They hadn’t drawn out this game together for so long just for one night. It was just a start to everything she wanted with him. As good as this was, he seemed like the kind of person who only got better the more they knew each other. Maybe nobody was committing to anything long-term–and this could all be over in a matter of days if they actually did find Bucky–but it could be a lot of fun while it lasted.

That look on his face sent a thrill through her, the way his eyes slid over her so dark and hungry, and the corner of her mouth curved up in a smile. She made a soft, encouraging sound at the way his hands slid over her, tipping her head to make space. Her hands traced down that well-muscled back as she arched into him, needing more of… everything. 

Them finding Bucky or not finding him didn’t dictate the end of this. He refused to give it that much power in his life. If he was just a distraction for her while they were on a hunting trip, so be it, but she would have to own up and admit that. He got the feeling it wasn’t that, though. He wanted to know her, everything that made her quake, every sound she could make for him, and this was just the start of that learning. 

His hands slid from her chest to hike her up higher on the wall, his lips trailing down from her neck and over her shoulder down to her chest. Shifting closer, he pinned her back against the wall with hands wrapped around her waist, fingers spanning the undersides of her breasts. His lips brushed over the peak of her before finally wrapping around her.

Natasha was usually a good judge of character, but if there was one thing that was true about her relationship with Sam from beginning to end, it was that she would continually misjudge him. One side of that issue was that it was hard for her to believe anyone was really that good. Oh, people did a lot of good things when it was easy or others were watching, but not many of them were still good when things were hard and desperate. The other side was that she didn’t believe anyone that good would ever want her. For now, maybe, but not forever. Not a single part of her expected forever with Sam, or with anyone except for Clint, who knew exactly how fucked up she was and for some reason still loved her.

The truth was that not a lot of people Nat had been with cared about her pleasure. They wanted something from her, and she was very good at giving them what they wanted, or at least the illusion of it. She let her hands trace over all that glorious bared muscle, enjoying the way he shifted and shivered for her. She didn’t bother trying not to melt under the intense heat of that kiss, the sheer joy there was in just kissing him after dancing around it for so long, of being held in those arms with all of that beautiful body pressed against hers. She raised her arms to let him take her shirt off, unhooking her bra and tossing it aside with it. She could feel his gaze like he’d used his hands, and her eyes darkened with desire. She very, very much wanted him to use his hands.

Sam knew better than to ever think in terms of forever. The lives they all lead didn’t lend themselves to it well at all. He did know that he wanted more than just this one night, but he didn’t think that was going to be a problem just yet. He had watched her try to protect Steve when she could get away with it, had watched her help them rip the world apart for one man. He thought she was far better than she gave herself credit for. 

He wanted plenty from her, but it was far from along the way other people wanted things from her. He didn’t want her power, her skills, her knowledge. His eyes darkened further when she was completely bared to him. His hands slid up from her waist to brush over the curve of her with a soft groan. Sliding his thumbs over the peaks of her, he tipped his head to brush his lips over her neck.

It was true that Sam was a much calmer person overall. She’d rarely seen him lose his temper, and never in a way she felt he’d truly lost control. That didn’t mean he couldn’t, just that nothing they’d been through together yet had warranted it. She wasn’t the type to wear most of her feelings on the outside either. It was the part of her that enjoyed a risk that was looking forward to seeing just what he was like in this context. It was a different way of losing control, and she had a guess it was something to see.

That smile sent heat sliding through her, and she gave him a slightly wicked one in return. She arched against him as her back met the wall, her hand sliding beneath his shirt and pressing against warm skin. She made sure the door locked behind them before she gave all her attention to that kiss. After all the time they’d spent playing this game, it was a relief not to have to hold back. Every bit of waiting and wanting went into it, her lips hungry on his. Her legs tightened around him as they reached the bedroom, and her hands skimmed along his sides beneath his shirt again, this time with every intention of taking it off.

It took so much to properly set off Sam’s temper that he genuinely hoped they never came across anything that did. Slowest burn temper in the history of ever, but he had a habit of using that temper to atomic bomb bridges. In this game they were playing, he knew that she had no idea how deep his patience really ran. She was about to start finding out and he wanted to see her absolutely lost in the heights he wanted to drive her to. He didn’t think too many people succeeded at driving Natasha out of her mind with pleasure, but he had every intention of being on that list. 

That small hand packed so much heat against his skin he shivered lightly, approving of the sound of the lock. That kiss could knock him flat on his ass if he let it, but he had other plans for all of that wanting. Feeling his shirt rising, his muscles bunched as he reached to pull it off, tossing it to a corner of the room. Sliding them under her shirt, he tucked them into the nip of her waist and pressed flush against her, his body all hard lines against her. He spent a long moment just kissing her, deep and hungry, pressed against her and letting her feel exactly what she was doing to him. When the need to feel more of her skin finally started to encroach on the need to devour her, his hands slid, pulling her shirt up and off so he could look his fill.

Natasha had been disbelieving at first. No one was that good, but she’d spent enough time with Sam to know now that he was exactly what he looked like on paper. Steve could hardly have found a more perfect best friend if they’d picked each other out of a catalogue. There were times she had to hold back a smirk because they were practically the same person.

Except, no offense, but she’d never wanted to climb Steve like a tree. She couldn’t have said where exactly the difference was, but there had never been anything remotely like attraction between them. Her breath hitched at being lifted in those strong arms, and she wrapped around him, lips trailing down his neck. “Let’s go, gorgeous,” she purred in his ear.

There were times he could admit to him and Steve being remarkably similar. There was a glaringly large difference in them. Sam lacked the sheer amount of ‘fite me’ that Steve Rogers was in possession of, and a cooler temper besides. Back at the beginning, he’d wondered why Natasha and Steve weren’t a thing, but as he’d gotten to know them, he could see why. It made it easier to give in to that damn heat she conjured up in him. 

Feeling her breath hitched made him smile, slow and dark, as he slid an arm under her. That purr had him walking over quickly, pressing her back against wall next to the door that would let them back inside. Tipping his head, he brushed his lips along the line of her neck as he reached over with the other hand to open the door. Quickly, but careful, he hauled her inside, catching her lips the moment they were in their apartment. From in there, he knew exactly where the bedrooms were and didn’t need to focus as much. He kissed her hungrily, kicking the door to the bedroom shut behind him before turning to press her into it.

Natasha had been highly suspicious when Sam first entered their lives. The way he just happened to meet Steve wasn’t something she could ignore, and she’d done some digging on her own in those first days purely for Steve’s safety, although he wouldn’t have liked it if he knew. But everything she learned about Sam, on paper and in person, just made her like him more, and he’d proven so many times over that he wasn’t just trustworthy but a genuinely good person, a good friend.

She was going to straight up murder him if he turned his nice guy brain on right now. Playing the long game with him had a price, and apparently she was paying it now. If she let even a little bit of that wanting out, it could easily overwhelm her. She thought she might want to be overwhelmed, now, when they had a stolen night to themselves. She arched gently into those hands, wanting to be closer, but it wasn’t really possible until they started losing more clothes. “Inside?” she murmured, nibbling softly at his bottom lip.

Sam would have been disappointed if no one had taken the time to look into him when he’d first appeared in Steve’s life. But then, that would have meant they were careless, and that was something they certainly weren’t. Luckily, he wasn’t one for lying about much of anything, and he’d lived his entire life that way. 

There was no room for his nice guy brain when it came to having a lap full of Natasha Romanoff kissing him the way she was. Not after all this time of dancing around one another, teasing and adding to the wanting. Standing up, he just kept his arms full of her mostly because he could and he really wanted to. “Definitely inside,” he groaned softly.

Natasha was known to mix business with pleasure when it gave her an advantage. This wasn’t business, and she had no reason to treat Sam like he was. At first, maybe, when she’d wondered whether Steve’s new friend could be trusted, but he’d proven himself dozens of times over. He had more lines than she did. She’d trust him before she’d trust herself.

It was that rebellious streak that made him even more irresistible though. He didn’t kiss like a nice boy. She wouldn’t have even known what to do with one of those. A soft sound escaped her at the gentle press of teeth, a shiver running through her at his hands warm on her. She all but melted into them, deepening the kiss as her hands slid higher, tracing out carved muscle.

Sam never blamed her for treating him like nothing but business when he’d first entered the picture. He was an outlier to their world in the largest way possible back then. Now, he was simply one of them, kept close and trusted in a way that he never took for granted. 

There was no reason whatsoever for him to kiss like a nice boy, he wasn’t feeling nice when it came to Natasha. Chasing down that sound was an immediate necessity, his hands tightening slightly at the shiver. His hand slid up higher on soft, warm skin as they sank deeper into that kiss, wanting her closer.

Natasha might have started flirting with Sam out of boredom or habit, but it wasn’t why she persisted with it. If the attraction hadn’t been real, she wouldn’t have bothered, and he was the sort of person who only got more attractive as she got to know him better. He was beautiful, of course, but a lot of people were. It was that loyalty and goodness, that quiet humor and unwillingness to be pushed, the thoughtful intelligence burning in those gorgeous eyes, that made him so much more dangerous to her.

Giving in to it tonight didn’t change the game at all in her mind. It just added something sweet to it that they’d both been willing to wait for. The sound of that soft groan sent a little thrill through her, the need to hear more of them threatening to override her self-control. Her hands slid beneath his shirt, pressing against warm skin while they kissed, and her teeth scraped soft and teasing over his bottom lip.

Sam wasn’t one for kidding himself. If there was any woman he trusted to know her own mind, it was Natasha. They’d been working together and friends of a sort for long enough that he knew this had nothing to do with business. She was dangerous on a lot of levels, most of which she used to full advantage when she needed to. Her honesty, her loyalty to the people she’d claimed as her family, her amusingly warped humor, all made her dangerous to him if he wasn’t careful. 

He slid a hand over her thigh as they kissed, arching lightly with her touch. His hand tightened gently in her hair at the gentle press of teeth and he returned it with a soft nibble of his own to her bottom lip. He waited for a breath before sliding into a deep, slow kiss, his intent to thoroughly devour her laid clear in it. He slid his hand up and under her shirt to wrap around her trim waist, thumb sliding over warm, soft skin.

The time frame lingered in her mind too. Steve was gone, and they were as alone as they were likely to get for any stretch of time in the near future. Sam was someone she wanted to be able to take the time to fully enjoy. If either of them had wanted something quick, they’d had dozens of opportunities for that. She felt it would be a disservice to the gorgeous, complicated man under her.

She moved easily, enjoying the feel of all that hard muscle pressed against her, her hands tracing slowly up his sides. She could feel that hot gaze like a touch, and her skin ran hot with the need for him to actually use his hands. It wasn’t very fair that he could stoke that fire with just a look, but she wasn’t planning to play fair either. She tucked a knee on either side of his waist as she met those hot, intense kisses, a hand curling over the back of his neck.

Sam didn’t much like having their long game subjected to the ebb and flow of their manhunt. He had every intention of taking his time with her and that alone made tonight an enticing option. At this point, it wasn’t even about ruining their game. He wanted her, and fuel had been added to that fire consistently to the point he wondered how he had managed to keep his hands to himself. 

He knew exactly what those hands could do, the streamlined strength and power hidden in delicate bones and soft, pale skin. His hands curled around her hips to pull her close, not even fighting down the soft groan at the feeling of her pressed so close and nowhere near close enough. Slowly, one hand slid up the line of her spine as they kissed, the heat of them licking at his spine as he tangled that hand in her hair.

Natasha had spent most of her life burying that warmth so it wouldn’t get her killed. She was learning to coax it out again in small doses, and there were a handful of people she felt safe enough to do that with. A part of her suspected it still would be the death of her someday, but she’d accepted that she wasn’t likely to reach old age with the kind of life she led. At least with the Avengers, she’d be dying for people she cared about and who cared about her.

She pressed further into the space at that small invitation, letting her lips drift feather-light down his neck. Natasha couldn’t help but be curious about just how much they could blur that line before one of them snapped and crossed it. She couldn’t even confidently say it wouldn’t be her, not with that soft brush of his fingers sending a shiver through her. She shifted easily onto his lap when he tried to move her, fingers curling over the other side of his jaw.

It was so tempting to just cross the line, knowing they wouldn’t always have the time to just enjoy it. Being included on that short list of people that she allowed herself to be even remotely warm and soft with made him want to see it as often as she was willing to let him. Getting it from her like this? That was something else and it was hard not to capitalize on it at times. But then, he had always been good at a long game. 

His arm tightened around her when she was settled in his lap, tugging her flush to his chest. He took the moment to rake his eyes over her face, hot and intent in a way he hadn’t fully turned on her yet. His other hand slid up into her hair before he tipped his head to kiss her. There was nothing soft about it, but it was slow and intent.

“I’ll look forward to it.” The sound of his laugh brought more warmth to her smile, enough that it reached her eyes. They could probably all use a little mischief, whether Steve was willing to admit it or not. He was so serious lately, she wasn’t sure how he’d take it, but she trusted Sam to have a sense for timing. He might be blunt when it was called for, but he wasn’t tactless.

Natasha loved flirting with Sam, loved drawing this out and getting a feel for each other, but she knew she was nearing the end of her own willingness to keep on opposite sides of that line, thin as it might be. The soft glide of his fingertips over her arm was more distracting than it should have been, and that alone told her plenty. They could afford to be distracted right now. That wouldn’t always be the case. She tipped her head, pressing a soft kiss to the corner of his jaw.

He liked the way she looked in that moment, the warmth in her that he knew was always there if you could bring it to the surface. Eventually, he was going to turn his attention to bringing his friend out of his funk. He was just waiting, biding his time until he felt like it would be welcome, once Steve accepted that he was just going to have to wait. 

That kiss made him hum quietly and he tipped his head just enough to bare that spot for her better. Slowly, he slid his hand down her arm to her side, brushing it softly over her shirt. Dancing the line didn’t mean they couldn’t blur it, just a bit. Giving her enough time to stop him if she didn’t want to be moved, he tightened his arm around her with the intent to pull her onto his lap.

“I think I’d like to see that someday,” she admitted with a slow smile. Sam’s version of trouble was probably very different from hers, which was to say not something Nat would consider trouble at all. She could use more of the good-natured kind in her life, although Clint brought plenty of his own. He’d brought to life a side of her she hadn’t even known existed.

She wanted to hum happily as his arm tightened around her, but she managed to hold it back. He was so warm. She didn’t know if she wanted to climb into his lap or just curl up beside him and sleep in those arms. It was strange to even think about the softer option.

“You won’t ask though.” She gave a low laugh, running a hand gently over his thigh. She could read that silence as clearly as if he’d spoken it aloud. “I hope you never have to.” Not because she wouldn’t gladly come to bat for him, but because she hoped things were never that desperate for him.

“This keeps up and you will,” he admitted with a laugh. His trouble certainly fell more under mischief, he knew, and it was probably something he would happily drag her into. A little bit of fun to break up the monotony was far from a bad idea. 

It was all he could do not to pull her closer than she already was. It was a fine line, the dance they were in. Figuring out how much softness was welcome was something he was always actively working at. The offer of it was nearly always there for her, whether he gave it voice or not. 

His fingers slid lightly over her arm in silent confirmation, unsurprised that she could read his silence. “I hope not, too,” he admitted, because that would be a terrible day for him indeed. Her skin was nearly distractingly soft under the tips of his fingers.

“Lazy I can’t picture,” she hummed playfully. “But a bored Sam sounds like a dangerous thing.” She didn’t think any of her boys did well with idleness. It was one of the things that was difficult about this mission. There were too many days where nothing happened, when they had no new information and no leads to chase down. Natasha was better suited to it than she was to, say, fighting a plague of aliens attacking New York. She’d been trained for a lot of things, but she was better at spying than combating an entire army.

She was happy to cuddle into that arm, but she’d have to be crazy not to be. Nobody except Clint would look at Natasha and call her snuggly, but she was when it suited her and she was comfortable enough to let her guard down that far. Sam had more than earned that from her, and he was warm and comfortable. “That goes both ways, you know,” she said softly. “You need someone at your back, and we’re there.” There weren’t a lot of instances where she felt comfortable speaking for Steve, but that one was easy enough. Anyone could see how loyal he was to Sam.

She wasn’t wrong, by any stretch of the imagination. He didn’t handle idleness well, never had, hadn’t been raised to. He was just lucky that if he could at least keep his brain active, then he could tolerate the idle body. “Bored Sam often gets into a lot of trouble,” he admitted with a chuckle, thinking of times it had gotten him exactly that as he’d grown up. 

He rather liked that Natasha was cuddly when she was in the mood for it, it fit what he knew of her. That softness that she gave to so few people also included her personal space. Her soft words made him wrap his arm around her gently and snuggle her just that little bit closer. “I know,” he agreed, just like he also knew he would never ask. The people he’d become close to had all given more than anyone ever should have had to. It was part of why he stood by them, backed them, gave them what support and care he could and they allowed.

His casual acceptance did a lot for her. She was working on accepting it herself, and most of the time, she thought she was doing okay. Natasha wasn’t sure she even wanted children. It might be a totally moot point. What bothered her was that she didn’t have the choice. “Shouldn’t you get through one impossible task before you volunteer for another one?” she teased gently. She wouldn’t lie and say it never crossed her mind that the Red Room might have survived somehow. After all, they’d all thought Hydra was gone too.

“Understood.” She smiled, tilting her head. She felt the comment clarified more about Sam than it did about her, but since she’d started the conversation trying to understand him better, that worked out nicely. She started gathering up the dinner things when they were finished, but only enough to set them aside so they’d be easy to take in later. It was a nice night, and she wasn’t quite ready to go back inside. She moved closer to him instead, putting her back to the low ledge circling the roof and tipping her head up at the stars. “Thanks. For humoring me,” she said softly.

Her teasing made him give her a broad, easy smile that was altogether too relaxed. “Now why would I do that? Gives me time to get lazy and bored,” he drawled out. After this long with them, he knew he was in it for the long haul, and that meant taking care of them and protecting them even if they didn’t think they needed it. He was quickly learning that not everything that was declared dead actually was, after all. 

He helped gather things, setting them to the side and clearing the space for them. Settling down, he smiled a bit when she settled close. Sam shifted to her side, his arm sliding behind her along the low ledge and his head tipping to follow her gaze. “Wasn’t a hard request to humor,” he shrugged. Giving her these little pieces of himself was easier now than it would have been a year ago.

Truth was just as dangerous as a lie, and sometimes more, depending on what she did with it. This was one conversation where Natasha couldn’t stand to play games though, at least not with Sam. He’d given her nothing but sincerity. She wouldn’t dishonor that by twisting the truth or sidestepping a question. She might not be better than that, but he was.

She couldn’t help a small smile at the way he tried to give her an out anyway, whether he meant to or not. “I physically can’t,” she admitted quietly. “Part of where I was raised, where I was trained. But no, I’m not a fan of tradition for its own sake. A lot of things deserve to stay dead.” Like the Red Room went without saying.

“I can now,” she agreed, with an attempt at lightening the mood. She hadn’t intended to bring it down with such a serious conversation. “It’s nice just to have the option.” She knew she wouldn’t take it right now. Too much red in her ledger. But trying to balance that scale was her choice too, and that made all the difference.

Sam shrugged at her, reaching over to tuck a stray red lock behind her ear. “The why doesn’t matter,” he said softly, the same easy acceptance he had given her for a long time now. “If I didn’t know you dealt with a lot of that yourself, because you’re you and here and not there, I’d say a lot of people would do it for you.” He left the myself included in silence because some things just didn’t need to be said. 

“Exactly!” He beamed easily at her, never once feeling heavy despite the serious turn their conversation had taken. He would always prefer blunt and honest conversation with the people he had decided to keep closer than others. “It’s there when you decide you want it, and it hurts nothing by you not taking it.” The statement was a blanket one meant for both of them.

It wasn’t an unusual answer. She was guessing she could get a similar one by asking any of the Avengers the same thing, including herself. She found that it wasn’t that satisfying from him though. There was a part of her that didn’t like to think of Sam as living for the fight like the rest of them. She and Steve and Clint didn’t have homes to go back to. Bruce and Thor would always be what they were. Tony was… Tony. But Sam? Sam could get out if he wanted to.

She matched the serious expression because it was a serious question. She wasn’t sure she had a better answer to it, but she usually tried for honesty with her friends. “I never did,” she admitted, leaning back on her elbow. “Traditional family is out for me, but… I don’t know. There has to be more than just the fight, right?” She didn’t know what that looked like for her, but she liked that she at least had the option now. Her life was hers to decide what to do with it.

He knew that it wasn’t a stance most of the Avengers would expect out of him. He was the normal one. The one with family and no powers and the ability to have something normal if it was what he wanted. The problem was that he didn’t know what he wanted outside of what he had now. He listened intently for her answer, knowing that in this, she’d give truth for truth. She used the truth more than most people would have expected. He liked that about her. 

“Good thing that tradition is meant to change, huh?” He gave her an easy smile, “No tradition is what it was a hundred years ago, hell, even fifty.” He scratched lightly at the line of his jaw as he thought. “There is more than the fight, always will be, waiting when we’re ready for it. So if you want something that isn’t the fight, you can have it.”
