I was giving some lectures in Germany about the death penalty. It was fascinating because one of the scholars stood up after the presentation and said, “Well you know it’s deeply troubling to hear what you’re talking about.” He said, “We don’t have the death penalty in Germany. And of course, we can never have the death penalty in Germany.” And the room got very quiet, and this woman said, “There’s no way, with our history, we could ever engage in the systematic killing of human beings. It would be unconscionable for us to, in an intentional and deliberate way, set about executing people.” And I thought about that. What would it feel like to be living in a world where the nation state of Germany was executing people, especially if they were disproportionately Jewish? I couldn’t bear it. It would be unconscionable. And yet, in this country, in the states of the Old South, we execute people – where you’re 11 times more likely to get the death penalty if the victim is white than if the victim is black, 22 times more likely to get it if the defendant is black and the victim is white – in the very states where there are buried in the ground the bodies of people who were lynched. And yet, there is this disconnect.
Bryan Stevenson (We Need to Talk About Injustice)
Sadly their isn’t disconnect. Surveys and research shows white peoples support of the death penalty goes up when it is proven to effect and kill Black people more. White people know what’s happening. They just don’t care or rather, they revel in it and want it to continue when aware of this disparity.

don’t tell me we’re mean to fat people because we’re “concerned” for their health. just don’t. not when a million products to help people drink themselves into stupors, not when alcohol is so normalized that people get blackout on a regular and brag about it, not when an instagram post about getting shitfaced gets likes but a post with a thick lady gets medical advice.
don’t talk to me about how you’re trying to protect them when you won’t fight for a higher minimum wage to help people be able to afford better food, not when you won’t vote to remove government subsidies that make it difficult to find food without preservatives or additives, not when honestly you can turn a blind eye to flint’s basic human need for water but caption a body “whale” because whaaaatttt you’re trying to help him!
don’t start with me. “oh we’re normalizing obesity now?” you mean like how we’ve normalized sexual violence, how we’ve normalized sexualizing young girls, how we’ve normalized eating disorders, how we’ve normalized serious drug use, how we’re normalized oh gosh i don’t know any of the following: spousal violence and emotional abuse, hitting children to punish them, violence against young men who are emotional, violence against women, violence against sex workers - do you need the list to go on?
are you so serious about their “health” that you’re also advocating for lower medical payments nationwide, even for universal healthcare? have you listened to how doctors regularly misdiagnose or ignore huge problems in larger patients because they claim it’s “because of the weight”? are you doing something about that? are you making it easier for people to have access to gyms, to nutritionists, to help programs?
almost nobody looks at a video where people are doing risky things and says “can we stop normalizing homemade flamethrowers? i don’t want people to think this is okay, because it’s not” but one person posts themselves on the beach wearing something that shows skin and suddenly it’s open season, suddenly we’ve all got medical degrees.
here’s the thing buddy. i don’t even care if you’ve got a major in nutrition. the truth is you don’t care about health. the truth is you’ve got a shitty opinion.
Jellyfish Lake in Palau. Apparently the jellies have lost their ability to sting because of lack of predators in the lake and you can swim with them!
BUCKET LIST.
WAIT BUT THAT’S NOT EVEN THE COOLEST PART: These jellyfish carry small populations of algae inside their bodies and derive much of their nutrition from the sugars that the algae produce. The jellyfish follow the sun across the lake each day and rotate continuously, so that the algae are always getting maximum sunlight exposure for photosynthesis. Then at night they dive to deeper parts of the lake so the algae can absorb nitrogen. It’s one of the best examples of endosymbiosis in action and it’s KICKASS.
I can honestly say i’ve never seen a more entertaining ladle.
