You say you will but will you?
You say you will but will you?
âIâll do that tomorrowâ, âIâm going to do that next weekâ, âOh yes Iâll get round to that soonâ, âIâll call you next weekâ, âIâll have that report to you by Wednesday Mr Smithâ.
At the same time your little voice is slapping you on the forehead with a wet gurnard saying âNo you wonât!â Why is that? Well, in short, your internal world and external world are in conflict. There. Easy. Well actuallyâŚ

Coach:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Right Ian how did you get on this week with those tasks which you said the end of our session were important in moving towards your goals. What did you learn?

Eliciting Values
I have been asked recently to run a series of workshops for 65 staff on values. This is stuff I love. Why?
because if we are not living and doing stuff that we really value, what is the meaning in there for living a fulfilling existence?
But what actually are values? Well, there are many definitions out there. I like this one:
Your personal ideas about what is important and not important, what isâŚ

When the going gets tough (because it will)...From NZBusiness / Management Magazine, May 2016
When the going gets tough (because it will)âŚFrom NZBusiness / Management Magazine, May 2016
When the Going Gets Tough. What a song. 1986. OâLevels for me in UK along with âfirst loveâ (aahh). That man Billy Ocean. Remember him? Didnât he have it going on at this time? Here is a lyrical excerpt:
I got something to tell you I got something to say Iâm gonna put this dream in motion Never let nothing stand in my way When the going gets touch The tough get going
What do you take from this?âŚ

Most people make zero changes after reading books. Why?
Most people make zero changes after reading books. Why?
Interesting eh.
Yeah Iâm reading this personal development book at the moment..
Sound familiar?
Your balloon and needle
I view making changes in your life as a needle inside a balloon. The balloon is your world and is fully inflated. Could be any colour, doesnât matter. The wall of the balloon is the meniscus of your comfort zone. Trick is, for change, you need to puncture that wall, throughâŚ

A brief bus tour of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
A brief bus tour of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
So on Easter Sunday I held my NLP practitioners Certificate aloft care of the remarkable Dr Richard Bolstad. Yay.
Eighteen days in a room with fellow compatriots, assistants, and the steady hand of Richard at the helm.
150 hrs of interactive training.
Wowee.
Whatâs it all about?
Well..in a nutshell:
If sh@t works, keep doing it

âHi itâs Chris here, please donât leave me a voice message..â
Why would I do that? (I donât by the way).
But some people do.
Some people I know.
A tradesman I called today said âDonât leave me a voice message as I am hopeless at checking my voice messagesâ. Admirable and earnest-honest on one level but does that build trust?
Whoâs agenda is this?

E mail: what sucks and what doesn't
E mail: what sucks and what doesnât
E mail eh.
Great.
Lets get the sucks out of the way
Much of the time Iâm not a great fan of our E mail friend. Hereâs why:
it is a functional, written word medium
it is a zero energy medium
it is a zero empathy medium
you cannot learn anything about the other person(s) or recipients in the medium
you risk upsetting the other person from time to time. You cannot reason in and through the medium.

It's a numbers game, just like popcorn..
Itâs a numbers game, just like popcorn..
Business is about numbers.
Not the P&L. Well, not chiefly.
The numbers are those who buy.
At some stage.
I see a new business, for example, like a big pan of popcorn. You fill the pan with kernels, then add a little heat. The heat is your sincere, value added touches to your qualified prospects.
Then you add a little more heat.
And a bit more.
And a bit more.
Then..
POP!
Someone buys. Hooray!

Whistle stop habits guide
Whistle stop habits guide
Habits?
We are all our habits. You know that, donât you?
But prey how to change?
Mm..
Well, Iâve been in this space a while now, this is my take, in a short black kind of way:
Be brutally honest
With yourself, with your lifestyle choices, even with the folk you hang around with. Most people know what to do but they are not doing it, they kid themselves. It is very easy to do this. Some areâŚ

Your business is like mountain biking..Part II
Your business is like mountain biking..Part II
A year or so I wrote a blog about mountain biking and the parallels with your business. Search it out if you like.
Last weekend the ride that prompted this blog, the St James Walkway (near Hanmer Springs) I did again. But this time something was different.
It was harder.
Much harder.
Why?
Well, without going down excuse alley, I hadnât put in âthe hard yardsâ. Yes, the training. A mate of mine,âŚ

That âbusy questionâ. Comes up so much today it is worth a capital B: Busy.
Mm..

Deep irony
There is what I would call a deep-seated societal irony at play here, at least here in NZ. It lurks and lurches around but it is here, no doubt (to my way of thinking anyway) and most of the time it is a covert little animal. Bit of a weasel in truth, sneaky.
Itâs effects are varied onâŚ

Oh dear..my golf habit
Played golf today with a mate.
Started well in long trousers and no cap in searing heat, oops, prep 4/10. Had my water bottle though so all was not lost. 4 1/2 / 10.
Anyhow like anything else in life including hitting the little white one, to increase your level of performance (in this case carding low scores) your game needs to become (more) habitual. Remember habits are what you consistentlyâŚ
