Watching Gokusen J-drama and my favorite parts are every time Shin secretly smiles when he looks at Yankumi. It also includes the times when she does something funny and he tries so hard to stiffle his laughter so he can appear nonchalant. Like MY BOY YOU ARE SMITTEN SMITTEN!! This is just 13 episodes documentary of him falling in love with her lmao.
The entire "clear-Ucchi-from-thief-suspection" operation is so damn funny, and that includes Shin's entire reactions towards Yankumi's passionate dedication for this lmao. He is just happy to see her happy.
Also when Yankumi promises the class she'd give them a kiss on a cheek if they win the ball tournament. He actually smiles at the silly idea despite recoiling later.
And he likes listening to Yankumi's grandpa about the times when she was little. That one scene with him and Yankumi listening to that story, taking place in between the men's shogi game, that scene screams very "family." It's like a man who is listening to his wife's childhood stories from his in-law.
That one time Yankumi dresses as a cheerleader. Shin actually looks amused and unlike the others, he doesn't turn back and leave. He does like what he sees 🫵😏
Shin doesn't look like he enjoys seeing Yankumi going to marriage meeting. He definitely doesn't spy on them for fun juicy gossips like his gang but for sizing up potential rival. (He has sized Shinohara up with sarcastic look when he finds out Yankumi likes the latter.) If anything, he seems part angry, part sulking, part nervous the entire spying time.
(I think he comes anxious of whether the matchmaking will succeed but he then gets another reason to be anxious which is if she blows her own cover as the granddaughter from a yakuza clan lmao he sure gets double headache.)
Like the entire class, he believes the meeting will fail. So he too is surprised to hear that the guy wants to date Yankumi. But unlike everyone except Kuma, it isn't in a happy or amused way. And unlike Kuma, he is very good at hiding his emotion. (Or Kuma is just very visibly upset that everyone quickly notices him instead.)
He also doesn't seem very happy with Shinohara inviting Yankumi out for dinner, despite knowing Yankumi likes Shinohara and his peers cheering on them. Shin might have a resting bitch face, but even he openly smiles from time to time in situations he genuinely enjoys. Yet in that scene, he does not smile. He only starts smiling at the very end when Yankumi starts having fun with the class instead.
(Shin's resting bitchface is saving his ass because OI UCCHI YOU'VE GOT THE WRONG PERSON! WHO HAS A CRUSH ON YANKUMI? IT'S NOT KUMA, BUT THE SILENT GUY AT THE BACK!! It's so fucking funny yet frustrating that nobody in the S1 catches on that he likes Yankumi in that way. I love Jun Matsumoto's performance as Shin so much, he can pull off the entire "subtly being absolutely whipped" thing.)
It's not that Shin isn't interested in women. He is just interested in one woman lmao. This guy is so YEARNING. He is not interested in having her cook, tho. The fuck is that smoky stuff????
I love that after the symposium event, he hypes her up very much and VERY LOUDLY. Well, prior to that he did give the threatening speech as the class rep, if that's not loud enough in impact. But seeing him honestly laughing, yelling and cheering for her without any restraint is just so heartwarming. In the same hall, he's changed a lot from ep1 when they first met and he gave her a pissed-off death glare.
"Sorry, but there are four of us." OH MY GOODDDDDDDDDD. And that's very Shin-like way of declaration lmao. So much for "No one sees her in that light." I wonder how Tetsu feels when he realizes he's been giving free information about Yankumi to a rival all along lmao.
Nothing to say about the special graduation episode except this man is really down bad for her. Noticing her voice amidst his loud classmates from different floors? Check. Incredibly happy that they got to be in the same onsen and openly doesn't mind if she spent the time lecturing him and his friends? For god's sake, check. In that staff room scene, either he is about to confess about his career choice or his own feeling for her, it doesn't really matter actually since he is trying to be honest with her. The talk in the river bank is honestly quite intimate, even though they don't talk about romantic matters. And at the end of the day, as a student, a person and a man, he deeply, genuinely respects her.
