The Thing (1982)
Writing a British Character
whilst avoiding stereotypes.
I am a British (to be specific English) person. I am sick of seeing badly written British characters so I’m going to help you out.
Regions
Within the UK we then have England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. What you might not realise is that in each of these countries dialogue, traditions and slang can be vastly different.
I’ve seen posts going around with British slang words but it’s practically useless to you if you don’t know which areas say these words. I’m from Yorkshire which is classed as having a ‘broad’ accent. We have words such as 'mardy’ 'Ey up’ 'Nah then’ 'innit’ 'Gennel’. But people from other areas have no idea what I’m saying and don’t understand the slang because it is so region specific. Oh and what causes major arguments with my university friends is whether bread is 'Bread Cakes’ 'Bread rolls’ or 'Bread buns’.
So know the area and the slang.
Geography!!!
There are more places in the UK than London. So think about it and do some research before you decide where you want your character to be from, do something different and have them from 'up north’.

Accents
Although I touched on this in the region section I think this is really important. We don’t all talk like the bleedin’ Queen. When I was a child this was the most annoying thing about children’s tv shows. Not only was the British character always the bad guy they always had a badly done posh accent and sat around drinking tea.
So watch some videos, you don’t need to write in the accent but it will help you to familiarise yourself with the way people from that area speak.
Stereotypes
These have a warning light above. Avoid at all costs. That snotty upper-class English person with a large chin? AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I understand how easy it is to fall into stereotypes, but avoid them if you can. It will affect how good your end product is.
How we identify
I am a British person, but if someone was to ask me where I was from I would say English. Keep this mind when writing I don’t know many people who would introduce themselves and say 'Oh I’m from Britain.’ We just don’t. All though we are one country- the UK. We all identify with the country we are born in. Most people are very proud and independent especially the Scottish and Welsh. They will normally identify with 'Wales/Scotland/England/N.Ireland before they identify as British or from the UK.
So please keep this is mind!
Our own Stereotypes
Within the UK we don’t always get on and there is a lot of rivalry between parts of the UK. So for example the English call the Welsh 'Sheep shaggers’ which is just a joke.
The South and North of England are hugely different places with people 'darnnnn south’ thinking people from the north are all farmers and then the people from 'Up Norff’ thinking those in the south are all posh. Off course it’s all nonsense, and we know it is. But we still say it!
A person first
You’ve decided to make a character British, great! But you should do your character development for this character the exact same as you would do any other character. The fact they are British doesn’t affect what their positive and negative traits are going to be. What effects these is their personality, background. Not where in the world they are from.
You’ve got a character in your novel that is British, not a British character.
Think of it that way and your character will be better off.
Research
What this all comes down to, in the end is RESEARCH.
These links might give you an idea where to start, you will of course need to do further research
When writing as if British and when writing a British character
How to write dialogue for British characters with an accent
Regions of Britain
Sounds familiar? Accent and Dialects in the UK
Regional accents of English
Writing British characters
The North/South divide
The best kind of research is to ASK someone. I’m from England and if you want to ask me any questions I will do my best to help, bear in mind though I can only tell you about where I’m from which is Yorkshire.
Hope this has been of help, I had a right laugh making this as I asked my Dad for help and he sat by me and randomly said slang words. (hence the slang post that I’m making)
If you can think of anything I have missed let me know and I’ll add it in. I haven’t included everything you need to think about but hopefully it will just help you get started.

EDIT: Another thing to keep in mind is that Wales especially has it’s own language and while not everyone from Wales speaks welsh in certain areas they do. So make sure you find out whether or not the area your character is from is likely to speak another language.
Blinkie Tutorial
Templates you'll need:
First step, open IbisPaint and import the pink blinkie base. This is just to keep the aspect ratio the same, so don't worry about preserving the pink blinkie after you import it.
For this tutorial, I'll be making a CFS blinkie with this flag as the background. You can use any color or background. If you're using a horizontal striped flag like I am, be sure to select perspective form so it will automatically resize, and then you can stretch it to fit the blinkie.
Now that your background is done, you can add text, decoration, etc!
Now it's time to add the actual blinkie part. Insert the black and white template on a new layer right on top of the background. It should fit perfectly.
If you want to keep it black and white, ignore this next step. Here I will show you how to color the dots easily. I'll be picking purple and blue for my dots.
Make two layers above the blinkie part and set them both to clipping layers. One will be for recoloring your white dots, the other for you black dots.
Color one of the layers entirely with your first color, then set it to "Lighter Color". This will color only your black dots.
Do the same with your other color on the other layer, and then set it to "Darker Color". This will color only your white dots.
Boom! Now you've got your first frame!
To get your 2nd frame, simply click the invert button on the blinkie frame.
Now you've got both your frames!
Now just pop these frames into EzGif's Gif Maker (or any other gif maker), and you're done!
Congrats! You've made a blinkie!
Oceanarium Date! 🐠🪸
Winston and Jay go on a romantic date out after a long tiring day at the office, what could go wrong.
Anyways winston is literally a cat, he can adapt his vision and see in the dark! (That's why his eyes are like that)
Coloring/Shading practice!
I haven't posted here for a long time, my bad. So take this doodle of Wins as a practice.
hi gang. so someone in the wrong organ discord server ripped all the Mouthwashing models into vrchat, and after some community digging, we found the best refs possible for them!
credits to brokenvideotape on discord for posting the originals. im simply putting them online in order for people to have the best refs possible! :-)
This was a big need, thank you.
Winston's outfits!
Decided to sketch out some outfit ideas for him, since well he can't just always use the same office clothing :P
Anyways due to the region he lives in, it tends to be quite cold so he uses warmer clothing even if he doesn't really feel cold at all!
There's also a lake/river nearby so when he has time and really feels like it, he goes fishing!
The Price of Flesh Walkthrough: [Celia] ; [Mason] ; [Derek] ; [Fox]
I just want to start with saying that this is how I, myself, got these endings. I’m sure there are other ways to get them, so don’t worry if our play throughs were different! feel free to send me a message if you're struggling!
Marked spoilers for…obvious reasons

I generally watch LPs of horror games bc I'm too anxious to actually play them but a lot of them have FANTASTIC stories, so sometimes I just binge-watch KrinxTV for background noise. Been watching a lot of playthroughs of Still Wakes The Deep because it's such a delight to hear Scottish voice actors get work and I thought I'd address some questions I keep seeing Let's Players ask:
--Adair is a member of the National Front as you can find out from posters in his cabin, a Neo-Fascist British political party that’s been going since the sixties. While it often preaches British ethnic unity, in practice that often means “everybody in the UK should be exactly like East End Londerners” and features plentiful disdain for Scottish, Irish, and Welsh folk, alongside those perceived as “not British”. No wonder the wanker eats alone in the canteen.
--Neeps and Tatties=turnips and potatoes, mashed, drenched in butter or sauce. Fills your belly, keeps you warm, probably makes you sink like a stone because it’s so heavy.
--Cranachan=a dessert made of raspberries, honey, cream and oats, absolutely delicious
--Rennick calls Caz a “wee ned prick”. Ned is apocryphally said to stand for “non-educated delinquent” and is basically just a way of calling someone an uneducated, lower-class criminal
--A lot of things said by and about Roy indicate that he’s a teetotaller who went through AA and specifically became Catholic and is making an effort at converting Caz.
--I think it’s entertaining how Scottish nicknames often follow a pattern of shortening/rejiggering that I also see a lot with Australian nicknames—Cameron becomes Caz, Rafferty becomes Raffs, etc. Trots is an unusual one but is almost certainly a reference to him being a communist, presumably a Trotskyist. Gibbo is also an unusual one in that it’s just very silly. There’s a kind of indignity implied in being killed by a guy called Gibbo.
--A few times on the radio you hear the Shipping Forecast, a type of weather report aimed at specifically reporting weather conditions out on the ocean, and is also famous for the report being read in such a calm, soothing tone that some folk use it as a sleep aid.
--All the yellow paint for interactable things is very video gamey, yes, but is also in line with old British health and safety standards, and yellow paint on things like emergency ladders or on the edges of stairs that are trip hazards is a thing ou can still see in some older buildings.
--Caz keeps saying he’s “good with the leccy”; leccy=electricity. Caz is implied to be quite a wee guy who can get through a lot of tight spaces, and my uncle swears blind that electricians used to refuse to take on apprentices over a certain size because they only wanted to train wee guys who could get up into the tight spaces that a lot of older buildings are full of. On that note, “wee man” is a term of endearment, generally, and isn’t exclusively applied to short guys.
--Finlay saying of Gibbo that “he’s no right” is INCREDIBLY OMINOUS. It sounds mild but “he’s no right, that boy” is what older folk say about a child who’s been found disembowelling cats for fun or someone they strongly suspect is a pedophile. It’s not something you’d say about a friend who’s just acting a bit unusually.
– “Great minds united over a Buckie”--Buckfast, or Buckie, is a caffienated tonic wine that’s cheap, widely accessible, and is a bit like rocket fuel for bad decisions.
– “Ya roaster” tbh I don’t really know where it comes from, calling someone a roaster, but I’ve always felt like it has a vibe of telling them they’re huffing their own farts.
--Scunnert/scunnered--buggered, screwed, utterly fucked, etc
– “You’re the jammiest bastart on this rig” Someone who is jammy is someone who has incredible luck that is implied to be related to their sheer confidence or willingness to engage in risky behaviour. Walking along the street and finding a pound coin isn’t jammy; crossing the road confident that the cars won’t hit you and stopping in the middle to pick up a pound coin before making it unscathed to the other side is jammy as all hell.
--Barlinnie is the biggest prison in Scotland, and largely hosts violent offenders—it’s where Caz would definitely go for hospitalizing a man.
--Weans are children (contraction of wee yins/wee ones). I thought this one was contextually obvious but apparently not.
