...I need to whine at someone to get my suitcase from the attic (stop putting things where I can’t get to them!) and also Koala just shoved his head into the paper bag containing the stuff I bought on my errand. Cat, no.

That too-pleased air was more than somewhat noticeable, and Mablung could only inwardly sigh. Misplaced, perhaps, or simply curious; Beleg was certainly excited about something, though what that something “was”, Mablung hadn't an idea. No, dear Beleg, he was not tired enough to turn someone away, but if it really was something that couldn't wait, he likely wouldn't have admitted to being tired, anyway. Mablung could handle being awake a little longer than he cared to be if it meant getting something important out of the way.
Beleg had said it wasn't urgent, though. So then something personal. Which wound up leading thoughts in a few directions—most of which he hadn't bothered to consider just for sake of the way things were. With certain things dismissed for various reasons, it left Mablung wondering just what it was Beleg so needed of him.
He'd been about to voice that very question when Beleg stepped up again, and Mablung found himself distracted instead into trying to make sense of the movement in conjunction with that demeanour. Confident thing.
...And then that—well, that. A faint shade of red lit across his face.
“Beleg...” Mablung considered himself to have few weaknesses in dealing with others, but the beaming Elf before him was a glaring one when he let his guard down. Backed into a metaphorical corner, like this, really. Or it felt like it. To play the fool and offer his hand literally would do little good; to say no would be dishonest; to acquiesce or say nothing at all would be rude; to say yes... would seem too soon.
Rather than any of those things, he found himself laughing quietly to himself.
“You would be the sort to ask right where you stand.”
I keep forgetting I’m not stalking all of the accounts on Thuringwethil... so I keep logging in with her and missing things. whoops.
Not so much running into him as running up the staircase so eagerly. Though light on their feet and with quick reaction, it was a matter of common sense: children were taught not to run up and down the stairs, and though they were of those who hadn't come into the world in such a manner, the idea remained. But at least Beleg wasn't so excited as to run the whole way, and Mablung was glad to see him slow down.
Though, perhaps a small part of him might not have minded—

How well he knew how unapologetic Beleg was! For something like this, not even sheepish. No matter, because it didn't appear to have disturbed anyone. The confession, if it could be called as much, earned a low hum, and a skeptical look—far from made in earnest. Mablung loosely folded his arms across his chest, and upon the posing of Beleg's question, he shook his head.
“No; I'm not likely to be for a while yet, either.” But he was curious. What was there to ask of him that would lead Beleg to rush after him? And the earlier lowering of his head hadn't escaped Mablung, either; what was that about? No doubt he'd find the reason linked to whatever favour or request Beleg had in mind, so for now he didn't move to puzzle it out.
Unlike Beleg, Mablung was well-aware of the time and place, so when that voice rang out he had to suppress the slight wince; were they out in the woods, it would have posed no problem, but here… Nevertheless, the Mablung did pause upon reaching the top of the stairs—to stop immediately would've been unwise, he felt, irrespective of the hour. It was more the way Beleg raced after him that prompted the placement, and he waited quietly for Beleg to catch up.
A part of him wondered just what could be so important that the warden would forget himself and the hour, but then Mablung quickly reconciled it with the fact that this was Beleg. Not that the Elf was irresponsible in such a manner, but more that his eagerness at times was not unknown. A thing Mablung found himself rather fond of in his friend, most of the time, though now it made him wonder just what the excitement was over that Beleg would behave so.
Once reached, Mablung bowed his head for a moment before straightening and regarding the other.
“What is so urgent that you find need to shout?” If it was urgent at all. Grey eyes wandered, taking stock of Beleg's state—or what could be seen of it, as calm and plain as the tone in which he'd spoken, no intention of real chastisement outside the suggestion of one already made.

For the Ñoldor Mablung yet held little fondness; for Dwarves he perhaps held even less. But Mablung had come to accept the situation well enough: he could suppress his personal judgements in the face of those who became more than their forefathers--for he did owe respect to Thranduil, now harboured no ill-will directly towards the Elves of Rivendell or young Legolas and his companion (though he did greatly question the young one). It had been a learning process, but one he only benefitted from. The behaviour and deeds of Fëanor's kin and the sack of Doriath would never leave him, but through that exposure it became easier to see beyond it, at least. Not that it had been immediate and not that he hadn't still spent many a day with what could have been a layer of frost across his shoulders.
There were parts of their stay and service he hadn't minded, that he had even enjoyed, and though he at times would recall the spirit of the place, he was not so attached that he regretted moving on from it. He did not dream of it the way Beleg did, either. Were he ever to wake before Beleg, he would be sure to ground him; it was how they'd ever been, wasn't it? Beleg light and Mablung solid.
Though he felt his companion stir, Mablung had yet to rouse; it was merely a note before his mind slipped back into sleep. Even then, he shifted, his hold changing but only slightly in accordance with the form he'd since curled around. He was further lulled as fingers moved through his hair, but the delicate kiss snagged the last remnants of awareness and drew him closer to wakefulness.
And so it started, twisting some, drawing away only enough to look up to Beleg with a groggy, questioning face. It was another moment before Mablung decided he was well awake enough, and shortly after that he made effort to sit up, weight settled on his hip so as to remain yet somewhat tangled.
He said nothing, merely watched the other for a drawn-out moment, head faintly tilted. If there was something to be said, surely Beleg would voice it. And if he wouldn’t, if the need remained, Mablung would attempt to coax it from him. ...and if there was no need, he’d settle and encourage Beleg to do the same.
Oh hey, activity.
I’m still not sure wtf is up with the hip plates, but I’ll eventually make those look reasonable. Whenever it is I clean this up.
But hey, captain in armour. Being grumpy. Probably watching babbies learning how to do thing and wondering how hard he can push them before it’s too much.
Headcanon is that the armour crafted for the Elves of Doriath is a blend of primarily chain and scale for large-scale battle (with a few pieces of plate). More commonly worn, however is a blend of leather armour with some chain. Shit usually doesn’t hit the fan, after all.
Usually.
And then someone has to go and be a brat about a shiny rock.
Also, on that note, I plan to some day draw him and the other poor sods who got sent to humour the idiots receive the Noldor’s invitation. And maybe a follow up with him lying down with his face in Beleg’s lap griping about how awful the experience was.
