as the generations pass in hyrule, the truth of the triforce and what it truly means has been lost over time. the triforce itself hasn't been seen in well over a millennia, nor used since the original hyrule was flooded and the people had to resettle along the surface. this means that the royal family's knowledge of the triforce is the most basic of notes: female children born into the royal family can awaken sealing power from the goddess hylia, and there was a great calamity that they will be needed to thwart should it resurface.

❛ I come seeking help... regarding this power that has been handed down over time. Prayer will awaken my power to seal Ganon away, or so I've been told all my life. And yet Grandmother heard them, the voices from the spirit realm. And Mother said her own power would develop within me. But I don't hear, or feel anything! ❜ — Memory , Spring of Power

the loss of the true knowledge of the triforce and what it means for its bearers is what causes zelda to fall adrift during the first Calamity. despite being told and raised that she is supposedly a being of sacred power chosen by the goddess herself, any information from those who had actually awakened this power to its true potential is long lost to time. ( this is, of course, why she is initially so cruel to link, who not only accepts his fate but easily masters it. ) from the start, because the records of her past selves that had awakened were lost, zelda was fighting an impossible fight.

❛ In truth, I understand Zelda's feelings. Painfully so. She lost her mother, her teacher, before she could learn from her. Ten pointless years of self - training, without so much as a book or note to help her find her way... Those in the castle talk behind her back. And I, her only family, scold her for her shortcomings. No wonder she wishes to hide away in her beloved relic research. I'd love nothing more than to console her... But I must stay strong. She MUST fulfill her duty, just as we all must. the royal family, which had continued using the Triforce and wings symbol as Great Seal of Hyrule, had truly forgotten it's historical meaning. ( Like how few people today know that Christmas Tree was originated from Yule celebration dedicated to the Wild Hunt. ) this meant that, until zelda had spent a century holding the triforce of power in place with her triforce of wisdom, she had no idea just what it truly meant to awaken hylia's chosen maiden. during her century of strife, zelda communed with the goddess nayru herself, with zeldas of generations past, learned that she was locked in a battle as old as time from the day she was born. The Triforce of Wisdom embodies the essence of the Goddess of Wisdom, Nayru. The essence of Nayru grants Zelda, the Triforce of Wisdom's bearer, divine powers amplified by her holy bloodline. though zelda has not seen it in physical form on her two counterparts, she can sense the presence of courage and power in link and ganondorf, respectively.

YEARNING FOR ANSWERS, searching the highs and lows of the upended Hyrule for even a hint of what happened to the land's beloved Princess. To that end, he'd run into numerous malignant visions of her, each more vicious than the last. Never his Zelda. Not until he'd learned through Tears what she'd become. All for him.

( So terrible fate he wondered if she'd be doomed to forever roam the skies. )

Waking from nightmares to an empty bed, Link hurries outside to find her watching the sun rise. No, the way she moves lets him know she's been crying. And now he's disrupted her peace. He wonders if she misses the skies, or at least some part of her does ( even if she doesn't remember it ). Coming to sit beside her, he stretches with a yawn. The realization dawns on him that he's sat with his remaining arm furthest from her, quickly moving to the other side to remedy this, though without much elegance as he's still not used to it. He nods to her question, lifting a scar-littered hand to brush away stray tears from pristine cheeks, the question of her status writ clear in his features.

𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐂𝐇 𝐈𝐒 𝐖𝐀𝐑𝐌. That’s the first thing to come to Zelda’s mind as Link leans forward to caress her face with calloused fingertips, the ghost of his touch like the softest of whispers. She’s torn between the desire to lean into the brief touch and the urge to chuckle at his clumsy maneuvering around her — she swallows the laughter, but doesn’t quite manage to suppress the movement to lean into his fingers, her eyelids fluttering closed in something akin to instinct.

Clearing her throat, as if she hadn’t just done such a thing, Zelda reaches up to pull anxiously at the tips of her now shorn hair, a nervous movement that even cutting it hadn’t managed to break. She feels oddly self - conscious around him these days, as if she's afraid he may see something in her he doesn't much like.

❛ Ah, I just couldn’t sleep. ❜ The answer is quick but truthful, despite how it sounds more akin to an excuse to brush off his concerns. She offers him a more genuine smile, glancing at his face before dropping her gaze to his collarbone. Sometimes it's difficult to look Link in the eyes. ❛ Strange dreams, you know? I thought looking at the stars would help me feel drowsy once more, but… well, here we are. ❜

𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐌𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐀𝐆𝐎𝐍𝐘. The light inside her chest aches, clawing at her ribcage with taloned fingers and defeaning roars. She had always known that she would be forever changed, pulled apart at the seams and then pulled back together in a shape not quite the same. There are times she catches herself stumbling in her steps when a breeze flutters through her hair, her body momentarily forgetting that she’s on land and not in the sky, or moments where words fail her and all she can do is let out a wordless sound of frustration. As the first streaks of morning light spread across the sky, she acknowledges that a small piece of her, a small fragment that’s still splintered and unable to feel whole once again, is afraid — afraid that Link will see how different she is, that she’s not the Zelda he remembers, not really.

Swallowing thickly, Zelda turns her head toward Link with a wobbly smile, hoping her expression does not betray the anxiety swelling beneath the surface. ❛ I did not realise you were awake quite yet, Link. imagine how absurdly jumbled zelda's memories have become by the time she reverts to her hylian self. like there's multiple lifetimes to remember, some with time travel as well. girl must have had such a migraine.

Year 320 - 325 — the past events of Tears of The Kingdom occur The Imprisoning War is waged to seal away the Demise incarnate, Ganondorf Ganondorf steals Queen Sonia's Sage Stone in the belief that it will allow him to breach the door to the Spirit Realm Rauru seals Ganondorf with his dying breath, pinning him beneath where his daughter would build the Castle to bury him deep beneath the earth Sonia and Rauru, unknown to Zelda, begin the tradition to name every daughter born into the Royal Family after her to ensure the future

Year 325 - 2000 — a golden age of prosperity

Year 2000 — the Hyrulean Civil War erupts Countless Hylians perish in the conflict The other races of Hyrule cut off Hylians aside from political interactions The Royal Family alone can enter most of the regions belonging to other races

Year 2003 — a severely wounded Hylian woman escapes the fires into the Lost Woods Before she passes away, the young mother begs for her child's life The Great Deku Tree promises her that he will protect her son

Year 2004 — the Hyrulean Civil War comes to an end

Year 2012 — the events of Ocarina of Time occur Zelda knows that the seal on Ganondorf will not last due to his possession of the Triforce of Power Zelda begins leaving detailed accounts for her successors From this point on, all future incarnations of Zelda are born with the Triforce of Wisdom

Year 3500 — the events of Twilight Princess occur Zelda takes her previous incarnations plans and continues setting plans and failsafes

~Year 6000 — Ganondorf returns once again This incarnation of Zelda is unable to awaken her powers to fight against him Link's incarnation does not awaken, either King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule calls on the Goddesses for aid As many people as possible are commanded to seek sanctuary on the mountaintops The Goddesses begin the Great Flood to wash away Ganondorf

𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄 , 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐫𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐥.

New Age 1900 — the events of The Wind Waker occur Tetra does not seek out the lost knowledge from old Hyrule before the remnants are flooded As such, the re - established Royal Family of the later generations would not remember the Triforce or the truth of Demise

New Age 3900 — the First Calamity occurs Link is fatally wounded and is placed in a healing stasis Zelda holds Ganon at bay for one hundred years

New Age 4000 — the events of Breath of the Wild occur Once freed from the battle, Zelda begins traveling Hyrule with Link

New Age 4005 — the events of Tears of the Kingdom occur The Master Sword is returned to its full strength for the first time since the Imprisoning War

personally i love the idea that the reason why the master sword, where demise was sealed in skyward sword and supposedly was never supposed to get out, was able to let demise's curse take root in the form of ganondorf in link's future incarnations because the power of the sword was effectively split during the imprisoning war. as in, ocarina of time ( per my own timeline of course ) only happens because of ganondorf being within proximity of the master sword and demise, thanks to the blade being weakened by being split in two.

basically, the cycle is only set in stone by zelda taking the master sword during the imprisoning war!! fixing it led to breaking it!! outstanding.

important notes for my portrayal of my main verse :

the sages do not swear fealty. zelda isn't interested in rebuilding the royal family into, well, royalty. she thinks she should be a leader, sure, a protector of her people, but a leader in the sense that people can look to her for change and help. she's understanding that people calling her princess may take time to change, but zelda pretty firmly sees herself as more of a priestess than princess, someone that has sacred power and uses it for others.

zelda retains some draconic features when using her power. zelda said it herself: draconification left her forever changed. her physical form changes when she channels her power, no longer consistent, and she is left with seeming immortality ( or at least a really long lifespan ) that will leave her unaging through time. * headcanon for links, if they want: zelda's time with the master sword can have similar effects on him, too, if you wanna. teehee.

time travel has been established to show duplicates can exist. it's established from the moment zelda arrives in ancient hyrule, as she had picked up rauru's own sage stone before traveling back. this means that it doesn't, say, erase zelda holding ganon for one hundred years or anything like that. zelda as the light dragon exists at the same time as literally every other zelda, with the master sword with her until it needs to return to link. ( i'd argue it means the master sword splits in two, personally, one available for the hero to wield and then the "true" sword becoming one once link sends it back to zelda. )
