(prefacing this with: I mean this with complete sincerity! it's not an insult. also sorry for being so rambly) I think Vianca, from what we've seen of her and know of her so far, is a really good and rare portrayal of a phenomenon I've seen a lot coming from cis girls/women toward trans folks
like she's not transphobic in that she doesn't act like trans characters are any gender but who they say they are, like with Qiu or a trans MC. At the same time, when she tells Qiu that they could audition for a "lady role" for a future recital and offers to try out for a "male role" herself--she has great intentions, and I love what she's trying to do, but she also doesn't get the difference between her, as a cis person, choosing to "genderswap" a role and a nonbinary person being pressured by society to "choose a side" in the binary
Likewise, the way she acts with a trans MC who is transitioning "away from womanhood" at the start of Step 2 is (I mean this as a compliment) almost uncomfortably true to life. ik you've mentioned she prefers only having female friends because she wants to be friends with people who can relate to the experience of being a girl--and in my experience coming out as transmasc, there have been a lot of cis women except the ones who still treat me like a woman who suddenly get awkward around me and act like there's no way I could understand the ~💖female experience💖~ even if they literally watched me get catcalled, like, last week, come on
Again, I mean all this as a compliment! this is a portrayal of something I can't remember seeing in fiction before, a cis ally who genuinely means well but just doesn't "get it" in this particular way and that leads to microaggressions she'd never intentionally say.
while my trans MC might not like her in Step 2 for understandable reasons, I think she's a really interesting character and I'm excited to witness her arc

Thanks, haha. That is what I was trying to go with for her! She doesn't mean to be mean, but is still immature and self-centered in some of her beliefs. Vianca thinks having good intentions and having her own reasons for what she does is what counts. Her view is that not enough people support ladies in society (and this is back in 2014) and so she will, as strongly as possible. She views it as unfair that she wouldn't be allowed to act that way. She takes any advice on her attitude as essentially being told to "not care so much about girls", which she's heard more than enough of already. And she sees herself as not bothering anybody else. She just leaves them alone, so what's the problem? But genders and humans in general are more complicated than she truly gets. Vianca is 14 and thinks she's got it all figured out already. No offense to anyone at that age, but you have plenty of years to keep learning more.
