happy pride month everybody!! thought i'd compile some ways to celebrate that actually help queer people đ
- donate to mutual aid campaigns for queer folks in need. even $1 helps. healthcare funds, emergency housing, gas money, grocery costs, legal fees, etc. canât donate? share those posts so someone who can donate will see them.
- support queer-owned and queer-run businesses. restaurants, bars, bakeris, etsy shops, etc. not sure whatâs around you? google it, search on your town's reddit/facebook/etc, or download the "everywhere Is queer app"!
- visibly show youâre a safe person (if itâs safe to do so). wear a small pride flag, pronoun pin, rainbow lanyard, safety pin, etc. tiny signals can make a huge difference for someone trying to figure out if theyâre safe around you. i still remember the joy i'd feel as a young queer kid seeing an adult with some sort of pride accessory.
- respect peopleâs pronouns! this includes neo pronouns! ask and use what someone tells you, and if they prefer multiple pronouns, try not to just use the one that is the most comfortable for you. take the time to check what pronouns someone prefers instead of just automatically "they"-ing everyone who looks vaguely queer.
- educate yourself so queer people donât always have to. take a little time to read about identities, history, and terminology. learn about stonewall, the riots, the people (who were predominantly trans women of color, gnc folks, and lesbians) who fought to get us where we are today! learn about different forms of systemic oppression: individual, historical, institutional, and structural. learn about intersectionality!
- volunteer your time. help at lgbtq+ centers, hotlines, shelters, community fridges, etc.
- check in on the queer people you know. pride can be fun, but it can also be heavy. not everyone is able to celebrate safely. in a world with so many horrible people wanting queer people silent, isolated, or dead, a quick check in can go a long way. take care of yourself, as well.
remember: pride is not just a celebration. itâs a protest. do what you can with the resources you have. money, time, platform, kindness. it's all valuable. so so so much love to all my queers out there, loud or silent đ¤đłď¸âđ
