not even an official video!
