Okay maybe it's just me overinterpreting, but here's a scene in the last chapter of the book that gives me a little heart attack:

Grace considers saving humanity the thing that makes his whole life have meaning.

Now, come to think of it, was his life 'meaningless' before he became the savior of civilizations, or even before he is part of the project?

Definitely not. Aside from being an academic outcast, he was a school teacher. He loves his job and his students. It surely was meaningful, by common sense.

But the narrative does not allow him to live by common sense. He was chosen, put through trials, has his life taken away for a greater purpose. he will no longer live by the standard of a man, but by the standard of a hero. His mind will not be able to rest at ease before he fulfills his duty, and that's when he will be granted a 'meaning' once again.

And the meaning itself is the only reward for him being a hero.

The bitter undertone of the book's ending still haunts me constantly.😔
