30 Day AA Challenge Day 5, Favorite pairing: Phantomquil (source for fanart is here)

Since I missed a day (and am going to be out of the country for several more days), I thought I’d go ahead and spew up some words about my love for Phantomquill. I usually say “Blackbright” and use that tag indiscriminately (I am of the “it is Phantom unless proven otherwise” school of thought), but just to be absolutely clear which ship I am sailing here, it is the one in which “Bobby Fulbright” is an identity-stealing murderface.

So, why do I like this pairing so much? Basically every reason. It’s rotten and twisted and horrible in the most dramatic ways possible, which is always a plus. I adore both characters. The weird power dynamics between a prisoner-prosecutor and his keeper-subordinate are complicated and interesting and easily lend themselves to kinky headcanons.

But one thing I particularly love about Phantomquill as a pairing is the way that Simon and Phantom are complete inverses of one another. You have someone noble and emotional pretending to be a callous villain and a callous villain pretending to be someone noble and emotional. All the way down to their designs - mostly-black monochrome versus mostly-white with primary colors. They’re thematically opposite in every way.

And yet for all that, their lives are inextricably intertwined at multiple points. Simon was hunting Phantom even before Metis was killed, and due to his strong sense of responsibility, will undoubtedly continue to be involved in his case (and thus Phantom himself) onward. They will be playing this deadly game of hawk and ghost until one of them dies.

How could I not love that?
