Get to Know Your Deck Spread
Here’s a lovely spread for all of you out there who are new to tarot, recently received a new deck, struggle with bonding with your deck(s) and/or are having issues getting clear or understanding readings. Sometimes decks have personalities to them, they have their own likes, dislikes, alignments and even preferred ‘work’ to go into. They also often require bonding to get the most accurate smooth readings. I have explained before the differences in my decks and what they like to answer, and I know of others who struggle bonding or understanding who their decks are. This spread should be of help!
1. How is your deck feeling today? Are they in a good mood ready to work? Or are they just having an off bad day? I have found decks, like people, can have moody bad days. These days their readings may be harsher than usual or even not even slightly logical. Its good to see what mood your deck is in before using it for readings, especially readings for others (and especially if they are paying for them). This may also affect the questions they will wish to answer.
2. What element does your deck align with? All decks are different and some may align themselves with specific elements. Is your deck fire, water, earth, air, spirit or a combination of them? This may affect the manner which they read. Air decks may be more interested in giving creative advice and focus on individuality, free-spirited natures, the arts, and even love. Water decks tend to focus on emotions and seeking gentle fixes. Fire decks tend to be the most assertive, they are competitive, encouraging, brave, passionate but also tend to support the idea of feuds. Fire decks, also from my experience, tend to be very blunt about things. Earth aligned decks tend to be a bit calmer, they focus on bonds with people such as family and friendships. They also focus on careers, prosperity and money matters. Spirit decks, tend to like to do more of the ‘divine’. They focus on self-enlightenment, self discovery and communicating with supernatural forces, guides, and deities.
3. What Questions does your deck enjoy answering? Does your deck enjoy answering questions about love? Friends and family? Do they enjoy giving personal advice? Do they like money matters and career focuses. This could determine what questions they may be the most accurate and ones they will give the best advice on.
4. What Questions does your deck least like to answer? These are the questions they may not have the most accurate advice on. Such as my Rider deck greatly dislikes romance questions so I never use him for them because he will always just advice break-ups no matter the situation.
5. What is your deck’s current feelings towards you? Does your deck feel close to you? Is it a strong professional business bond? Or is it more like a friendship? Do they feel distant from you? Like you ignore them? Do they not understand you or feel like you are a stranger? Do you intimidate them?
6. How can you improve your relationship? How does your deck feel like you two can do to help build your relationship? Practice more or perhaps make spreads.
7. A Negative trait. Pretty self explanatory, this is a negative quality about your deck that it feels you have a right to know about. Take note that this is a negative trait in the mind and views of your deck, its something it feels is negative.
8. A Positive trait. Again, pretty self explanatory, this is a trait that your deck feels is a positive trait it has. Again, this is a trait seen as positive in its mind.
Cleansing The Cards
It’s natural for tarot cards to accumulate & harbor energy, since that is the primary force they operate through; it can “clog” or “restrain” them, making them rather unproductive, though it doesn’t damage them. They simply need to rest and be refreshed every now & then, just like the reader does.
METHODS ||
I suggest trying all of them out & sticking to the ones that work for you.
Shuffling Simply shuffle the deck with the intention of cleansing it, in whatever way that’s most comfortable for you & for as long as you feel you need to.
Sorting Sort the cards – arrange them in order of the 22 Major Arcana and 4 suits of the 56 Minor Arcana. Allow the deck to “rest” in proper sequence for a while. You could also simply sort the cards so that all are upright & none reversed.
Knocking Tap the deck against something, or tap it with your hands / another object.
Sunlight (This method is better for projective/masculine decks.) Place the deck in sunlight and leave it there until you feel that all the unwanted energy has been burned, faded, blinded, or driven out.
Moonlight (This method is better for receptive/feminine decks.) Place the deck in moonlight and leave it there until you feel that all the unwanted energy has been drained, coaxed, flushed, or guided out.
Salt Place the deck in a sealed, air-tight plastic bag and bury it in organic salt. Let the salt soak up the excess energy for a few days, or until you feel it’s done.
Crystals Place a crystal that corresponds to your intention upon the deck, or somewhere near it. You could also form a crystal grid around it.
Smoke Pass the deck through the smoke of incense or burning plants that correspond to your intention (most people would use dried sage or rosemary).
Pendulums Swing a pendulum of your choice clockwise in circular motions above or on the surface around the deck with your intention in mind until you feel that all the unwanted energy has been drawn out & expelled.
Sound Play any instrument with your intention in mind, or place the deck near a speaker and play music that corresponds to your intention.
*You can also cleanse each card individually rather than the whole deck at once, if you prefer. It takes longer but it’s more thorough & “intimate”
MAINTENANCE ||
After cleansing your deck, store it in a special box/bag/cloth and/or with a quartz crystal to protect and generally upkeep its clean state.
Simple tip: cleanse your deck every time you use it. This is the easiest way to maintain a healthy deck, & the ritual of it can improve your general relationship with the cards as well as your connection with them in the moment.
Other good opportunities to cleanse your deck: - It’s brand-new / inherited / borrowed / secondhand - Another person has come into contact with it (especially if it was without your permission – the deck will let you know if it’s been meddled with) - It has come into direct contact with a surface or object you didn’t want it to (this mainly applies to the tarot readers who take extra precautions to preserve the energetic integrity of their deck – such as only laying the cards on a designated cloth/mat/board, not allowing others to touch them, etc) - It has come into direct contact with another deck - It hasn’t been used for a long period of time - It’s been accidentally scattered/messed up/physically damaged - Many different readings have been performed with it - An extensive/intense reading has been performed with it
Symptoms of a deck that needs to be cleansed: - An irregularly large amount of cards drawn in a reading are reversed - An irregularly large amount of cards are falling or popping out of the deck while you shuffle & handle it in general / the deck won’t stay together - The readings are becoming unclear, or you’re having an unnecessarily difficult time interpreting & discerning their meaning; you’re getting mixed messages, the cards aren’t cohesive, and so on. If you feel like you’re not gaining anything out of the readings you do with a deck, you need to cleanse it. - You get the sense that you need to cleanse the deck. This could manifest in many different ways; perhaps you feel bored of the deck or distant from it, or perhaps its “personality” changes, or perhaps you simply feel off about it. Common “off” feelings are slowness or lethargy, disengagement, bitterness, exhaustion, a sense of a contrary or combative disposition, misplaced irony, dullness or hollowness, strain, stress, aggravation, confusion, or alienation, and may come from either you or the deck itself when you interact with it. - You can’t bring yourself to focus on the readings you do with it; neither you nor the deck can maintain your concentration / awareness / full presence. - You consistently lose and misplace the deck or you can’t find it when you want to use it – or other people have moved it, even just once. If you don’t give it a spot and it tends to wander around your house, that may translate into your cards. Cleanse them and pick a permanent/regular place to keep them. - The deck loses its “magic” and begins to feel like plain paper to you - Using the deck consistently drains, frustrates, upsets, or annoys you / using it no longer brings you whatever beneficial quality it usually does.
Stop Learning Tarot Cards Like Flash Cards (You’re Better Than That)
One thing I’ve noticed as I’ve started teaching tarot cards to other people is that they have a tendency to think that every card has an individual meaning and it is their duty to memorize 78 complex sets of meanings before they can begin reading for others.
That’s simply not true.
It’s also incredibly inefficient and totally kneecaps you when you move on to learn another deck (and try memorizing ANOTHER 78 complex sets of meanings). Cards exist in relation to one another. Understanding those relationships lets you remember meanings quicker, better understand how cards in a spread might be connected, and give much smoother readings.
If you’re learning Tarot for the first time or looking to bush up, here’s my advice after reading cards for 10 years. Please, learn from my mistakes. Tarot is a language
In the same way you learn letters and string them into words and then string words into sentences to communicate, tarot is a language you learn so your intuition can communicate more fully with you and others. And like a language, it’s often best to start with the phrases that you’ll use the most.
Practice: Go through your deck and pick out no more than 12 cards that are really calling to you and look up those meanings. Write them down if you’re up for it. Go through your deck and pick out no more than 12 cards that give you a feeling of unease and do the same. Notice any reoccurring symbols?
Tarot is a story
How you understand that story may vary on your tradition, your experience level, your aims. Most standard Tarot decks follow the Fool’s Journey through the Major Arcana as he becomes more skilled and then more enlightened. A similar pattern can be seen in each of the suits. The Court Cards are less narrative in my opinion but a similar progression can be seen.
Practice: Take out each of the suits one at a time and lay them out in a row. Read the meanings of each card and see how the story progresses. Write down a summary. Do the same with each of other suits’ courts and the major arcana.
Tarot is a system
You aren’t fluent until you know the language well enough to speak smoothly and in most situations. Similarly, it takes understanding Tarot at a high level to give the best quality readings and read without a book. No card exists in isolation and just like when they show up in a reading, you must read them in relation to the rest of the spread - it helps a lot to know them in relation to the rest of the deck.
Practice: Lay every card in your deck out like this (pardon my bad MSPaint job). Major Arcana up top and Court Cards off to the right and all the numbers lined up with the Fool and World left hanging. Pick one of the cards that resonated with you in the first exercise and look at how it relates to all the other cards in the deck. If it’s the 8 of Pentacles, what do the other 8′s look like and speak to? What do 8 (Strength) and 18 (the Moon) in the Major Arcana connect to it (if at all)? How does it relate to the rest of the story of the Pentacles? Hope this helps! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
this is my favourite spread to use when i’m reading for myself, it’s always very insightful.
Witch Tip
One of my favorite “witchy” things to do is writing someone’s name that has annoyed you, pissed you off or whatever and then just throw the piece of paper in the freezer. Promptly forget about it (maybe set a reminder on your phone to eventually take out their name, or not. Your call!) Make them chill out, make them always be cold in summer; the different intentions are endless and effortless.
FYI I learned this from someone who is totally not a witch at all, but it’s one of my favorite things ever. This, and writing someone’s name and putting it in your shoe so you walk all over them when they’ve really angered you. 😎
my belief is that when youre using curses, hexes, etc on people who have actively wronged you, youre just redirecting the negative energy back onto them so you're not going to incur negative side affects for yourself. like, i heavily believe in the law of attraction, so i believe the energy we put out is the energy we get back, but if someone has been putting out that negative energy and harming you youre just sending them their negative energy back quicker than it might have gotten there before
hmm… i like this alot. like alot alot. i believe everything has energy and i love how you put this!
Simple witchcraft 🌹
In the early 1900s, people loved collecting their family’s and friends’ signatures in autograph books. This evolved into collecting ghost signatures, which were made by signing a piece of paper with slow-drying ink and then quickly folding the sheet over to create a personalized inkblot. Source

💧🔮 Rain Divination 🔮💧
simple divination for when you’re watching rain drip down the window
yes/no divination
🔮 choose two raindrops near the top of the windows.
💧 one is “yes”, the other is “no”
🔮 meditate on your question
💧 whichever merges with another raindrop or reaches the bottom first is your answer
interpretive divination
🔮 wait for a droplet that catches your attention. it will represent whoever you are inquiring about.
💧 keep watch for the shapes merged droplets take, it will symbolize an event the occurs because of your interaction with the person
🔮 interpret shapes based on your own associations, or those similar to tea readings
💧 merged droplets’ paths indicate meeting someone new who will have influence on your life
🔮 stray droplets that start in the middle indicate an event within reach but not currently on your path
💧 when the droplets reach the bottom of the windows, that is the unknown, there there have yet to be decisions that affect that far into the future.

Growing Herbs in Water
Growing herbs in water makes it easier to control your plants growth conditions, it takes up less space, and produces bigger and healthier plants. Easiest/most common herbs to grow in water from cuttings (propagate) are lemon-balm, mints, basil, sage, thyme, and oregano. Rosemary also works, but will take longer to sprout roots. Herbs like ginger, turmeric, and garlic might not do very well.
To start, you’ll need:
- A jar/ container
- Tap or bottled water (avoid distilled water)
- Liquid plant food
- Rooting hormone
- Herb stems
Cutting Stems:
Choose a stem that is a good 4-6" tall, and looks healthy and strong, and cut it below a leaf joint. You can also buy cut herb stems in the produce section of your grocery store. A good example:
Next, strip the bottom leaves so that about ½-¾ of the stem is bare.
Then use scissors to make a slanted cut right below the lowest leaf joint. The area that the leaves grow out of, leaf joints or nodes, have a lot of meristem cells, which form a callus over the cut and sprouts roots. And cutting at a slanted angle increases the surface area for both water and nutrient uptake.
After this, place the stem in a jar of (not distilled) water, and place the jar somewhere moderately sunny (depending on the needs of the herb). (Source for pictures)
You don’t NEED to do much else after this, but it would likely appreciate some help. Add a rooting hormone to the water, which will stimulate the stem to grow roots and contains a fungicide to prevent the cut from rotting. You can buy a premade rooting hormone, such as this one, or you can make your own using willow twigs. Here’s a DIY.
Also, plants usually get their nutrients from the soil, but since we aren’t using soil here, we will have to provide nutrients for the plant by adding it to the water. Again, this is something that many people do well without, but it will likely give better results. You don’t need much, certainly not as one would with an entire hydroponics system with a nutrient reservoir. Just add a drop or two when the roots start growing (about two weeks in), and maybe once a month after that when you change out the water. You can buy liquid plant food like this one.
Finally, changing the water can depend on what plant you have, such as lemon balm which needs to have its water changed weekly. If you are using an opaque container, algae won’t form as quickly as it would in a clear one, and doesn’t need to be changed quite as often. Generally, more or less every three weeks or when the water is a bit murky should be fine. Done!
