“gemini” - one of a slowly growing set of zodiac-themed designs
"we'll drown like this" - a little design themed around the idea that the same old structures and beliefs engrained in capitalistic western society, we'll literally all fucking die
when i was into vaporwave in high school in like 2014, i was too young to personally remember the 80s/90s things that a lot of vaporwave-focused visual artists were reviving. i was raised in a world that was recently the 90s though, so a lot of the visual iconography felt old to me, but in the sense that it was somehow always there. as a very young child in the 2000s, i didnt understand where computers or infrastructure or the weather channel came from. i didnt understand that someone made fonts, user interfaces, or slightly dated architecture that stood since before i was born or sentient. as far as i was concerned, certain things were just Always There. that is what vaporwave represented to me as a teen. not nostalgia for the 80s or 90s, but the uncanny memory of being a toddler that believed in some kind of cold, unthinking computerized god that erected statues and escalators, carved out hallways, and lived in the machine that stared back at me when i fucked around in powerpoint or whatever as a child.
as a result of all of that, i was fascinated by the feel of vaporwave, seapunk, old web art, and netcore type shit. especially art using old windows UIs and fonts, music that sounded like the midi files that were auto-loaded on windows computers but if they were sapped of their energy, and surreal mallscapes that had no humans as far as the eye can see. even if i knew who made and posted the art and music, it felt like it came from no one. it felt like it spawned itself into the world like a minecraft ruin. when i make vaporwave-themed art, i want to create something that feels empty and detached like that. i want to create something that comes from nowhere and doesn't care about me.
in the spirit of that, i have a new aesthetic and graphic design blog over at @webhaunts that id love for you all to check out. presenting: vaporwave 2! now without uncritical reagancore nostalgia and asian fetishism
