He looked like shit, that was the only way to describe it.

Gone was the perpetual glow that came off of his vessel, that intangible cocoon of energy that drew you to him. It was warm and safe, pulsing with power, and now… it was just gone, fading away to nothing.

He opened his eyes as you walked in, barely able to lift his head from the flat pillow.

“Y/N?” His voice was as cracked as his pale lips.

“Hey, Cas.” You smiled, approaching the foot of the bed slowly, politely, lest he ask you to leave.

“What are you doing here?” He sat up and the thin blanket fell away, revealing a smooth, bare chest and a ratty old bathrobe that barely covered him.

“Sam pinged your phone,” you admitted, rounding the bed to approach him.

Castiel’s jaw clenched and he shook his head. “I told him I was fine,” he grit, angry.

“It was my fault. I…you sounded terrible and I thought you could use some help.”

“I’m- I’m-”

He cut himself off as a spasm shook his body, forcing a heavy cough up from his chest. It sounded wet and terrible, and your face creased with worry.

“Fine,” he finished after the worst had passed, clearing his throat and laying back against the headboard. “You should be helping Sam find Dean. Not standing here watching me cough.”

Had a doc appt (just my yearly checkup) a couple days ago and I asked her about checking to see if my measles vaccine from when I was a kid was still good, since I’d heard it could lose effectiveness over time. She nodded and had a lab done and turned out I was NOT still immune to measles, so got my booster today.

Get your vaccines, folks!

“I have a question about a vaccine,” I say, and the look of ‘god fuckin dammnit not again’ that flashed across this poor doctor’s face, followed by abject relief when I said “I’ve heard that the measles vaccine can lose effectiveness over time and I’d like to make sure mine is still good.” says everything really.

“Oh thank god,” she literally said. “Yes of course. That’s true, and we can do a blood test and see. If you don’t still have antibodies we can get you a booster scheduled.”

“That question goes poorly a lot, doesn’t it,” I say.

“You have no idea.”

Boosting this (lol, pun unintended but allowed to stand with pride) and adding: measles often needs updating in adulthood, they’ll usually throw in a rubella update with it; chickenpox might also need updating, mine did; and get your whooping cough updated, especially if you spend time around pregnant folk or small babies. (I say this from an Australian perspective.)

Honestly, even if you had actual chicken pox, maybe talk to your doctor about a titer test for it. (Titer testing is the blood test to see if you’re still immune.)

I had a mild case of chicken pox as a toddler (the vaccine wasn’t out yet) and then when I was 25, I was exposed to the virus again because I was around someone who had shingles.

I got chicken pox again!

And I’m lucky I didn’t die, because I had a very high fever and it’s SUPER dangerous in adults!

(Vaccinate your fucking kids, though, because yes, kids can die from chickenpox, too.)

People kept saying “No, you mean you had shingles.” Nope! Doctor confirmed it was chicken pox, not shingles. You can get chicken pox more than once, it’s just uncommon. (And from what I’ve heard, a lot of times it happens to people who have just been exhausted and stressed the fuck out beyond all reason.)

John Winchester is buried the next night, in the private cemetery near the back of the Winchester’s garden. Sam and Dean’s mother lies beside him, her headstone weathered from almost twenty-five years of exposure. Per Sam’s wishes, you don’t join the others at the funeral pyre, but you can see the plumes of smoke rising out of your window as John’s body burns. Cremation is a ritual among hunters, Sam’s told you, it frees the spirit and severs all ties with the earth, giving it leave to either float to heaven or sink down to hell.

Sam returns close to midnight, his body heavy and sagging. He’s beyond tears, and he doesn’t say a word as he retreats to the bathroom to wash up. He returns in his nightshirt and sits heavily on the bed next to your hip.

“Do you feel better?” he asks, his voice monotone.

You wiggle your fingers and raise your arms. “I’m getting stronger,” you reply softly. “What about you? Are you okay?”
