Tories vote to block compulsory LGBT-inclusive sex education-
So basically in the UK there was a proposal made to improve sex education by a group of female MPs concerned about the variability of the sex and relationships education you could receive, and the high rates of sexual harassment in schools. Making a sex and relationships (SRE) set syllabus would ensure that all students would have access to the same information. My current understanding is that faith schools do not have to teach anything that may go against their faith (so a Catholic school may not mention the different contraceptive methods) and parents can choose to have their child removed from the class. The suggestion was to make “sex and relationships education, same-sex relationships, sexual consent, sexual violence, and domestic violence” which is an expansion of the lessons already taught.
This was blocked.
Whilst PM Theresa May does promise there will be a reform, it seems that this is the main issue the conservatives (who all voted against) had: “the new clause needs to include a clear statement that we are talking not about promotion, but about education”. This sounds like an echo of Margaret Thatcher’s Section 28 which prevented the promotion of homosexuality by any local authority. This made it almost impossible for teachers and schools to discuss it at all or address issues of bullying and safe sex fearing a backlash from the public (able to assume homophobia was allowed by the government now) and losing their funding from the state. She said at a party conference that “Children who need to be taught to respect traditional moral values are being taught that they have an inalienable right to be gay. All of those children are being cheated of a sound start in life—yes, cheated.”
I do have a right to be gay. We are all born free, and I was born as a bisexual person- and that does not make me inferior. It should be taught in schools that lgbta+ people have the right to be who they are. Stating that there is no right to be gay implies that it is a choice which it fundamentally is not.
Why can’t being gay be taught at a positive thing? I have only ever, at best, seen “Gay is okay”. Being gay has brought great happiness to me throughout my life, just as love does to any straight person. It’s not just living in your situation with the people around you and how accepted you are that you have to contend with nowadays. We are globally connected, instantly. For example the Orlando Shooting had it’s effect even if you were thousands of miles away. It is too easy to get a bleak picture of life as an lgbta+ person and I’m not surprised that “44% of young (16-24 year old) LGBT people have considered suicide”. What young lgbta+ people need, is hope. It’s being taught that you are more than just “okay” and at best tolerated, but actually good. How to minimise risk in your life of unsafe sex and how to properly understand consent. It means access to resources such as the It Gets Better project. This cannot be done when you are unable to show being gay or trans in a positive light.

Love is orange: A frill of Clementine peel Falling to the ground. My thumb orbits a freckle. Words become keepsakes In the setting amber air. The dawn rushes from her fingertips; Her eyelashes bloom In the light. The room- transforming Into a silk cocoon. I’m panning for gold in Her bright brown eyes. Who calls love red?
Love is lilac: Ashy clouds sketching outlines For tomorrow’s early skies. The bleeding blue Traces a line of kisses Along the edge of the sunset As mist reflects on water. Lipstick stained letters, Violets in a vase, Fingernails to trace in the morning And a handmade lavender bag Under the pillow.
