When you think of a heroine, you think of someone who is admired for her courage, outstanding achievements, and noble qualities. Alex Russo isn’t your typical heroine. Dry, lazy, and kind of a jerk – Alex Russo should be off-putting in her narrow-mindedness and egotism, but despite her obvious flaws, there’s a charm to her that keeps making her likable. The middle child and only daughter of Jerry and Theresa Russo, Alex, came from a family of Wizards. The clan they’re from only allows one child of each family to keep their wizard abilities through adulthood. Jerry initially won his family’s wizarding competition but gave up his powers to be with his wife, who was a mortal. The Russo children still gained powers from their father.
Jerry took it upon himself to be his children’s wizard instructor. Where her older brother, Justin, was the perfect student, Alex never took wizard training seriously. She preferred to coast by the skin of her teeth. She was a wizard; magic would solve everything for her. It wasn’t the best mindset to have, knowing that one day she may not have her powers. While she had them, she was going to make the best of it. So, Alex often found herself in magical mishaps with her brothers. It was safe to say there was never a dull moment in the Russo household.
As she got older, Alex began taking her wizard training seriously. She always hated that Justin assumed he would be the family Wizard because he was older … and a better student. She was just as deserving. If it meant putting in hard work, well, she’d do it this once. When the time came for their Wizard competition, Alex was supposed to be the winner. However, just before crossing the finish line, she stopped to help Justin, who was trapped. It allowed him to win the title, leaving Alex and their little brother, Max, mortal. Alex had grown enough as a person to accept her fate. She knew her brother would be an amazing wizard. He was always destined for it, right? But before being crowned, Justin admitted that Alex had helped him, which allowed him to win. Because of his transparency, not only was Alex deemed the family wizard, but Justin was also allowed to keep his powers.
Eventually, Alex traded her mischievous ways to be part of the Wizard Tribunal. She had come a long way from who she was as a teenager, but that girl still lived inside her. Alex fondly carried her everywhere. Her work towards the betterment of the wizarding world caught the attention of Merlin. Alex had heard of Elias, the stories of the great sorcerer Mickey, and, more recently, the war that took place. To her, it wasn’t her issue to solve. She had enough on her plate making sure people abided by the magical laws in the Wizard World. It wasn’t her home, nor did she have any emotional attachments to a city she’d never visited, but Merlin saw potential.
The magical users of Elias needed someone like Alex to help guide them. Her unorthodox way of thinking was the right balance to Donald’s teaching. Alex didn’t see herself as a teacher. If they wanted a Russo to give knowledge, they were better off getting Justin. However, Merlin wasn’t one to back down either and made Alex an offer she couldn’t refuse.
Now, in Elias, Alex has taken up the position at Walt Academy as the wizardry and potions teacher. She’s a fan favorite among the students - as she rightfully should be! Taking up the position felt like coming home in a way. She could remember the days when she sat in class being taught by her father, and now here she was implementing that wisdom to the next generation.
When she’s not teaching, she’s offering her help at the Arcane Hollow. The beauty of magic is that it’s unique to every user. The magic of Elias is potent. Something she had never experienced before, even in the Wizard World. It scares her to step into this unknown, yet at the same time, it also excites her. Alex is happy to share her knowledge to help improve the city. This isn’t her battle to fight, but for Merlin’s sake, she’ll give this whole teacher gig everything she’s got.
