How to Read Candle Flames
Hey witches! This is a little post on candle scrying, and how to interpret the flames, especially before casting a spell. Begin by lighting your candle and getting into a meditative state. Once you are calm and your mind is quiet, look at the flame. Use this guide to interpret the flame.
A Strong Flame: This indicates that power and energy are going into your desire for manifestation. When a figure candle is used, a strong flame generally means that the person represented is winning, angry, or using authority over another. When two figure candles are present, the higher and stronger flame represents authority over the other.
A Weak Flame: This can show that you are facing heavy opposition and must redo the magic several times to overcome the power you are facing. The weak flame can also indicate, on a figure candle, that the subject is losing the battle. The weak flame that goes out means that you’ve missed your target altogether, start over.
A Jumping Flame: This is an attention getter. It can indicate raw emotions along with explosions of energy.
Rainbow Flame: If your flame is composed of various colors this indicates that there are outside influences at work that may be beyond the power of the questioner. Colors can also show that the question may be best answered at a later date. The factors involved may need a change to develop and evolve for a clearer view of what may occur.
Direction of Flame Movement
North: On a waxing moon, something physical is manifesting.
East: Something mental is manifesting.
South: Your energy is strong, and is good for spell casting. In love matters, you can expect love that doesn’t last too long.
West: Emotional aspects. A good sign of success and love.
Direction of Smoke
Northern Movement: Something physical is manifesting. You will have to work for what you wish to achieve.
Eastern Movement: Something mental is manifesting. Think things through and have patience.
Southern Movement: Something intense and short lived is manifesting. Success comes rapidly and with intensity.
Western Movement: The manifestation of strong magic intervention. The issue is too emotional. You are too involved. Step away for a time. Clear your thoughts.
If you have any spirits, they may converse through the candle’s sound:
Infrequent Noise(Soft): Pure thoughts, intimate conversation.
Frequent Noise(Mild): An authority figure giving orders or directions.
Frequent Chatter(Strong): Arguments, quarrels or loud disagreements.

Witches & Words: Deities
Language is more than a powerful tool; it is power itself. Every word has meaning and intent, and is spoken by willpower and action. Witches understand the power involved in communicating. This is a series about how to properly communicate with different entities.
Introductions:
Stay calm. Deities do not want to work with people who are not respectful of their Divity and power.
Be truthful and stick to your values. Do not lie about your name, experience, or values to a Deity. Unlike some entities where it is useful to never offer your true name, Deities demand a certain level of respect and honesty. You don’t want to anger Them.
Don’t make promises upon meeting. You can invoke, make offerings to, pray to, worship, and/or involve in a ritual a Deity without being devoted to that Deity. Devoting yourself to a Deity is a big decision that has a serious level of commitment, and you should never make a promise to a Deity that you can’t keep.
Ask what name you may call Them by! This is key because They may offer you a symbol or name to call Them by and invoke Them with.
Conversation:
Ask questions! Prepare a list of questions to ask. Nothing life-altering at first, just simple things. Ask Them how long they have been in your life, if They would appreciate an offering (and if so, what), or even if They could tell you a story.
Be respectful and receptive of answers. If a Deity doesn’t give you the answer you wanted, or even refuses to answer, respect that. Don’t try to push them to give you a different answer.
Be clear about your expectations. Be sure to clearly communicate what you need and want out of a possible relationship with the Deity.
Be respectful of the Deity’s time. If the Deity needs or wants to leave, let them.
Goodbye:
Thank the Deity for their time, knowledge, answers, etc.. Deities thrive with praise!
Say a clear goodbye! This is very important! Communicate that you are ending the conversation, and suggest a time or way that you may contact each other again.
After:
Make a small offering to the Deity. Don’t offer anything big; burning a few herbs or even the light of a candle would work fine. Just offer something to show your appreciation for the Deity.
Cleanse! Cleanse your altar, tarot, crystals, or whatever you used to contact the Deity. You don’t want the energy of that visit to interfere with future rituals or spells.
Watch for signs. A Deity may send signs after communication that they are there, so be alert!

The Great Goddess Hecate (Hekate)
Who is Hecate? She is the Goddess of Witchcraft, Necromancy, Ghosts, Magic, and, in some instances, the Night, Darkness, The Mist, and Moon. For some She is also the goddess of motherhood, protection, and the sea. She is a Hellenic deity, born of the Titans Asteria and Perses. There’s a few beliefs circling around Her being a crone goddess or a Triple Goddess, but those are modern and neopagan beliefs—which She predates. I also consider Her to be a part of the Chthonic deities.
Symbology: Black dogs, Wolves, Keys, Torches, Flames, Torches, Crossroads, Serpents, Daggers, Birds of Prey (crows, ravens, owls), the Moon, witchcraft tools (such as cauldrons, tarot, athames)
Offerings & Devotional Acts for Her:
Figurines of any of Her symbols
keys, skeleton keys, lockets
fire witchcraft and candles, flames, matchsticks
dedicating any lunar or symbolic jewelry to Her
black/dark crystals such as obsidian and onyx
nocturnal animal imagery
black/cool colored glitter
baneful/poisonous herbs and plants
pomegranates/berries (She seems to really like blackberries)
dark blend wines
honey, cinnamon, poppy seeds, chocolates (dark)
mugwort, lavender, roses, jasmine, dragon’s blood
bones and feathers from birds of prey (please check your local laws about obtaining these)
pinpricks of blood (please DO NOT attempt this if you struggle with self harm/etc, blood magic is particularly strong and isn’t for everyone. She will understand if you cannot offer that to her).
Taking midnight walks, setting up altars and rituals at crossroads, paying respects to the dead and practicing your craft in a cemetery
Any playlists, poems, literature, whether it be your own or just a piece you associate with Her, also make wonderful offerings.
Lunar Influences & Connections: Reaching out to Hecate tends to work best at night, and really any time the moon is at it’s peak. The Witching Hours, midnight to 3A.M., during strong lunar influences (blue moons, blood moons, eclipses, new moons, etc) all hold strong bonds with Hecate. Also, any time it is particularly foggy or your surroundings are covered in a mist is a good time to try to connect with Her.
Disclaimer: These are correspondences that have been gathered through my personal experiences working through my craft with Her. If you find She responds better to different offerings/during different times, by all means, stick to it! Your bond with Her is your own and should be cultivated in whichever way works best for you and Her. Thank You!

Cute Apollo Moment
So I sing in my car. When I'm driving ANYWHERE, I need music on. It's a requirement of my existence. So, since I just started this craft and I've been hearing about air witches and singing and people dedicating their singing to Apollo, I decided to introduce myself to him and dedicate the singing in my car ride home from work to him.
And boy oh boy, what a warm and happy experience it was to dedicate my voice to him.
So I sang a BUNCH of my favorite songs for him, and I put my hand on the window and felt the window get warmer with the sun. Thanks for listening, Apollo.
(Also, I'm pretty convinced he loves Kinky Boots, because I was singing Raise You Up and Step One and felt even more warm happiness than I normally do. Maybe he just loves it because he can tell how much I love it, but I honestly think he'd love the show anyways bc of its themes of shining your light and making the world a better place than you found it through love.)
Things to do for this Full Moon Lunar Eclipse!
Get a reading from me!
Cleanse your space.
Charge any of your witchcraft items.
Make lunar eclipse water.
Practice any form of divination.
Set goals (not just intentions we are taking a Capricorn Moon here)
Write down your dreams, they may give more clarity during this cycle, embrace that.
Most important is emotional SELF-CARE.
Full moons always bring out emotions but with the added effect if the eclipse the emotional intensity is going to be heightened.
The Witch Mothers
Contrary to common belief, there is no one Witch Mother, but several. The title of Witch Mother is given to goddesses (and sometimes to lesser spirits) who are greatly knowledgeable in the craft and wish to teach it to humans. Each of these beings are separate from one another and their methods of teaching can vary drastically.
Babalon/Lilith
This goddess of Theistic Satanism is deeply intertwined with magic and tends to appear as a nude young woman with horns and covered in blood, or simply wearing a deep red dress. She is connected with the darker aspects of the Earth and can especially teach the ways of trance-work, blood magic, sex magic, curses, spirit and demon work, divination, and the properties of all things. She also tends to favour the “nastier” parts of magic that would include dirt, insects, and bones. Her presence is hypnotic and dark, yet do not mistake her for evil, as she is a Mother. Her husband is also known as one of the Witch Fathers.
Hekate
The Greek goddess of witchcraft, the moon, spirits, and necromancy. Hekate seems to enjoy appearing as a shrouded middle-aged woman who comes with an aura of mystery and silence. She is one of the more withdrawn Witch Mothers but is of course highly skilled in what she does. She especially can assist with moon magic, divination, spirit work, natural properties of ingredients, and psychic abilities.
The Queen of Elphame
Her name seems to be unknown, but she is known as the elfin queen of the Faerie. This faeire reigns in one of the kingdoms of the Fair Folk and can appear as a young and beautiful woman crowned with flowers. She especially enjoys teaching the arts of glamour, healing, faerie work, and herbalism. As a Queen of the Faeries, she is rather proper in personality and should be treated with respect as you would with the goddesses.
Nicnevin
Also a Faerie Queen, this fae rules over a darker kingdom than the Queen of Elphame and she tends to appear as an older woman or a young, mischievous-looking woman. Nicnevin is one of the several Scottish beings to be identified as a Witch Mother of Samhain (others being Abundia, Zobiana, Satia, etc.). This entity can especially help teach the arts of cursing, glamour, divination, natural properties of ingredients, and faerie work.
Cerridwen
This is the Celtic goddess of magic, wisdom, rebirth, creativity, and is known as The Keeper of the Cauldron. She often appears as a young woman with long, flowing hair or (according to myth) a white sow. This goddess especially enjoys assisting with herbalism, prophecy, divination, potions, healing, and transformation. She is a very wise and motherly goddess and always loves to share what knowledge she has.
*Note: this is a list of some of the main Witch Mothers and does not include all of them. Information is based off my own experiences and dealings with these complex deities and spirits. If you should work with them, please give them offerings as thanks.
