Thinking about that scene in 2x4 (Lancelot and Guinevere) when Merlin sees Gaius before they leave to rescue Gwen and he just straight up is like, "Don't even try and talk me out of this". Don't even try. I'm not even going to pretend to listen. She's my friend.
Thinking about how Merlin saved Uther's life back in 1x12 because its what Gwen would have done. Not because of Arthur, not to keep Morgana from trouble, not for all that Gaius told him — because Gwen told him that Uther's death wouldn't fix his wrongs.
Thinking about how Gwen agreed to do all sorts of crazy things with him, and never asked more than he told her. Because she trusted him. And that's what friendship is, right?
Thinking about how Gwen was Merlin's first friend in Camelot, and his closest, and his last. Arthur might have been the person Merlin was closest to, but that friendship was so clouded by destiny, and secrets Merlin had to keep. Merlin might have lied to Gwen, but it was never a huge part of their friendship. Neither was destiny. There was no greater power. They just had a whole lot of love for each other from pretty much day one.
Thinking about how when Merlin returned to Camelot after Arthur's death, he would have gone straight to Gwen. And she would have forgiven him. Because that's what friends do. She was the last true friend he had left. That was the friendship that he came home to.
Their friendship was the purest. More than anyone else's, at all, ever, and I'll defend that to the death.
