"Pale White Horse" -The Oh Hellos wip
I'm back on my bullshit but with the current fandom that has me in a chokehold. I blame Bloodymary for making me deeply think about Iron Lung stuff, even though I saw it twice in theaters back in January.
This one will be... 10 to 13 panels long? And I have 3 done so far. But also, I am living that new mom life so I dunno how much time I have. Just gonna ride it out and hope inspiration stays!
This came to me in a vision and I’m going to make it everyone else’s problem
HEAR ME OUT-
I Saw the TV Glow is a movie that made me feel "seen" as a trans person, but not in a shallow affirming way, in a "ceaseless watcher, turn your gaze upon this wretched thing" kind of way.
Anyway, it's good.
im heartless and this is my horizon

I feel a bit concerned about the prevalent idea that Dionysos was the God of wine and party and not Dionysos the Ghost of Old Nights who lurks in the darkness of our rational minds.
What can you tell me about how Dionysus is close to humans compared to other gods? Do you think Dionysus reflects us humans and the human condition?
Hi! This is a great question.
Dionysus is a very "human" god for a number of reasons. First, he's the only Olympian god with a mortal mother. (It's my belief that Dionysus was always fully-divine, never a demigod; sources differ on this, but most seem to support it.) In some sources, he was also raised by mortals (his aunt Ino and her husband Athamas). Second, he's one of the only Greek gods who has experienced death, meaning he has some understanding of mortality. Third, he spent the first years of his existence walking the earth, going from city to city to teach the art of winemaking and spread his cult. That means that he's spent an unusual amount of time among mortals, compared to other gods. He also married a mortal, Ariadne.
In a more mystical/spiritual sense, Dionysus bridges the gap between human and divine, both literally and figuratively. His gift of wine allows humans to enter an altered state of consciousness, allowing us to experience ecstasy and receive mystical insights — in other words, just as Dionysus know something of what it's like to be mortal, he can give us a taste of what it's like to be divine. This has further mystical implications in Orphism, e.g. the Initiate claiming to be of the race of the gods in the Underworld, humanity containing some of Dionysus' essence (according to Olympiodorus), etc. Dionysus literally possesses us when we're drunk, or otherwise in an ecstatic state. He understands humans on our level, and allows us an avenue to become alike to gods ourselves.
In Orphism, Dionysus is the last of the six Orphic Kings (Phanes, Nyx, Ouranos, Kronos, Zeus, Dionysus). To sum up a lot of complicated mystical philosophy, these six gods are all the same entity, the Lord of the Universe, as it manifests on all the different "planes" or "levels" of reality. Phanes is the most abstract, and Dionysus is the most concrete. (Orphic Hymn 30 identifies him directly with Phanes, and his very name identifies him with Zeus.) Zeus is relatively comprehensible to us, being easily anthropomorphized, and interacting directly with us via rain and so forth. But he's still Sky Daddy, up there, relatively inaccessible. Dionysus is the next step down. He's a version of the Lord of the Universe that is here, on our level; an aspect of the Lord of the Universe that we can physically take into our bodies and personally manifest.
If this sounds familiar... well, that's mysticism for you. And the topic of another post.
What all this amounts to is that Dionysus doesn't put as much distance between himself and his worshippers as other gods tend to. I think this is why he's comfortable being called silly nicknames and having more "casual" interactions with worshippers. It's why he shows up to Thebes disguised as a priest of himself. It's why our relationships with him are often so intense and intimate.
As for your second question, yes, Dionysus reflects all the extremes of human nature. Specifically, he reflects the darkness and savagery that we keep locked within, and only express when we're drunk or in a play, etc. But I think that's a separate topic.

Dionysos as Shapeshifter
The parallel between the mirror and the collar. Like the rose universe (multiverse, petals interlocking, variables creating space time)
The shirt was red, but is tinted green. Mental - Material - Realized.
Hair is the sun
Moretta Mask: ether, void, mystic, transformation, 0, ability to change - black hole? No. Black holes are ether suns, electromagnetism, sun is gravity...
Sun symbolism... the individual soul - black hole is sun before formed, so able to be Anything
(drawings of a black hole taking in energy and expelling it out, a light prism refracting light, egg and sperm labeled as "an example - DNA transformation, energy going into the ∞ labeled as doorway, and then the energy going out more focused)
so the moretta mask is the mask of the shapeshifter
What are the horns?
horns = bull = submission (hence the name of the image)
Arms crossed, submissive, sure, but like a bull, powerful and must be respected
the bull is the ocean, too
what is the ocean? the source, beginning
this image is Dionysos as the beginning of creation, the creator becoming creation
Leopard eyes behind: direct intent, focus, pointed stare
invoking the same stare as the one that stops time, (s sound drawing), s sound, love and timelessness
They’re calling me every slur under the sun over on twitter for this post
Would you sell liquor to this baby
Yes
No
I don’t think life begins at contraception but I’d still sell liquor to baby
Wait hold on rb canceled that’s the wrong word wait no stop
so embarrassing to like music. "yeah, these are all my favorite noises", "im gonna pay money to go to the room where they play this sound really loud", "im gonna 'buy' these noises so i can listen to them later". humiliating. literature isnt like this
