… we cannot simply sit and stare at our wounds forever.
Haruki Murakami, 1Q84 (via macrolit)
Just a few years ago, I had no idea what cold felt like, and no way to know how to prepare for it. I didn't know my limit. Zero degrees. No degrees. None of them. Personally, that’s when I start to lose it. In this range, anyone’s capacity to describe what they are feeling—already a... Read More »

Talde shares the restaurants that spawned some of his most popular dishes, including ramen with bacon and egg and buttered toast–infused broth and “phot roast.”
Mr. Talde’s parents are immigrants from the Philippines and his mother cooked almost exclusively Filipino food for him and his two siblings; memories of his childhood dining room table are a blur of bitter melon, milkfish and pig’s blood. But like most kids, he rebelled. He wore baggy jeans and Jordans. He listened to A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. And whenever he could, he rejected the food of his parents’ homeland and embraced the food of his own. “To me, everything that wasn’t Filipino food was American,” he said.

Figured this was worth a shot…. If you’ve been thinking of getting an annual Divvy membership [or know someone who is!] feel free to share my referral link. We both get an extra month of Divvying added for free.
E and I use it all of the time and I’m honestly surprised that more people don’t!
Shit Fountain, 2004, Jerzy S. Kenar
Chicago based sculptor Jerzy Kenar created the public art piece, located at 1001 N Wolcott at Augusta in the East Village neighborhood, in response to those in his neighborhood who refused to pick up after their dogs.
Arguably his most recognizable piece (lol), Kenar has created many other public art installations all over the city. Learn more about him here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerzy_Kenar
If you decide to visit Shit Fountain, please be respectful, as it does sit outside the artist’s home.
An App I Love: SpotHero
I’m selling my car this weekend. I hate driving around, especially in a city. But I realize that sometimes for a lot of people it’s a necessary evil. If you live in a major metropolitan area, you know what a pain finding a parking spot can be. And street parking with meters often isn’t cheap, especially here in Chicago where they’ve been privatized.
A few years ago, I found out about SpotHero. A simple mobile app that shows you garages, lots, secret spots beneath underpasses and more. Pick you place, reserve your spot and often pay less than the door price might be. It’s incredibly useful, especially if you have guests from out of town driving in and not knowing where to park.
SpotHero operates in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Newark, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
I’ve used this app a lot myself and found the customer service to be great and never had an issue. If you want to try it yourself, use my referral link and you’ll get $15 free – but the link is only good for today (Friday).
If you have ever passed those weirdo townhouses on the corner of Canal and Kinzie in Chicago and thought “I wonder what those are like inside,” well, wonder no more.
One of the Harry Weese River Cottages is for sale; the first one to be for sale in over 25 years. It’s everything I hoped it would be and, for a cool $2.3 million, it can be yours.
I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED!
Super 80s. Must have one. MONEY CAT YOU’RE MY ONLY HOPE.
Chicago: come for the 10.25% sales tax, stay for the river’s fecal bacteria.
Hey Chicago,
I can’t emphasize how important it is you come to my show tonight. Not for me, for you. You need this. Really.
It’s called Bad Karate. I run it with Dan Shapiro. We are funny and dumb. There will be readings from Patrick Carberry and Rosamund Lannin. There will be free beer.
Find all the info on Facebook.
Thank you have a nice day.
Really, you guys, anybody who has the good sense and taste to book Rosamund Lannin is worth checking out.
FREE PARKING FOR YOU!
It has been FOREVER since I last posted but this seemed like something you have to know about ASAP.
I was given a Klout Perk to try this valet services called Luxe Valet. This is Chicago so I never turn down a shot at free parking. This is how it went:
Downloaded App, Hesitantly hooked up credit card to said app (because ain’t no one got time for some stupid Uber-like surge charge or some nonsense).
My parents were visiting so I thought I would test it out on the day we were going to the Art Institute. Before I left my house I told Luxe to meet me at the Cosi restaurant across from the Institute (because…caffeine).
That’s right, you heard me. I said I told my valet to meet me at a random spot at a random time and you know what? HE WAS THERE. I rolled up to Cosi (baller I know), jumped out, handed my keys to my guy and away went my car.
The app showed me a picture of my valet. He was wearing the company uniform and he called me as I approached to make sure I knew it was him and he was ready for us.
Wait, it gets better. My parents and I spent the day running around the Art Institute, then meandered to Millennium Park and ended up at the Harris Theater 4 hours later ready to head home. I pulled up the app, hit the button that said I want my car and within 10 minutes my car was handed back to me at my new location! It was like magic.
The app even provided me a live tracking tool so I could see exactly where my car was as it was returned to me. They even made the little avatar look exactly like my car. Nice touch.
Here is the crazy part. The fee would have been no more than $15! That is less than a garage!!! That is when they had me. Now I did ask about “surge charges” and there are certainly times when the pricing will be more. The examples they gave me were concerts + ball games. I don’t have much more info than that so like with all new services, ask questions before you use it.
I do suggest you give it a try. And because they are clever marketers you can use the code: Shannon43 and get $20 worth of free parking which as I mentioned is a lot. (Full disclosure, I get credits too when you use this code).
I plan to use this service all the time.
Before you head out, investigate their service area though. I planned to use it when I went to the Shedd but museum campus isn’t in their service area yet.
I hope you find this useful. Let me know how it goes for you!
Shannon

Little Moments in Chicago
Our Chicago made, debut feature length comedy has a trailer!
We’re pretty pumped with how it turned out and wanted to share it with you folks. It’s been a long time coming and we’re happy/relieved to let it breathe a little as we make some festival stops. I CoWrote/Directed it with my buddy Hunter under our film company moniker DimeStore Films and we were lucky enough to work with some super talented people from Chicago as well as our two lead actors from LA (Joe Hursley and Steve Lemme of Super Troopers & Broken Lizard).
Hope you dig it! And bonus if you’re from/in Chicago, you should notice a lot of familiar haunts. Spread the word or find out more at OWHFilm.com
Thanks for being a part of this!
