This. I am so done with "You winning DnD by making DM cry/create more rules/swear". First, this is not the challenge you want. Second, DnD is not a versus and DM is not your enemy. They are a player with more responsibilities than you.

The reverse is very very true also. I know so many DMs/STs/GMs/Storyguides who get really excited about fucking up a player's plans, screwing up their day, etc. I've dealt with more than one that viewed killing PCs as an accomplishment.

It's not. That's gross. This is a collaborative playtime, and getting excited about killing a PC against the wishes of the player and over the player's objections or without the player's knowledge is like thinking you are good at basketball because you brought a knife on the court and cut the ball in half. Not only did you not win, but you're a dick and you ruined it.

I think a lot of this gets resolved if everyone remembers that THE GM IS A PLAYER TOO. That means when you're setting up your lists of Lines & Veils, the ST puts subjects he doesn't want to deal with on the list also. When you're discussing theme for the chronicle in Session Zero, the DM weighs in, too. It means the Storyguide can use the X Card and step away if a topic upsets her or a scene gets too upset with xir.

And it means that if you'd be considered a dick player if you did a particular thing to another player, you're a dick if you do that to the ST.

Yeah, and it's annoying for players when DMs treat their PCs like their baby sister's toys that they want to spitefully break, or changes the facts on the ground when the players are "too clever."

I'm not here for "players do this" that doesn't acknowledge that the DM is just another player, they're just the one that is playing The Setting.

A good DM/player relationship is one where both parties are having fun and trust each other, and that looks different for every group. I do like to occasionally catch my DM off guard and outthink him, but only if he's also on the same page as me and loves it too, which hes said many times he does. And he's outplayed us too, and we love it. It's all about the give and take and respecting each other's boundaries, and all working together to make a good experience for the group.

DM or player, if you're playing because you resent someone at the table and are actively trying to make the game less enjoyable for them, you need to stop that game because that's not fair or healthy. This isn't a video game; there is no main character, DM or player, and everyone deserves to have fun, or why spend this much time and money on it?

I had a long argument about this a few weeks ago.

The thing is, as I realized while talking through it: the entire science of economics uses language that frames it this way. We talk about prices going up in response to low supply or high demand as though it's a thing that happens spontaneously, on its own, like water evaporating in response to heat -- as opposed to what actually happens, which is that people who sell things make decisions to raise prices.

Frequently those decisions are solidly predictable, and are necessary (or perceived as such) in order to stay in business, but that doesn't make them any less conscious, active decisions. And so on for rents, wages, hirings/firings and the like.

These things do not change on their own without human intervention. People decide what they are going to be, and when they change, it's because people have decided to change them.
