I think God speaks to everyone in the internal “language” that they understand. For some, it’s scripture and church. For us Christian witches, it’s often nature, or mysticism- for everyone it is different. God is in the flickers of a candle or the energy of a stone or the mythology of your people or the smile of the person you love just as much as in the Bible. God is in every person, in every inch of creation. Worship him where you see him.

Witchblr PSA on Saying “Hoodoo/Voodoo”

Let’s talk about “hoodoo/voodoo” for a sec…

I know yall mean well when you want to bring up Africana practices and don’t know how to refer to them so you say “hoodoo/voodoo,” but unfortunately there’s a lot of problems with saying this simple set of words.

It would be wonderful if Witchblr could make it a goal to remove “hoodoo/voodoo” as a phrase from its vocabulary forever.

Voodoo and hoodoo are NOT the same thing at all. When they are referred to as “voodoo/hoodoo” it makes it sound like they are completely interchangeable. I also see people using “hoodoo/voodoo” to basically refer to ALL practices, religions, and traditions of African origins. It’s just so wildly inaccurate and perpetuates misinformation that it makes my head spin, yet I see it all the time.

Hoodoo is an African American folk magic practice. It has African roots, but developed during slavery in the US. It’s not a religion, just a magic tradition. It’s 100% closed.

Voodoo should always be capitalized in spelling because it’s a religion. It has African roots, but also developed in the US, particularly Louisiana and New Orleans. It shares a lot of commonalities with the related religions of Vodou in Haiti and Vodun in West Africa. It’s semi-closed because it’s initiatory.

So as a white magic practitioner or witch or as a fellow POC who doesn’t practice these traditions, one thing you could do to support us is to say “Africana traditions” which means “all paths that come from Africa or the African diaspora” instead of reducing it to “hoodoo/voodoo” because it’s wrong on so many levels.

If you like and if it makes sense to say it for a specific context, you can also write “hoodoo and Voodoo” - the problem isn’t in referring to them, but in lumping them together with a slash or in using them to refer to all Africana traditions when they are just two of many.

Do you know of any black saints? I'm trying to learn more about different saints in general, but I wanted to start there.

Awesome! Some I can name off the top of my head are St. Augustine (yes, one of the most influential theologians was Black) and his mother St. Monica, Felicity and Perpetua (two of my sapphic faves!) Catherine of Alexandria, Martin de Porres (his mother was either African or Native American), St. Moses the Black (yes that’s his title lmao), St. Benedict the Moor (also his official title), and Sister Thea Bowman (a super awesome African American figure).

And here is a website with a whole list of Black/African Saints. And here’s a webpage with just fifteen if you want to start out with a less overwhelming number. This site (which I also link below) has a good number of the most well-known early African Saints.

I think people often don’t realize that certain Saints are Black because they are, alas, whitewashed in most images of them (Augustine being a prime example of that). So when you click the links above, you’ll probably take one look at the images included on webpages and go “lol this guy’s not black!” It can be frustrating, but luckily non-whitewashed art is out there – it’s usually very ancient or very contemporary. I’ll include some here.

Africa played a key role in early Christianity, and it’s a shame that history tends to be ignored by Christians today. As this webpage attests, three of the earliest popes were African! as were many martyrs. One place you can go to look into that is the website of the Center for Early African Christianity.
