Night Shift - Suna Rintaro x Reader
in which you fall for your mysterious and gorgeous neighbor next door.
You didnât think much of it, I mean, these meetings were just late-night rendezvous that became a habit for you, not because of him, of course. It had nothing to do with Rinâat least thatâs what you kept telling yourself. He was there for you, though, offering an escape from the real world in the form of snacks and late-night talks. It just felt nice to talk to someone who didnât know anything about you other than the fact that you live next door and are a great conversationalist. You didnât even mean to start whatever this was between you two, and definitely didnât intend for it to stay in your mind like a craving, but you know you canât imagine pulling away. Not that you even want to.
âAre you paying attention?â your desk mate says, disrupting your cloudy thoughts and bringing you back into the classroom. Rightâ you were in chemistry, not up on the roof with Rin. You were supposed to be listening to your teacherâs lecture, but instead, you were overthinking your nightly meetings with your neighbor, Rin. It wasnât usual for you to be so stressed over something like this, but you had realized that you didnât actually know anything about himâ at least not at the rate he knew about you. You usually were the one who talked, leaving him to listen and give little âmhmâsâ of acknowledgement. He rarely spoke about himself or his personal life, and you figured he just was more of a listener than a talker, or that he was too tired to lead the conversation; the meetings were late at night.
âYeah, sorry,â you sighed, leaning back in your chair and taking a breath before focusing on the teacher, even if your mind wanted so desperately to wander back to him.
The day became a muddy haze that dragged on, with student council meetings, classes, and other clubs. You were quite popular at school due to your bubbly nature and how easy people found it to talk to you. Even though it became a hassle since everyone began to use you as a therapist. Every day, like clockwork, someone would come to you with problems, and youâd give the best advice you could, trying to ignore the way all these negative drama-filled issuesâwhich had nothing to do with youâ began to harbor in your mind. At first, you had been happy to help, but it became overbearing. You started to feel like people would rather come to you to vent rather than come to you because they want to talk to you.
Of course, you still had your friends who didnât use you constantly for advice, but you canât count how many times people come to you in public settings asking to talk privately. It began to make you wonder if you were worth anything to these people other than someone sweet who would listen to them rant. What about you?
Thatâs why your nights with Rin became so special. He didnât ask you for anything; he just let you rant for a change. However, after nearly a month of talking about yourself, you had started to wonder about him, too. You had been so caught up in yourself that you didnât even think about how little you knew about him. Youâd made a list of what you know about him: he's your age, maybe a few months younger, tall (even though heâs sitting most of the time), and that he doesnât care much for school, but heâs in the student council like you are. Which isnât a lot, so you decided to ask him more about himself tonight.
âThinking hard?â you heard a voice say. You looked over to see Rin climbing up onto your roof, carrying what appeared to be a bag from a convenience store. You hadnât been waiting on your roof for long, since you had some sort of mutual agreement to come outside by 11:30 pm to see each other.
You give him a knowing smile as he sits down, emptying the contents of the bag onto the rooftop. âDo you want me to be honest?â you ask, grabbing one of the banana milksâthat you know he specifically got for youâ and poking your straw through it. He shrugs, âYeah, always,â he says, setting a pillow in his lap and motioning for you to lie down in it. You take his offer, figuring the comfort might help you ease up and ask him what you actually want to know.
His expression was nonchalant as you lay your head into his lap, but you could tell he was curious as to what got you thinking so hard.
âI rant about myself so much that I realized I havenât left much room to talk about you,â you say with a small pout on your face. He looked down at you, and you could feel his eyes studying you even if you were looking away at the bright stars that covered the midnight sky. âWhat do you want to know?â he whispered, his hand slowly coming up to brush a few strands of your hair behind your ear. âI wouldnât say Iâm all that interesting.â
You let out a small laugh, âIâd say otherwise,â and his hand continues to run through your hair, âI mean, you have me interested and I barely know anything about you.â
âYou didnât finish your banana milk, I got that for you, you know,â he says, an attempt to deflect the conversation away from himself. Your eyebrows crease in disdain as you turn your eyes towards him, âIâm not talking about that stuff, Rin,â you mutter, âIâm talking about you.â
He sighs, seemingly in defeat. He hesitates to speak, but eventually whispers to you, âMy name is Rintaro Suna.â
âRintaro, huh?â you smile, happy to even be getting an inkling about him at all. He nods with a shrug, âYeah, I let you call me Rin. Most people just call me Suna or very rarely Sunarin.â He tilted his head back to look up at the sky, worried about making eye contact with you since he knew the conversation was going to get deeper. He then gave a slight shrug, as if thinking about whether he should continue with the conversation or attempt to divert the attention. "What else do you want to know?" he asked, his voice more thoughtful and meaningful than you were used to hearing from him.
You hesitated for a moment, trying to choose a question that wouldnât make him feel cornered, but would give you a glimpse into the side of him that he kept hiddenâ or mostly one you have been too blind to ask about. Finally, you asked, "Youâve never really talked about your family. Whatâs that like for you?"
Rin seemed to mull over the question, his eyes still on the sky, before he finally spoke up. "Familyâs complicated," he said slowly, mostly in a whisper as if he was still reluctant to get further into it. "We donât talk much, but itâs not like I care either,â he says, his hand now tracing circles on your shoulder in an attempt to level himself. âItâs just the way things are. You get used to it."
You nodded, not wanting to push him too far and cause him to get further from your grasp when youâre making so much progress. âSounds lonely to me,â you mumble, subconsciously rubbing his thigh with a pout. âI guess, but Iâm used to it,â he shrugs, âand I have you to keep me company all night anyway.
You hummed in acknowledgement, trying to ignore the way that made your chest swell. The silence stretched for a moment, with both of you lost in your thoughts. Despite only knowing just a little bit about his personal life now, you felt like you had learned something new, a small piece of the puzzle that was the man you spent nearly every night with for the past month. You knew he wasnât easy to read, but his presence was like your sanctuary. You were allowed to actually be yourself with him, and it made him your safe place. You wanted so desperately to be that for him, too.
You poked his thigh, "What else?" you asked. "Tell me something about you that no one else knows. Iâm good at keeping secrets,â you say with a cheeky smile.
Rin bit his lip softly, considering the question before he allowed a small smirk to tug at the corner of his mouth. "I like Instagram reels," he teased, the playful tone insinuating he was again trying to deflect from talking about anything too personal.
You rolled your eyes, though a small smile tugged at your lips. "Something more interesting, Rin."
His slender fingers stopped their ministrations on your shoulder, âI play volleyball,â he said, and you quirked a brow at him. âThatâs it?â and he blinked slowly at you, âThat's it, yeah.â
You let out a groan, âOh my gosh, you're impossible to get information out of.â You turn towards him in his lap, âTreat it like a resume, you need to be more specific so that Iâll actually learn stuff about you. âCensor that, Iâm scared of jobs,â he says, his expression blank, but you know it's an attempt at a playful retort. You deadpan him, causing him to sigh. âIâm a middle blocker and a starter.â
You giggle, âBetter.â
There was more silence, but it felt comfortable than anything. âWhat if I fall asleep here, Rin?â you whispered, feeling your eyes get heavy. âIâll carry you inside,â he whispers back, causing you to giggle. âYeah? Can you carry me?â and he snorts, âIâm stronger than I look under these baggy clothes.â
âProof or it didn't happen,â you mumble, and he laughs slightly, âmaybe if you earn it,â he says. âJust you wait,â you mumble, your eyes feeling heavy as he runs his hand down the curve of your waist.
The morning glow came in through the blinds, causing you to wake you up. You squinted at the brightness before you realized he really had carried you back to your room like he said he would. You turn over, burying your face into your pillow with muffled whines as you try to remember every moment of last night before the deep reality of the rest of the world sinks in. Your phone buzzes, snapping you out of your thoughts of Rin and the way he made you feel.
You mumbled curses about whoever was texting you so early on a weekend, before your eyes registered the name. âRin..?â you questioned, sitting up in surprise before you read the message. âHey, lock your window. I couldnât lock it from the outside.â
You feel your face flush as you realize he definitely did carry you into bed, and even tucked you in with the way the blanket was completely covering you. You pouted slightly, though, wishing you couldâve stayed up with him longer. You moved out of bed to lock the window before texting him back. âI see you put your number in my phone,â You replied, and you got a text back almost immediately. âYeah, figured itâd be easier for me to talk about myself if I could hide behind my screen while I do it.â He admitted.
You bit your lipâon one hand, you wanted to know more about him, but you also wanted to hear it come from his lip. âI donât want to rush you, I just want to know you more.â You text back before deciding to take a risk. âLetâs take a break from it for now. If you're free, let's go get breakfast. Iâll drive.â
Your heart pounded as you awaited a reply, and it came much slower than the one before it.
After what felt like forever, the three dots on iMessage popped up, indicating that he was typing a response to your proposition. You held your breath as the message appeared, with another one shortly after that.
"Breakfast sounds good. Iâm free in about an hour.â and âYou sure you want to drive? I could if you want to be a passenger princess or whatever they are called.â
You let out a sigh of relief, the tension in your body slowly melting away as he was very clearly interested in seeing you. Rin had not only agreed, but even offered to pick you up. A small smile tugged at the corners of your mouth, though you couldnât help but feel a little flustered at the idea of him coming to your place so casually. This was the first time youâd be seeing each other at a normal time of day.
You wanted to wait a minute to respond, trying to keep yourself from being, "No, I need gas anyway, so be ready in an hour."
He didnât text back immediately, probably getting read for the dayâbut the thought of seeing him today in different wear than his usually baggy sweatpants that you assumed were his pajamas, had your heart full of excitement.
Did you like him? You had been spending so much time together, and with the way you two touch each other, it's easy to confuse your relationship as more than it is. The nights you have been spending together meant more to you than any current friendships you have, because heâs just so raw and genuine with you. He listens to you, and he cuddles you while you talk. The idea of him seeing you when you werenât buried in blankets or half asleep was nerve-wracking, but exciting all the same.
You shook those thoughts away, fixing your hair and choosing an outfit to wear to get breakfast.
An hour later, just as you finished gathering your bag, you heard a knock at your door. Your heart skipped a beat as you realized you were really going to see him, despite knowing you were in his lap just last night. You quickly went downstairs and made your way to the door, opening it to find Rin standing there with his usual nonchalant air, dressed in a black hoodie and light-washed jeans, whispering a greeting to you. His eyes flicked to yours as he stood there with his hands shoved in his pockets, his lips curling into a small smile at your nervous gaze.
âThought we agreed Iâd pick you up?â you inquired, stepping aside to let him in with a little pout in your tone.
He shrugged, looking around your living room as if to take in the details about you that you probably already talked to him about. âIâm next door, and Iâd rather get out of my house if I can.â
You raised an eyebrow at his choice of words, feeling a pang at the inclination of them, but didnât press him on it. âOkay, letâs go.â
You two talked about basic stuff like your day yesterdayâ anything that didn't make it into last night's conversationâ but didnât talk a lot about him personally. There was a comfortable silence in between words, but it wasnât necessarily the kind you were used to with himâthis felt different, like there was some elephant in the room, one that was pressed up between you two that neither of you was willing to talk about. âI wonder about you,â you whisper once it seemed to get too quiet.
He turned towards you, âAbout my life?â he questioned, earning a nod from you. âThereâs not much left to say. My parents work a lot and leave me to my own devices most of the time. They donât care much about me, and Iâve had to learn how to do the same with them.â He said, punctuating his words with a sigh. You frown at the knowledge, parking the car at the gas station. Your hand reaches his, rubbing it with your thumb. âIâm sorry. You deserve someone who makes you feel wanted.â You whisper, trying your best not to invade his feelings, but attempt to reassure him.
âYou do,â he mutters, his hand moving to tighten around yours. âI feel like a stage 4 clinger. I want to stay with you all the time because you care so much, and I care so much about you too,â he admits, every word causing your heart rate to increase. âRinâŠâ you mumbled, grabbing his jaw gently and turning it towards you.
Your eyes locked, and it was the first time you realized that he wasnât closed off to you the way you had initially thought. Rin had always expressed himself to you in his eyes, with the way he gazed at youâ allowing his eyes to tell you more about his emotions than he could express in words. The reason he hadnât talked about his personal life was that his family was so absent that there genuinely wasnât much to say. Heâd rather hear you talk about yourself, because the fact that you even WANTED to speak to him made him feel more important than anyone else.
With this realization, you kissed him. His hands moved to wrap around the nape of your neck, steadying the kiss. âYouâre bold,â he whispered when you two broke apart. âNot really, I just figured youâd respond well to it. It felt like the right thing to do,â you mumbled, brushing your delicate finger over his plump bottom lip.
Rin couldnât help his lips from curving into that lazy smirk of his, but this time it wasnât to deflect his true feelingsâit was truthful, and almost shy. His hand moved up from your neck to your jaw, his thumb grazing it as if he was committing the moment to memory. âDefinitely the right thing to do,â he murmured, his voice low and his eyes telling you how special these moments with you were to him.
You swallowed, looking back at him as the weight of what just happened settled over you. You kissed him, and the tension inside the car felt stronger now, humming with an energy that was both thrilling and terrifying.
âWhat does this mean for us?â you asked him, hating how small your voice sounded.
Rin leaned back in his seat, his hands letting go of you and his head leaning against the headrest, but his eyes traced over your features like he was still trying to burn all your features into his memory. âFor us? Not sure,â he shrugged, âBut for me? It means Iâm screwed,â he said with a groan, though the faint tug of a smile at the corner of his lips betrayed the seriousness of his words.
You pouted, nudging his shoulder with your hand. âWhy do you always make everything sound so negative?â
He sighed, shaking his head. âBecause if I tell you how I really feel, I might scare you off.â
Your chest tightened at that, but you tried so desperately to keep it light. âTry me.â
He shakes his head at you, clearly too reluctant to truly say the truth. âGo get gas,â he says, nudging you back. âI'm hungry, and youâre taking forever,â he says, and you roll your eyes, lacking any bite in them, though.
âFine, fine,â you say, getting out and pumping gas, âwhose the passenger princess now?â you giggle. After finishing, you got back into the car and started it, driving to a diner nearby that you thought would be casual enough for breakfast.
The silence that followed was slightly heavy, but not necessarily uncomfortable; it was more like both of you were preparing for something bigger than late-night banter or banana milk on rooftops. Rin shifted slightly in his seat, scooting a bit closer to your side of the car, sliding his hand over to your hand thatâs resting near the center console.
âI like you,â he said simply. No hesitation. No playful deflection. His words cut through the noise in your head with startling clarity. He meant what he said, and you could tell from the way he was looking at you with a gaze of vulnerability.
âAre you serious?â you asked, despite knowing he was being honest. Still, you blinked slowly in surprise, your lips parting slightly as if you werenât sure you heard him right. âYou like me?â
âYeah,â he repeated, this time firmer, his eyes boring into yours, clearly nervous as he awaited a response.. âMore than I should, probably. Thatâs why I was so hesitant to speak. I was worried that if I let myself, I wouldâve told you everything about how I was beginning to feel about you, and it scared me. I also knew that then I wouldnât be able to stop.â He sighed before mumbling quietly, âWhat would I have done if you pushed me away after?â
Your heart thudded wildly in your chest, and every beat seemed to echo in your ears. It was everything you wanted to hear and yet nearly everything you were terrified to admit at the same time.
You laughed nervously, trying to shake off the rush of adrenaline surging through your veins that had your heart pumping like crazy. âYou meanâŠall those nights, you actually enjoyed sitting there listening to me ramble about my stupid day?â
âNot stupid,â he interrupted, a faint crease forming between his furrowed brows. âI liked it. It was nice having you trust me like that.â His hand finally moved, intertwining his fingers with yours. âI donât think you realize what you mean to me yet. Especially how special you make me feelâ
Your breath caught in your throat, and you swore he could hear you gulp. The way he said it was like it was inevitable, like the universe had conspired to place you next door to him. As if some alchemy tied your being to his, whatever it was, it made your chest throb in the best possible way.
âThen show me,â you whispered, giving his hand a gentle squeeze of reassurance, âShow me how you feel.â
He raised a brow. âWhat, here? In the car?â
You smacked his shoulder, laughing despite the heat you could feel rushing towards your cheeks. âThatâs not what I meant, Rin.â
He smirked, but his eyes softened. âI know.â He tugged your hand closer, brushing his lips over your knuckles, a gesture so gentle yet intimate it made your stomach flip. âBreakfast first. Then⊠Iâll show you.â
For the first time in weeks, maybe months, you didnât feel like you were carrying the weight of everyone elseâs problems. For once, you felt wantedâfor no reason other than being you.
And it terrified you just as much as it thrilled you.
âYeah, Iâd like that. Take me on a date and then deflower me or whatever,â and he snorts, âI am not deflowing you before I ask you to be my girlfriend.â
You know itâs probably the bare minimum for him to care about your relationship more than anything physical, but it still warmed your heart to know his intentions. âIâll wait then, we have one million things to talk about before we get to that point,â you smileâ a true, genuine smile.
âYou are special, Rin, more special to me than anything else I have going on in life,â you say, bringing his hand towards your cheek, even though your eyes were focused on the road. âI know, youâve made it clear,â he whispers, âone of the reasons I like you so much.â
You had finally had something meaningful, something personal to you. This was your Rin, and he knew it, too. In the same way, you were his, like a prized possession he had to himself. You both promised to still have your late-night meet-ups, but they werenât strict to the roof anymore; they began to be in each other's rooms, your limbs lazily tangled between each other while watching reruns of TV shows you two could binge.
You had someone who truly cared for you as you were, and not for what you could provide for him, and someone who would hold you every night with small kisses on your neck and forehead.
It was truly all you could ask for.
