i swear iāve actually still been painting even if iāve left this blog silent for a while!
just finished the last of this set of whelps.Ā
i did them as speedpaint-plus: I speedpainted each of them (45 min) & then came back & did touch up & details etc. (10 min to 1 hr)
they need based & dropped off before Christmas.Ā
Cyriss: Helping w Optifex Directive 1
@goldstepstuff got a bunch of Cyriss in swap for most of our (mostly his) Trollblood army and asked if iād be interested in painting some of them.Ā
While the OD are far from done, here is a taste of what iād had in mind. i have some freehanding to do and need to clean up a few areas, but i like the general idea of it.
Speedpainting practice: Troll Whelp (Footie? Bootie? idk)
Needed the catharsis of another speedpaint session tonight, but as the husband is off gaming & I was too tired to join I had to take care of business myself.
set up space as usual
set up timer
apparently these are the only fully primed models of the growing pile of speedpaint-able models (i smell someone just wanting his whelps done...)
roll for initiative (with my Rainbow Brush die, of course)
then search madly for a base instead of painting bc I didnāt realize beforehand that there wasnāt a pile of small bases next to them on the shelf (where??!)
click start.
paint, paint, paint.
Time! - but i wasnāt quite done
so afterward i spent a few minutes putting on the bits i had forgotten.
clearly i need to put on techno & paint faster - or at least have better time management. but at least haing proper light & magnifiers this go-āround means that Iām quite a bit more satisfied with my results.
(not as satisfied with MSP HD Solid Black, though, btw. super watery)
Speedpainting Practice: Troll Whelp (Handy)
The first of our home speedpainting sessions went pretty well - i set out my brushes and a selection of paints etc, everything you need for a quick paint-up. Then goldstepstuff handed me a model out of the pile, setting a timer as he did so.
35 minutes later I had a (mostly) *table-worthy whelp (the 4-pic). I did end up taking another 20 min afterward to clean āem up a little (the2-pic), but itās not bad for a poorly-lit, no-special-glasses painting session.
The pile of practice models grows, but i was so much less stressed after a little time with paint on my hands iām not worried about having the motivation to keep going. It is self-perpetuating.
*weāll base later when the whole gaggle is done
Between free minis from vendors, speedpainting winnings, and models we already had on hand, i think i have a few to practice on for a while.
My plan is to speedpaint all but the dragon (heās just too big & i want to play with the wings a bit) and then start on my giant Cthulhu. Husband has offered to be the one to pick a model for me when i sit down to paint so I canāt pre-plan too much, which can be a problem for me.
A couple of these still need a little work (e.g., dude in the backās flag is all smurshed down) & the dragon needs a lot of work, but I should be able to go ahead and prime most of them this week and then do a speedpaint every 3-4 weeks as time allows.
GenCon2015: Minis Painting
Last year at GenCon i did a round of speedpainting on a whim, but over the course of the year started to really think of it as a way to improve both the speed and the quality of my painting. So I signed up for a bunch more this year.
Donāt worry, i managed to keep the brushes out of the espresso and the paintwater out of my mouth. This time.
Of the several that I did I managed to get first place in one of the Reaper rounds with this little dude. Iām p happy w how the face turned out. That got me a space in their finals on Sunday where I got third with the elf below.
I may try to get some better pics later, but iāll probably end up dipping the back three to repaint. I actually got third with the tentacle-thing in the back but it was a 1st & 2nd only thing for those & my eyeballs were smeary.
Among my winnings for the Reaper finals was this really cool set of brushes from Games & Gears. It includes this silicone-tipped jobbie that Iām looking forward to trying out.
Finally, this was my last-minute entry into the painting competition, mostly just to support the Rainbow Brush competition (in support of LGBT+ youth, required to use all the colors of the Pride flag). There are parts of it that iām happy with but overall there are some major problems & I knew going in he wouldnāt win. So, for now heās going back into his box, at least until i sell some stuff and open up some shelf space.
...unless someone out there wants to buy it. Just drop me a note.
Are you going to GenCon this year?
And do you have a moment to say hello?
Me: *spends hours meticulously removing mold lines
Primer: Hey! Look at all these mold lines! They're everywhere!
Will Paint for Tea turned 2 today!
100 posts!
also, apparently this happened...
Vertical hang test on the new minis carrier for goldstepstuffās Cyriss.
When the glue has cured it should be able to withstand an accidental topple upside down as well, all without the frustration of foam slowly wearing the paint off and knocking off arms/ legs/ spears etc. from the force of putting them in & taking them out time after time.
The one i made for most of the small base models fits 48 in the same space that the foam for approximately half that will carry (i.e., replaces space of one foam tray).
Iāve also made a couple for individual models that arenāt easy to safely transport otherwise, but they donāt fit nicely in the army bags like these do, since these were made specifically to take the place of (some of) the foam trays.
Narrowing down the colors I use by how they play with one another. Also taking a good look at how they look under different lights.
Ever painted Holt? The dude has over 40 buttons on his coat. I picked them all out individually. Every single damn one. The dude has subtle, yet potent, bling. What about Lylyth? Itās like she saw the Harbinger one day and thought āDamn, I need to have even more material dragging on the ground behind ā¦

Review: TGJ Hobbies- Mini Rack and Basic Rack By: Lyn Stahl, Metalhead Minis Company: TJG Hobbies Material: ¼" Ply Maple Wood Mini Rack Price: $25 Basic Rack Price: $45 Website: www.tgjhobbies.com Be sure to check them out on Kickstarter!
I had the pleasure of meeting the trio who created TGJ Hobbies at ReaperCon 2015. The same place where they launched their Kickstarter. Tim Martin and Gabe Martinez were friends since junior high. Years ago, they got back into the hobby of gaming, including table top wargaming. In 2010, Tim was working on the idea of a modular solution for hobby paints and tools. Tim, Gabe, and another close friend Jonathan Blair, came together and started designing prototypes with the goal of having a product that will set them apart. By October 2014, TGJ Hobbies became an official business.
The hobby racks are made from ¼" ply maple wood. The reason for this choice of material and thickness? Durability. Compared to the Material MDF (particle board, plywood) which most other hobby racks are made from, maple wood is much stronger and is much more likely to withstand accidents and damage. This would mean that a rack like this could be better suited for hobbyists with children and pets (like myself). Or hobbyists in general who are rough on their hobby tools and/or furniture. Even my large and rambunctious orange tabby cat was no match for one of my basic hobby racks. He recently made one fly off the table while I was reorganizing the studio, no damage to the rack at all. I have also watched the drop tests in person that were done by Tim. He would drop mini racks from the top of his 6 foot, 4 inch frame, and no damage would occur to the rack. Even when he dropped it on its corners. It was funny to him watching the rest of us cringe in fear of seeing a rack shatter into pieces. Has not happened yet from what I have seen. At this time, the hobby racks do not come with instructions. They are very easy to assemble. However, while putting together my mini rack at Reapercon, it did cause a moment of frustration when it came time to make sure both sides came together and stayed. Once a little āhand hammeringā was used, the parts did hold together. In the process, I did chip a corner to one of the side panels. It ended up having no effect on completing the assembly process nor the durability of the rack. Once I got back to the studio, we used some gorilla glue to permanently put the panels together. I did discuss with Tim about the panels not totally holding together without some effort. He said that it is something that they are already working on.
Mini Rack -$25 The mini rack is totally ideal for the beginner hobbyist or perhaps a hobbyist with very limited space. It is about 8-10 inches wide and 12 inches deep, holds 18 eyedropper paint bottles, one water cup holder, and has holes for brushes to stand in. Also small enough for travel.
Basic Rack- $45 Can also be used in some limited space situations. The size is 16 inches wide and 12 inches deep. The basic rack holds 36 eyedropper paints, 2 water cup holders, and holes for multiple brushes to stand in. Can also be used in travel.
**NOTE: Examples of eyedropper bottle paints- Reaper Master Series, Vallejo, Army Painter, Scale 75, and Game Color. Shelves can also be cut to fit Privateer Pressā P3 line and Games Workshop/Citadel paints.
Aside from the maple wood that is used for the racks, customers do have the option of ordering their racks to be made from other woods as well. These wood options include Rosewood, Mahogany, Ebony, And more. What I personally like about the maple wood is that it gives you the option to customize the color. You can easily stain it or paint it whatever color you want. TGJ Hobbies can replace their logo on the racks with your logo or even your name. During ReaperCon, TGJ made awesome limited edition basic racks with the Reaper Miniatures logo on them. They made 10 and they all sold quickly. As long as there is room and it is feasible, they can do it. They can also customize the shelves to fit a mixture of products as long as they are given the dimensions. One of the things that some people say about this product is that they are pricy. Do keep in mind, that this is one of those items where āyou get what you pay forā. If you want real cheap and donāt care about quality, then this truthfully might not be the item for you. However, if you want quality, long lasting, and able to take a beating, this might be a product worth looking into.
While deciding on what painting classes/ events to participate in at GenCon this year I found this on Marike Reimerās page (destroyerminis.com).
Sheās even set something up with WAMP so you can participate even if you canāt be at GenCon this year.
GenCon is coming...
a little over an hour till i can request my event tickets. Itās an exciting day!
(I should be painting! I havenāt even started my GenCon model yet. lol)
