In my native country we use French cards almost every day, so I obviously grew up attached to my playing deck and never felt the urge to buy proper tarots - even my current Major Arcana deck is homemade - but don’t get me wrong, I l♥ve tarots - especially those like Shadowscapes, Rider, Art Nouveau and Luminous Spirit! Readings with playing cards are a bit informal, yet accurate and difficoult to interpret because of upright and reversed cards looking the same. It’s like a complex version of the Minor Arcana. Important Reminder!

I keep seeing posts about how to become a hellenic polytheist– all emphasizing an extraordinary amount of reading & research.

That is all fine and well. Read and research to your heart’s content. Worship is no casual thing to jump into. You should understand who you worship and why they are worthy of worship… BUT–

You also don’t need to read every book on the subject. You don’t have to study like you’re trying to become a priest (unless you truly want to be). Let us remember that the majority of the ancients were NOT extremely devout priests that read every single thing referencing their gods.

You can worship and love your gods without it being the center of your life. You can worship and love your gods without knowing every single thing about Greek history/mythology. Your personal practice and relationship with your gods is not something meant to be rated on an “authenticity scale.” It is personal and sacred to you (and your gods, of course).

Religion is a living breathing thing. You are under no obligation to practice just as the ancients did (don’t know about you, but sacrificing a bull in my area is no easy feat to accomplish). The world evolves, so does our religion, so do the gods.

Always strive to be better; but don’t allow other people to make you feel like you need to be an expert in the classics and Greek history to worship the gods. This is not school, this is religion. We are not graded on these things. Respect & knowledge is an excellent foundation, but HEART is at the center of religion. It’s why we do what we do.

Types of Personal Spirit Guides

The 3 Main Types of Personal Spirit Guides:

These are the four main types of personal spirit guides which split spirit guides up into 3 categories based on the relationship of when, and how you came in contact with them.

Soul Guide:

A soul guide is a guide that has been your guide in another or multiple incarnations. They probably met up with you in a different life, or in between lives, and are now a more constant part of your soul group, spirit council, or spirit family. These entities are usually very connected to you, because of the past that you share, even if you do not remember it. Soul guides are also a lot more connected to your higher self.

Lifetime Guides:

Lifetime guides are guides that are going to be an entity that sticks with you throughout your entire life. These guides are assigned at birth, and will connect with you during this lifetime. They may choose to leave once the life is done, or may continue on with you depending upon many different factors.

Short-term Guides, and Temporary Guides:

Short-term guides also sometimes referred to as temporary guides are guides that will show up from time to time in your life. These guides usually come into your life in order to teach you a lesson and then will leave once the lesson is learned. They will usually come in the form of animals, or mythical creatures, so that you can receive your message from whatever form they take. They will come to you in times of great need, dire situations, or when you must learn a life lesson, and will last with you and tell that time is complete.

The roles of the guides:

These are the main roles that guides usually fit into. A guide can take up one of these roles, or they can take up multiple of them, or multiple guides can take up the same roles.

Main Spirit Guide, and Primary Spirit Guide:

The main spirit guide also sometimes referred to as the primary spirit guide is the entity that watches over the rest of your soul group, spirit council, or spirit family, and will make sure that they are doing what they are supposed to. these guides will communicate and even manage, or coordinate the rest of your soul group, spirit council, or spirit family in order to keep everything going smoothly, and in line with your higher self’s plan. Main Spirit guides are usually going to be lifetime guides, or soul guides.

Teacher Guides, and Philosopher Guides:

Teacher guides also sometimes referred to as philosopher guides is a guy that teaches you lessons that you need to learn, and will help you figure out things in your personal life. They will try to teach you everything they think you need to know, and will try to do it in the best manner for you, and when you are ready to learn it. These types of guides are very intuitive, intelligent, reasonable, wise, and logical. They will usually focus on specific teachings that they are assigned to teach you by your higher self. These guides will help you problem solve and help you work through certain situations in order to better yourself. Teacher guides can be short-term guides, lifetime guides, or even soul guides.

Helper Guides:

Helper guides are guides that will try to help you with anything that you need to accomplish. They are a lot like good friends that you can always count on for assistance, and will help you achieve a certain desire, or outcome. These guides will usually be called on by the practitioner in order to ask for their help in certain situations, but the guide can always help without being asked. Helper guides can be short-term guides, lifetime guides, or even soul guides.

Healing Guides, and Doctor Guides:

Healing guides sometimes referred to as doctor guides our guides that are skilled in the act of healing. These guides are usually called upon when you need healing, or will help you heal when you are injured. These guides may even be short-term guides that pop in just to heal you when you are injured. A lot of the time these guides also take the form of animals in order to heal you using the energy of that animal. These guides may also help you in healing others, if you ask them to and can be powerful allies of channeling healing energies. Healing guides can be short-term guides, lifetime guides, or even soul guides.

Joy guides, and Child Guides:

Joy guides sometimes referred to as child guides (not to be confused with guides that take the form of children) are guides that try to make you happy when you are feeling down, or need a pick-me-up. They usually will have a great childlike wonder which is why they are referred to sometimes as child guides. A lot of the time these guides are also very energetic, and optimistic allowing them always to make you feel good even in the darkest of times. Joy Guides can be short-term guides, lifetime guides, or even soul guides.

Spirit Guardian, Protector Guides, Gatekeeper Guides, or Guardian Angel:

Spirit guardian also referred to as protector guides, gatekeeper guides, or guardian angel are guides that will watch out for your well-being. These guides will usually defend you from threats, and keep you out of harm’s way. This entity will also protect you when you open yourself up energetically, and will also keep away other entities that you do not want to interact with. They will also protect the connection of entities that you’re communicating with during spiritual communication. These guides may also tell you how to defend yourself, and will keep watch over you. Spirit guardians are usually going to be soul guides, or long-term guides, but can still sometimes be short-term guides in certain situations.

Journey Guide, and Message Bearer Guides:

Journey guides also referred to as messenger bearing guides are going to be usually short-term guides that show up with a message for you, and then leave after you receive the message, or after you complete a certain task. These guides will usually come out of nowhere to help you on your journey by giving you a certain wisdom, or understanding that you need. These Guides also usually take animal form in order to deliver their message through the animal symbolism they possess. These guides can be incredibly helpful when they make their presence known to you. A lot of the time they may give you a message in meditation, or in your dreams. Journey guide are most definitely going to be short-term guides.

Shadow Spirit Guides:

Shadow spirit guides are guides that challenge you to face the hidden parts of yourself that you don’t usually deal with. This usually makes you deal with such things as fears, insecurities, and hidden parts of your sub conscience, That you may have locked away. These guides may also take forms that you fear, or are uncomfortable around in order to show that they are indeed the shadow guide. They will do all of this in order to allow you to better yourself, and we’ll still have your common good at heart. Shadow guides are usually going to be soul guides, or lifetime guides.

Creative Guides:

Creative guides are guides that inspire, and motivate practitioners to create, and will try to get you to make, and create new things. They will try to be your muse, and can inspire arts, and can help clear artist block. Creative guides can be short-term guides, lifetime guides, or even soul guides.

A Crash Course in Warding

Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.

What are wards? Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.

Why should I ward my space and my things? Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.

So what do I need to do first? Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.

I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what? Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.

Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.

How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item

Smoke or spray item.

Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).

How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space

Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.

Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]

Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.

For multiple floors, repeat on each level.

For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.

I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.

You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.

So why do we go to the right? Is that important? Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]

Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others? Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.

That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward? Let’s list a few.

Symbol/Sigil Wards

Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.

Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.

As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.

Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)

Pick an item - any item.

Get your warding intentions in mind.

Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.

If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.

Vocal Wards

If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.

You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.

This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.

I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false? Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.

In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

WITCHES NEED A SECRET SYMBOL FOR SAFE PLACES

So a lot of us are out of the broom closet so to speak, but many of have to be careful of being public because of the views of the communities we live in. What I propose is a symbol we can put on flyers or in shop windows that means “You’re safe here.”

I don’t believe that a pentagram would work because it’s got so much stigma attached and it’s really easily identifiable. Ideally, we can find something that is not tradition specific. I don’t know. I just want us to be able to put feelers out into the community without painting a target on ourselves for intolerant jerk faces, and I want witchlings that are seeking guidance to be able to do so in a safe environment. I mean, how badass would it be to find a little symbol of solidarity in your favorite coffee shop or bookstore??

So!! I’ve been practicing my palmistry a lot lately and here’s what I have to say on hand types!!

(Before you read any palm, choose a hand to read. Often, the dominant hand is the easiest and most clear to read from.)

Water Hands

Water hands are long. Long, flexible fingers with long, sometimes oval shaped palms. The fingers are usually very slim. The hands usually have very visible blue veins (especially around the wrists) and are usually cool or cold to the touch.

People with water type hands are typically creative and perceptive and can be sympathetic and are usually empaths. They can be moody, emotional, and fickle.

Earth Hands

Earth hands are square and large. Thick palms and fingers, usually the palm and fingers are short but strong. The skin is usually tough and/or coarse.

People with earth type hands have steady morals and values. Can be extremely stubborn and materialistic. They’re much better at dealing with material, tangible things rather than intangible ideas.

Fire Hands

Fire hands have long palms and shorter fingers. The skin is usually flushed or pink, and warm most of the time.

People with fire type hands are often spontaneous, enthusiastic, and optimistic. Usually bold. Can be egotistical and irrational or impulsive. Usually extroverts.

Air Hands

Air hands usually have short palms and long fingers, sometimes with protruding knuckles. The skin on the hands is usually soft and papery feeling/dry (we air hand people use a lot of lotion). Low-set thumbs.

People with air type hands can be sociable, talkative and witty, but are usually introverted at heart. They can be cold and sometimes insensitive. Mutable personalities, comfortable with the tangible and the intangible.

I’ve seen a lot of the time that your hands will match up with your Sun zodiac sign. For example, I’m a Gemini sun, and Gemini is an air sign, and I have air type hands. This, however, is not always the case. My boyfriend is also a Gemini, but he has earth type hands.
