Here is my submission for the September #winchesterbrosficchallenge. My partner, stellakissed and I, decided to write our own stories. So here goes!
Summary: The Winchesters catch wind of a case involving a mysterious death and, of all things, a disembodied hoodie. Trigger warnings for death, mentions of child abuse, and fire. Rated PG-13 for the aforementioned triggers and mild language.
It’s funny; the tricks your mind can play on you in the dark.
Melanie lowered her book. What was that sound? Despite the fact that she was in her favorite reading spot, on her back porch, she couldn’t help but indulge in the occasional feeling of unease. She chuckled to herself, feeling somewhat amused and a little silly. Yes, it was pretty dark beyond the glow of the porch light, but she had enjoyed her reading spot for as far back as she could remember. Even though she lived in the suburbs, she had to remind herself that there was wildlife out there; the occasional raccoon, or opossum…perhaps even a stray cat; she’d even seen them on occasion, lumbering across her small, fenced in backyard. But still…
That didn’t stop her heart from skipping a beat when she heard the odd rustle of leaves, or the snapping of a twig, like she had just a moment ago.
She paused, waiting for the noise to repeat itself, and when she heard nothing but the crickets merrily chirping away, she resumed her spot on the page. She continued for a little while, slowly melting back into the story which she had previously been so immersed. And then–
There it was again. A rustle- or perhaps a shuffle? Her heart thudded and she lowered the book again. What the hell? She set the book down and stood to get a better view over the porch railing. She could see nothing but the yard fading into the shadows toward her fence. Another rustle greeted her from the dark, and prickles of unease rippled down her neck. She took one tentative step back, and stood, frozen, listening.
Several moments passed without incident, so she slowly lowered herself back to her seat, cursing herself for being so jumpy. She picked up her book again, and attempted to resume where she left off, but she was having difficulty settling back in to the story. Something just felt…wrong. As if there was something back in those shadows, watching her.
To hell with this, she thought, and stood to go inside. She turned to put her hand on the doorknob, and that is when she heard the moan. A deep, sobbing moan that made the hairs on her head stand on end. Adrenaline flooded her body with a jolt of panic, and she whirled around. There was nothing there. Was her mind playing tricks on her? Had she heard a neighbor, or perhaps a TV? No, that couldn’t be. She stood staring into the darkness, seeing nothing, and then she heard it again. The moan.
It sounded closer now, so without waiting for anything else to happen, Melanie spun on her heels, flung open the door, and ran inside. She slammed the door behind her and bolted the lock. She stood, panting, and stared out the window, waiting for a figure to materialize from the shadows, but none appeared.
When she felt the hand clamp down on the back of her neck, she could only let out a small, terrified shriek before her world went dark.
