the story follows a Saddam’s army officer who lost his status (and pretty much the future) after the US invasion, and being only skilled in military craft he cares little about Islamist ideology and has little respect to islamist gangs they once held in check under Ba'ath rule, but seeks a way to regain his status.

Actually, it’s quite easy to apply that story to the given situation. Also, something like: “He almost manages to provoke the two local divisions of ISIS and J-a-N to eliminate each other in a showdown, when Russian interference forces them to temporally join their efforts against a common enemy once again”
