climbing the walls ft. ?????

the sound of wave crests hitting rocks fill jinam's ears as he jabs his climbing hook into yet another tight wedge of the rock wall he was on. the ocean rolled on forever just a few yards to his right, but he had a couple more meters to go before he could enjoy the sight. to be fair, he had more experience than most in rock-climbing considering he'd come from the mountains. the seven meter wall was beginner level stuff, so he'd barely broken a sweat by the time his dust covered fingers folded over the top level. back muscles flexing visibly, jinam pulls all of his weight to the top and stands to his feet with a brief burst of confidence. he steals a glance at the sea, before offering one to the person who still stood where he'd started. "are you sure i can't convince you to take the fun way up ?" he asks, considering there was a far easier path to where he was than the one he'd taken.

it's a familiar sight, nabi watching the back of someone traversing a cliff, the same way her dad would bring her and her sister out on the rare weekends and teach them ( just nara ) to climb. the sea to their backs and dirt rock facing them, there's a path winding up along the small cliff, clearly trodden on by foot. and there are marks where jinam's climbing hooks have left an imprint, a route more difficult and harsh than the other. but... nabi does know her limits. she never did inherit those mountaineering genes. "i like my neck where it is!" she calls back, hands cupped together. the road more travelled is her path of choice, making it to where jinam stands in a little more time than he took, but the sight of the sea waits for her while nabi gets to where she wants to be. "that was pretty cool, though," she admits, a grin when she finally reaches the other. "when'd you start climbing?"

the confirmation that this person had indeed worked at jvyeon when the 'incident' went down brought about an unexpected reaction in jinam. rather than show anger or even apathy towards her, the faintest hint of a smile appeared on his face. there was even a small chuckle that escaped him, something he couldn't help considering what a ridiculous circumstance it was. "it's okay, really. sunset jail wasn't that bad — pretty much just a room with a couch, a tv and a vending machine," he explains, shaking his head. "besides, i got that landscaping job done before the deadline, so no harm done," he concluded, easily able to put himself in her shoes.

if some guy came into the store he was working at trying to purchase an ax, a shovel, tarps and large trash bags with an awkwardly silent disposition, he'd have been rather put off too. he may have even done what she did and called for help before running away. regardless, it was pretty easy for him to brush off the situation as a misunderstanding, and he hoped she was able to do the same.

"i actually work here now ... well, at the hotel more specifically," he informed her, his feet shuffling with restlessness. "which is why i'm here actually. the rabbits i wanna protect are the ones visiting the gardens at midlight, but of course they bring the foxes around. i wanna make sure they're safe but can also come and go as they please, if that makes sense," he rambles, clearly not used to this much conversation in one setting. still, it was worth the discomfort if he could reach some sort of solution, and he had faith that nabi could help him find it.

his smile's like the sun appearing despite a weather forecast of thunderstorming rain, nabi mirroring it when he doesn't seem too upset by the whole thing. not at all, in fact—it doesn't even sound like the other's mad at her! her huff of laughter turns into a little giggle when he touts the amenities of jail at the sunset galleria, tickled by his optimism about it. "i'm still sorry about it," nabi says, scrunching up her nose in expression, "i'll give you my employee discount to make up for it, okay?"

and amends have been made, then! "i'm nabi, by the way. i'm working here too, i mean..." a sweep of her hand down to the logo of johwa's apron, fingers wiggling to show off her employee badge pinned right above. "so i'll see you around, too!" the johwa employee beams at him, all teeth and cheer over the new acquaintance and clearly, fellow critter fan.

"that makes sense," she says, nodding, picking up his chatter from where he left off. maybe trying a little too hard to assure him she's not going to report him for fox murders this time. "i'm guessing you don't wanna fence 'em all up, right?" so that's a no to the chicken wire, she supposes, but johwa pet supplies always has a couple other tricks up their sleeves. nabi sidesteps past the gardener to pick out a set of repellents that'll work for foxes, lining them up on the counter. "these are the ones the boss usually puts out, they won't hurt the foxes or anything, just gross 'em out with smells that they hate." she throws him two thumbs up, hoping that's the solution that he's looking for.

her closet runs a size larger than it’s meant to. it’s the way she was brought up, mother always bringing home dresses for girls twelve and up when she’s only eight. you’ll grow into it, mother promises, secures the sash around her waist in a tighter bow so the dress doesn’t completely swallow her form. the thing about growing up with habits is you don’t question if it’s normal. you simply believe it to be so, chalk it up to some shared experience when the shoe flies off your foot as you’re walking down the sidewalk. that is to say, kang nara only knows herself to grow, to always be challenged with fitting into bigger shoes and even then, bigger still. she doesn’t know what it means to have her shoes fit her the way it’s meant to. to come as she is.

suppose it’s why the lady gets to her. the customer hassles her colleague for an expired discount and nara stamps her feet to the ground. a minute later, and the lady resorts to yelling. to mocking nara’s authority in what she sees as a dead-end job. to pointing out all the ways in which her clothes don’t fit. and suppose she’s right. because kang nara may have a bright future ahead of her, but the thing about the future is it isn’t set in stone. it’s a finish line that’s always shifting. it’s big shoes that’s constantly growing. and no matter what nara claims to have, all that she really has is this: this dead-end job in a mall.

now it’s ten minutes past the end of her shift and she’s sitting in the back trying to hold in her tears. the specks of mascara on the hem of her sleeve lets her know she’s failed. there’s a voice in the back of her head reminding her that nabi’s waiting for her somewhere, but she can’t bring herself to get up and walk. so she gives herself five more minutes, and five more minutes after that, and she doesn’t move from her spot until she hears the door open. and maybe it’s instinct from all the years she’s dealt with her sister barging in on her after an argument with their mom, to know that it’s nabi without having to see her. “nabi, just uh…” nara keeps her back to her, places the back of her hand over her nose as she sniffles, “just give me five minutes. i’ll be out in a sec.”

her clothes used to fit a little too small, hand-me-downs from an older sister sized tinier than she is. quite literally, with nabi always playing catch up to nara and easily her older sister’s height despite the couple of years in between them. at least, they did for a while, when she was still learning to fit herself into the spaces that her family needed her to be. the right size in their family of four, little sister in just the right shape. it doesn’t really bother her. she likes it this way, no too-big expectations to grow into, knowing exactly how she fits into everything. besides, she shot up enough in adolescence that her grandparents started buying her her own set of clothes, though she still likes her sister’s sense of style.

all of this to say, nabi has never had shoes too big to fill, and they’re not so small that they pinch, either. she catches up to her older sister now with her own footsteps in the grass, tall sunflower to nara’s little sun. it’s why she likes hanging out at jvyeon when her shift’s over, settled behind the backroom and helping replace stock while she chatters on about the silly updates to her day. like how the aunty at the really good kalguksu store gave her a little extra toppings for her noodles today, and the adventure with the garter snake that came in for an overdue moulting. the little trivialities that fill up the space between them, settling into something quiet and comforting. usually, that’s what happens at the end of the day—but nabi’s been waiting almost ten minutes, and it’s in her little sister duties to be impatient and demand attention from nara.

“eonni!” nabi opens the door and sticks her head in, quickly followed by the rest of her. nara’s turned away from her, but there’s something about the hunch of her back that she recognises from their childhood, the worst of the fights she remembers nara having with their mum. “okay,” nabi says, even though she’s not leaving the room. she pokes her older sister’s thigh, the turn of her mouth tilted down when she realises that nara’s crying. “what’s wrong?”

zurie was wound with excitement ever since nabi posed the idea of seeking out an old hidden jungle gym somewhere in the mall. there seemed to be so many secrets still hidden behind boarded up doorways and wings that were under construction, even after working there for two years. it just may have been her favorite facet of sunset galleria and now the excitable pair were in hot pursuit of a small sliver of nostalgic bliss.

zurie made a step out of her clasped hands, allowing nabi to hoist herself up, and the former soon followed. she watched with great interest as nabi unveiled the slide, and clapped happily at the sight of it. even though this particular model had no to ties to her, it certainly reminded her of afternoons spent with her friends loitering at playgrounds as a child. they'd spend hours splayed out on sun-bleached plastic recounting their childhood horror stories and big plans to take over the world someday.

"you're on !" she answered nabi's challenge, gripping the biggest tarp and sliding it down with some effort. as it cascaded down to the floor in a dusty heap, a large interwoven network of tunnels and tubes was revealed in its place, some with circular windows in the side. "oooh ! i remember things like this ... i'm pretty sure i got lost in one once," zurie giggled bashfully, almond shaped nails tapping the ladder leading up into the tunnels. there was one final square-shaped part of the jungle gym still covered up with plastic, so deductive reasoning lead her feet towards it. "this must be the ball pit ?" she asks, glancing back at nabi with an inquisitive expression.

with a wave of zurie's hand, the jungle gym appears in its full glory, safety netting still in one piece. "no way!" it's a huge structure of crisscrossing tubes and netting to keep kids safe, nabi peering into the closest tunnel. if she scrunched herself up real small, she'd probably fit... she thinks! "d'you think we'd get stuck in there now?" the older girl's giggling is contagious, nabi following along as she unveils a set of monkey bars that would've been the perfect height for her a decade and a half ago, as tall as the girl is now. a smug grin on nabi's face as she declares, "oh, but i could definitely take these on!"

there's a nostalgic delight with each new part of the playground they uncover, swing set that creaks when nabi tries to go higher than she ought to, a seesaw that wobbles a little too much even before they're able to try it. it'd be the perfect hideout—if sunset wasn't about to take it all down!

but nabi's attention is brought quickly to the tapping of zurie's nails, following her gaze to what has got to be a ball pit shaped tarp in front of them. "you found it! probably?" the unidentified square is wide enough that the width of the tarp spans more than either of them, nabi grabbing one edge of it and nodding her head towards the other for zurie, ready to reveal the piece de resistance of the sunset's playground extravaganza.

there seemed to be a rising trend in computer build requests and fixes. beom couldn't complain about a commission on the side, could he? if anything, it gave him more time and more time meant: boredom.

one of the greatest things about being apart of a team that runs a niche hobby is that there aren't many customers to tend to upfront. beom uses this opportunity to scan the security footage. dubbed 'sunset's anonymous' by kang nabi (a title he thinks is adorable coming from her), he never wants to let her down. she's been complaining about the sanrio claw machine for the last week or so and it would be a disservice to anyone if they were spending the same amount of money as her. a crime, really—especially knowing that he could do something to help it—worse than the offense of toggling xpixel's system without permission. at least that's what he tells himself when he dispatches the token dispenser in the back and sets a rule so that the claw machine could be more supportive nabi's goals. in around 7 more tries, the machine would hit it's minimum accrual and grant them another 30 seconds for gameplay. and assuming that nabi even understands morse code at all, beom flips off the power in the arcade machines around her. the closest machine to her line of sight flickers: --- -.- .- -.-- (okay), .-- .- .. - / ..-. --- .-. / -- (wait for me). the message is repeated three times. then with a whirl of clicks and general power, the machines all boot up again.

nabi's practically skipping her way to the arcade, her shift just over—and onto the next challenge! xpixel isn't too packed at this time of the day, a group of friends cheering by the ddr machine and some students playing hooky in their school uniforms, her special sanrio claw machine unoccupied. nabi enters with a purpose, running straight to the token machine to redeem her first count of tokens.

it's no sooner than the clink of the last token falling into her hand that everything turns off in xpixel, a clearly shocked yelp coming from behind the attendants' counter. the arcade machines light up with a whir of pixels, blinking lights flowing out and surrounding nabi like her personal lightshow, her in the very middle of it. there's a pattern to them that she doesn't know how to read, though it doesn't stop the grin from blooming across her face, running over to the closest one that had been flickering. the girl peers into the screen, curious, tapping twice on the glass. "see ya," she says to the street fighters onscreen, trusting that sunset's own will be listening out for her.

and in the meantime, she's off to conquer the week long boss that's been just out of her grasp. nabi rubs her hands together and clasps one of her tokens in between her palms, an offering to the claw machine gods above before she pays her dues. in the token goes, the start button glowing with neon luck that runs out right before the metal prongs wrap around her beloved prize. "no!" nabi groans and throws up her hands, kuromi falling back into the abyss of all the other stuffed toys. but she still has nine more tries, so—another token it is!

jinsik learns to drive the day he turns seventeen. a cold, winter's day in his father's corolla that's been with the family longer than he's been alive, his sister keeping watch by his side. he takes the first exit out the roundabout, remembers to indicate left like the good student he is. still, anyone who truly knows cha jinsik would know better, unalarmed when he veers off the beaten path onto a rocky trail, overlooking a vast coastline. he pulls to the side for a break, looks out the window, and smiles.

"i'll drive you around geoje someday," says fifteen year old jinsik to his then best friend, sworn to a pinky promise and crinkled smiles, twinkling stars and roaring ocean waves as their witness. it's one among many, but cha jinsik is a man of his word — words never empty, and especially not with her. eyes trace the path of a butterfly that flutters by, and he jumps at the sound of his sister's voice calling his name. with a steady hand, he pulls the gear shift back into position, right foot pressing down on the pedal, and drives away.

he'll turn twenty five in a few months now, and jinsik gets to fulfil that very promise ten years later. though not in its exact means — sunset galleria's sprawling corridors isn't the rolling green hills and pristine waters of geoje island, and neither does a security buggy compare to his family’s worn down car, old cassettes blasting on stereo. kang nabi sits next to him, also ten years older, still as lively and enchanting as he remembers.

laughter echoes through the stillness of an empty mall, intertwined with the soft hum of the buggy's engine. "hold tight, this baby’s faster than y’think," he warns, firm grip on the steering wheel. "is there anything you'd like to see first?"

nabi learns to dream long before she steps foot in geoje. colours paint the pads of her fingertips, kindergarten hands bright with potential, even if she doesn't know what's held in them yet. her parents had praised her for it, a masterpiece hung up on the family fridge for the week before she took the ferry to her grandparents'. she'd made sure the picture would stay up on the fridge with extra strong magnets borrowed from the next door neighbour, but nabi hadn't looked back for it on the day she left. and it was gone by the time she returned, fifteen with fingerpaint dreams still staining her palms and a smudge of blue for those of her best friend on her cheek.

the streetlamps outside the sunset galleria look like lights of their dock from afar, against the night sky shaded into the colour of high tide at midnight. mondays make for empty halls at this time, the stalls shuttered down and vibrant display windows dimming with the quiet of the mall. like a world of their own, the sketches of a future that she would've never considered impossible when she was younger. one that doesn't seem lost to time and the ferry's ride between geoje and busan, perhaps. cha jinsik laughs and it goes through her chest, sits where they belong on a security cart travelling through the terrain of familiarity and not.

nabi holds onto the frame of the buggy, eyes bright and warm as they look out into the expanse of the mall and back at her old friend. jinsik's uniform crumples against the apron she'd forgotten to keep for the day, artificial evening lights melting off his shoulders that brush along hers. "let's go as fast as we can, then," she says, free hand points straight ahead with a snappy finger gun. "and we'll stop wherever we end up!"

he's always wanted a pet. first, it was that he was too young. then, busy with new addition to family. then, not enough room. then, not enough money. now, the old grandma renting him his place would not hear a word of it; not even when he mentioned having a single fish in a tank. so, instead of having a friend to return to at the end of the long day, he's often found himself heading down to johwa. especially during when the store is doing their adoption days, little bird whispering against his ear.

he peeks through, head first, the smile which he carries upon his lips carrying itself to his eyes. for a second, at least. "whoa, nabi!" jaewon gasps; raising his hands as both protection and a sign of a quick surrender, though he's quick with his footing, and finds himself next to her within few steps. "wow. are they meant to be this small?" he's bent & looking at them, squinting as if he could see them better like this; they blend with the tank environment so well. "that's crazy. just how small is their brain? but, uh. i'm scared not of it obviously. don't start any rumours now; i'm just scared of holding it." he looks up to nabi now, eyes wide. "like, what if i hurt it? i'm not a pro, like you."

the donation drives at johwa's pet supplies usually do well, but those are the ones with furry, fluffy friends, not the adorable scalies that nabi loves to look after. but that doesn't mean her babies aren't wonderful, lovely pets—and of course, a great fit for someone looking for a fuss free little guy! the younger girl grins at her friend and his focused gaze, always the first to come running whenever the store's got a few animal friends around. "well... yeah, they're not gonna grow up super big either!" nabi shrugs and tilts her head over, eyes turning to crescents when she finds one of the hatchlings with its head raised as if listening in. "but they're sturdy!"

"so you're not gonna hurt them, don't worry," she assures him, smiling. "gotta just give 'em a lil' time! here, put a finger out into this cage." nabi demonstrates for the other, the barest, gentle nudge to one of the baby geckos nosing along the side of the glass tank. it perks up, head swiveling to bump against her finger before finding its way over to cling on the first joint of her index. she coos at it with a small hum, careful not to shake the little guy. "you can pet them like this! they're just hatched and extra tiny, so," she gives the softest air kiss to the small gecko chilling out on her finger. "we're letting them get used to us, y'know?"

leaving the sanctity of the gardens at midlight hotel never came that easily to jinam, something that was painstakingly obvious as he made his way though the crowded lobby of sunset galleria. the best he could do to hide his discomfort was to remain completely stoic, as people brushed by him far too invasively. he was on a mission however; a mission to save rabbits.

more specifically, the rabbits who often visited his garden for shelter from the weather, a little snack or just to enjoy the ecosystem jinam had worked hard to facilitate. unfortunately, the more rabbits that visited would only bring more of their natural predators around. he knew that prevention was the best solution for such a conundrum, and he suspected johwa pet supplies might have just what he was looking for.

once he'd finally ducked into the store, he began perusing the outermost shelves for his goal. he saw flea and tick medicine for pets and a ton of pet food, but nothing similar to what he was looking for. noting that an employee was tending the store, he decided to swallow his pride and approach her. "um, hi. i was wondering if you had any natural deterrents for foxes ? nothing that would hurt the little guys; maybe just a smell they don't like or ... hey ... wait a minute," jinam became completely distracted from 'operation rabbit season' the moment he started perceiving the employee's appearance. "have we met before ?" he asks, the sight conjuring up the image of sitting in mall jail after a shopping trip gone wrong the previous summer, months before he'd actually started working at sunset.

nabi's taking over for yulhee today at the front of johwa's products, out from behind their grooming station. it's a different world out here, but she's got a balancing array of odd jobs from her many summers at the mall, and working sales is just two flaps of a butterfly's wings to her! her smile is bright and cheerful with each customer, no different when their newest one approaches her with a question.

"oh, yeah! we've got fox repellent, and uh, chicken wire if you wanna build a fence to keep your animal friends safe," she rattles off, nodding her head. nabi pops out from behind the counter to show where to find the items to their new patron, passing by the guy and stopping when the sight of him stirs a memory from summer last. her eyes turn round and big, clearly remembering the call she'd once made... to the 911 of sunset galleria. she's channeling the best of nineties' scream queens when she points at him in surprise, gasp on her lips, "it's you!"

the ax murderer ( not-murderer )! and he's killing foxes this time!

well—he did ask for something that wouldn't hurt them, so maybe he's not all bad. her pointed finger withdraws sheepishly, nabi frowning the smallest amount. "we met, uh, i worked at jvyeon last summer..." she says, her drawl thickening as she gets flustered, admission coming clean from nabi in broken up pieces. "and! ah..." she's pretty sure the security told her that she'd gotten it wrong, though by that time she'd run back to nara's place, screaming down the way. and of course, the other guy was free from sunset jail by the time she returned to apologise. "if you remember anything happening then... that's me... yup." it's fine, she's owning up to her mistakes! nabi groans a little, embarrassed. "sorry about that..."

MOONLIGHT — flying to @bezeniths!

"wait, i'm sure it was here!" a busan lilt swings through the night, nabi's voice clear through it. sunset is crossing into dusk, patrons winding down with the day. the pet groomer's shift is long over, but there are still things to do in the mall, and a lovely friend to show around. nabi'd heard that the jungle gym hidden in a corner of sunset might finally be being replaced, what with renovations and exciting new shops—so what better time than now to find it again?

she'd come across it two summers past, but nabi hasn't been back ever since, and the last she'd heard of the playground was news of its impending demolition. it's tucked away in an alcove, really, so it's little wonder that few parents knew about this place, or why it got shut down so quickly after opening. the younger girl waves zurie over, pointing at the gate they'll have to hop over. "gimme a boost!"

plastic crinkles loudly as the younger girl pulls the tarp off with a magician's flourish, all aplomb and cheer. "tadah!" a sneeze through leftover dust, but the covering has done most of the job, the slide as clean as she remembers it. the bright yellow plastic's faded a little, but the moonlight turns it into an arc of soft daisy, childlike cheer held between plastic hinges. "i'm pretty sure there's a ball pit under one of these," nabi tells zurie, her eyes sparkling, "race you to find it!"

FUN & GAMES — flying to @scriptend!

there are laws to the universe. ones that say, grandmas make the best jeons, that the sun will break through like yellow yolk on sunday mornings, if a cat lets you pet them twice on the belly you're basically friends for life. and, there'll always be something about the senior in the broadcasting club whose voice gives you the giggles, or that knockoff kuromi dolls from the claw machine have to cost you a minimum of ten thousand won but it'll never go past thirty... right?

so nabi beckons over, waving at the closest security camera. "beom!" she doesn't know if he's actually looking over at the right screen, but sunset's own anonymous has eyes everywhere, she bets. plus, the screens along the fountain are scrolling across advertisements and onto youtube shorts, the clearest sign that beomsoo's up to some mischief.

she mimes the claw machine, her hand curling in and opening twice. she's going to get that kuromi doll today, and it's not going to cost her any more tokens! nabi mouths the words as loudly as she can, short of raising up a banner to the security cameras. her tiny figure on screen, waving at beomsoo, pointing towards xpixel. "let's go to the arcade, i'll meet you in five!"

HATCHLINGS — flying to @bbiwon!

nabi's hutch is open for business! or, well, johwa's brought in a small clutch of gecko hatchlings for adoption, and their favourite reptile handler is on the job, with a spray bottle and a careful eye out for any signs of a first shedding. the hatchlings are absolutely tiny, barely the size of her finger, each a lovely speckle of spots that belong to viper geckos. really, nabi loves her job, and these are the best type of days to work at johwa!

"here, hey, herehere!" she calls, waving a hand over to jaewon. nabi grins and greets him with a little mist over his head, tiny water droplets sparkling for a moment in the air before it settles. her hand comes up to shield her friend's face before the rest of him gets misted, palm open to catch the water like rain on a cool day. "someone put these babies up for adoption, look at them! they're still hatchlings and soooo tiny, dude, they haven't even had their first shed." nabi bends down, nodding to the small enclosures that hold a couple of the hatchlings each. "they just got misted, so, wanna play with them?"
