Been meaning to do a breakdown of this tool for a while :). I hope that helps! This tool is an integral part of my workflow and coloring would take a lot longer for me without it.

Tips:

If you have enough RAM (4GB or more should be enough), increase your History States to around 100 in Edit > Preferences > Performance… This will give you more history states to choose from in the panel.

For tablet styluses with erasers, flip the stylus over and hold down Alt (or Option on the Mac) and the eraser now performs the same function as the History Brush.

History Snapshots (the camera button in the panel) can save history states for as long as you have the document open, so you can go back and paint from important states without losing them to the history state limit.

Other uses for the History Brush:

Line art. When working on line art, you can freely draw lines over others on the same layer for more contiguous-looking curves and lines, and then brush them back out without affecting the lines before the active state.

Advantages of History Brush over Multi-layer method:

Less potential for a cluttered Layers panel.

Less time clicking around in the Layers panel, more time spent drawing. Great for speed-painting.

Each history state represents a snapshot in time of every layer in your document. Perform the same functions across multiple layers without hassle.

Ease of picking from history states rather than needing to remember to duplicate or set up layers before it’s too late.

Paint something on with a Brush blending mode (Overlay, Color Dodge, etc), paint it back out with the History Brush, instantly.

Just paint, don’t even worry about it. If there’s something you remember you want to paint back to, it’s most likely still there. Find it in the History panel and activate it.

Here is my first watercolor process video. It’s far from perfect (sorry for my big head poping and all the skecthbook moves) but it can give a glimpse of how I proceed regarding watercolor, and hopefully help some of you. At the very begining of the process I took a picture of the drawing that I put aside, because as I begin to paint, it tend to completely cover the drawing and it’s sometimes very hard to figure out where the lines were at first. Tuesday Tips - Floating Hands I use this a lot when storyboarding a first pass of a sequence. Placing hands in the right, most appealing position can be tricky. In order to create a clear silhouette for the hands, I often draw them “floating in the air”. Then, using my general knowledge of anatomy, I just “fill in the arms”. This way I can create a much more expressive and clear pose than if I was just radiating out of the torso. That’s when structure and anatomy can get in the way of a clear message. And hands carry a lot of meaning, so I want to make them as clear as possible  for my audience to see them. I would say the same applies to life drawing. Since they often don’t carry the body weight (legs most often do), I feel like i can take the freedom of changing their position slightly to make a better visual statement. -n
