Fen let out a sigh .It was the first real warm day of the year. Though it was technically still winter, the cold had seemed to have retreated in the wake of the lengthening days. The buds on the maples and oaks looked as if they would break open at any time. The browns and greys of dead leaves were broken up by flowers and ferns that had dared to stick their heads out in the hope that the threat of frost had passed. Here and there a dirty pile of snow remained, shedding water that would inevitably flow down to the lake. Though he knew it was many hundreds of miles away, Fen couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity with this woodland.

The thought of an easy ride down renewed the group’s spirits, and they redoubled their efforts. Even so, it wasn’t until after dark that they made it to the ferry landing at Watch-the-Bridge. With the next boat not arriving until morning, there was little they could do but wait inside the lodge.

Just after dawn came the ringing of a bell. The group rushed outside and were amazed to see the ferryboat. It was a wide craft, covered almost completely by an enclosed cabin. On top at either end were a pair of matching deckhouses. As it slowly glided towards the dock, Fen couldn’t help but wonder how it did so. From the outside there was almost no indication how the vessel was propelled without the use of oars or poles. In fact, midship was a pair of treadwheel paddles which the crew operated.

“This one” Playa pulled out the first letter, “Is to be taken back to Fernstan.”

“I’ll do it.” Aster volunteered.

“Good. This one I entrust to the rest of you.” Playa then handed out the second letter. “It’s for my brother in Pinecrown Tor. Hopefully he understands the plan.

“Remember, the rest of you will be on your own.” Playa dropped her voice till it was just above a whisper. “I don’t know how long Fen and I will be gone. Hopefully not too long, but no matter what, don’t let anyone find out what we’re really doing. The success of this mission counts on it remaining secret.”

“We understand.” Aster quickly responded.

1. What was your favorite book?

There were a few standbys such as The Phantom Tollbooth, The Hobbit, LOTR

2. What is your current favorite book?

See above, plus A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

3. What genre is your favorite, reading or writing?

Fantasy, science fiction, gothic.

4. Favorite trope?

Haven’t thought too much about specific tropes. That being said, I do like a good found family, fate, defying fate, journey of discovery+ there is something worth fighting for

5. If you could, what Worldbuilding or story would you love to have written yourself?

It would have to be the world of Tolkien. There’s just so much that went into Arda: peoples, places, mythology, language (guess I’m a bit of a sucker for these sort of things).

6. Your favorite line (or three) that you have written?

“What matters is not how long someone lives, but the quality of the life they lived.”

7. Favorite medium to experience a story (book, IF, video game, movie, etc)?

I don’t think there is one ‘ideal’ medium, and different formats fit different stories.

8. Favorite character verses favorite character to write: who would win?

Oooooo…I have quite a few ‘favorite’ characters. Dunc, The Doctor, Samwise Gamgee…I could go on . Favorite one to write would be Fen. I think they would team up and the joke would be on me.

9. What story inspires you to keep writing?

The Lord of the Rings. The specific moment that inspires me is Sam’s speech from the film version of The Two Towers

10. Random fun fact about you, your writing, your interests!

Let’s see…there are a few things I do outside of writing and drawing. I can sew relatively well, and I’ve done a few pieces for Halloween and my Ren Faire outfit

A shadow crossed Playa’s face.

“In times of uncertainty, some look for a rallying point, a harkening back to what they see as better days. They wish to bury it while away the bad parts and only see the good. Others…their hearts are black with rot. Hate twists them, and their world shrinks until it comprises only two halves. On one side are those they see as ‘good’ and ‘righteous’; those who believe the same things that they do. Everyone who does not conform are looked upon with suspicion and distrust, or worse, are perceived as enemies who must be destroyed.”
