“We get along well! Definitely. I miss him a lot when he’s away, along with my mom, but I know they’re off having fun adventuring and exploring! My father is the reason I’m so dedicated to books. I have a lot to thank him for.”

“I used to wish on stars all the time, when I was a child.” Mary mused. “I don’t do it so much anymore. Maybe if I’m especially in need of something? Like inspiration or courage, maybe.”

“I take my time with things! It comes with the territory, really. I have to be meticulous with my writing, sorting and editing. Regardless if I’m working in the Bookstore or on my novel, time and dedication are what make a job well done!”

Russell chanced a look at her, unsure of her reaction. It wasn’t what he had expected but he didn’t know what it was, either. What did it mean? What was she thinking?

“There’s no need for congratulations, but thank you. It’s business more than anything, I’m afraid. I felt, at my age, it’s not likely I would find someone.” He thought of Evelyn, who had practically chewed him out, and wasn’t sure if he preferred that reaction of Mary’s sudden stillness.

Somehow, the words found her. 

“I sincerely doubt that.”

What was even the point in her discouraging him from that train of thought? Mary wasn’t sure. She steeled her heart and managed to look Russell in the eyes. “Age is just a number, isn’t it? If you love someone, you should be with them. Marry them, even.”

She had to look away.

“But maybe I’m too romantic.” She shrugged.

“It’s… a bit complicated, I suppose.” She sighed. “I tend to lean towards conformity because that’s what I’m comfortable with and what I’m used to. There’s something safe in it, almost. When I perform charye, for example, for Lunar New Year. I’m usually by myself, so I do both the food preparation and serving. The latter is… often reserved for men of the household. It’s still a little jarring when I do it, and I can’t help but hope that my ancestors don’t mind.”

The change of scenery came holiday time was a strange change for Lillie. She was so used to trees covered in snow with a backdrop of a sleepy rural town. And yet here she was, in the hustle and bustle of a modern city like Leuda. It was strange and made her long for home more than ever.

Still, she may as well fully acquaint herself with the businesses here so she could more easily make a life for herself here. Plus, with Christmas coming up, she definitely had to hurry up and get Christmas presents for her new housemates here and her family back home, as well as a couple of friends… Needless to say, there was a lot to do.

She was just about to start window shopping when she noticed a dark-haired girl with glasses building a snow man. She smiled to herself. It reminded her of her time back on the mainland, when she’d spend winters making “snow sculptures” with her little sister. Not that either of them were particularly creative…

“Looks like you’re having fun, Miss. Mind if I join you?”

Worth a shot, right?

Well, that was a surprise. She didn’t expect anyone to offer help - usually, people just glanced at her and continued on their way. But the woman before her looked warm and friendly.

“Oh. Um.” Mary blinked, obviously surprised. “No, I don’t mind at all! Of course, you can join.” She smiled and beckoned the woman over. “An extra pair of hands will help, especially with the lower bit.”

Mary nodded over at the misshapen ball of snow she had managed to pack together so far. “I can’t quite roll it anymore, but it’s still a little lopsided, and I was hoping it could be a little bigger...”

It happened every time she looked at him.

It was so embarrassing. They worked together! But he had been gone for so long... Mary had gotten used to not seeing him around. Now he was everywhere. His voice, his face, his smile - a constant presence in Bookbound. 

But he was getting married.

Her heart ached when she remembered Russell’s admission, and she knew she needed to try to distance herself from these feelings. There would be other people, right?

She hated cliches, which was ironic, considering she had become one.

The Underground || Open

This place was just amazing!

Evelyn looked up from the middle of the underground city of Epsilla, her eyes completely in awe. This was just…fantastic! She knew about the underground area for a while now, but since she was pregnant at the time she didn’t want to risk any mishaps on the way down. But man…she really missed out.

She looked around at the ceiling above the city, and then happened to bump into someone.

“Oh! Sorry!” Evelyn spoke, stepping back and looking apologetically at them.

“Oh, I’m sorry!” Mary squeaked at about the same time, adjusting her glasses that had skewed on her face.

Epsilla wasn’t as new as it once was, but the place still fascinated her. Sometimes, she would just wander about the place when she was vying for inspiration - it was so different from everywhere else she had been before. It made her mind spin with dwarves and dragons and other fantastic beings. Sadly her daydreaming made her a little too easily distracted.

Mary blinked, and the figure before her shifted into focus. “Evelyn?”

The snow on the ground was sticking.

Finally!

Mary was a little late for decorating the bookstore this year. Her heart was a little less into it this time around. She would get to it eventually... maybe next week? But there was something odd about looking at Bookbound without there being any lights or anything.

Since it was a little slower, Mary decided to amend two issues in one: her sad downturn and the lack of decorations. Bundling up, she made her way outside and started to build a snowman.

Nothing said holiday cheer like a happy little snowman, right?

Violet looked over at the woman with a little bit of a surprised look on her face. Was she from Leuda…? No, maybe not. There weren’t any mountains on Leuda. So…was she from the mainland?

Violet couldn’t help but feel a little bit of curiosity of her own begin to surface. Another person from the mainland…

“I-It d-doesn’t r-rain too often…” Violet spoke, a little, shy smile appearing on her lips, “A-A lot o-of people I-I knew o-on farms wish i-it did rain more, though.” She chuckled hesitantly. After all, some of the farmers said that they could get a break when the weather could water the plants for them.

“W-Where are y-you from…?” Violet timidly asked.

“Makes sense!” Mary hummed, nodding along with the conversation. “It must be difficult, having to water crops by hand and not being able to rely on consistent rain. Must be difficult indeed...”

Her words trailed off as she briefly got lost in thought. The question regarding where she was from snapped her back quickly, however.

“Well, I was born on Leuda. But I’ve traveled to lots of different places! My father is German, and he took me to see the Bavarian Alps once before. He’s a botanist, so we would take a few vacations to all sorts of places when I was young. Not so much anymore, though.”

Mary hadn’t realized how late it had gotten. 

She looked up from the light of her laptop screen and startled at how dark it was. With a sigh, she blinked and rubbed her eyes, rising from her spot at her desk to turn on a lamp or two. 

Her writing had gotten up and run away with her with a burst of inspiration she hadn’t gotten in months. Mary was sure she had written at least three thousand words in one sitting. 

After taking a break to stretch and hydrate, Mary sat down to keep the pace up before it got away from her. Where was she again? Oh, right-

The moonlight spilled out onto the porch, illuminating her face and decorating her hair with a halo of starlight...

The first frost was creeping up on the windows of Bookbound, but it was warm inside. Mary stared out the window, a freshly made cup of tea in her hands.

It was quiet today, no one stopped by the shop. That was fine, tomorrow was another day. A door opened behind her, but she didn’t turn to see who it was. She knew.

“Slow day?” Russell asked.

Mary nodded. “I suppose it’s too cold to go out today.”

There was a sound of acknowledgment from behind her, followed by the shuffling of paperwork.

She turned around. Warmth bloomed in her chest at the sight of Russell at his desk. Feelings she was too afraid to address. 

That was fine, tomorrow was another day.
