Assuming we get seasons 2-5, my main question here is: What happens after Brenner’s death in s4?
I keep thinking about Dustin’s theory in s4 about Vecna’s psychic connections with his victims.
In s4, Vecna, as the MF’s 5 star general, chose his victims on the go based on their vulnerability
But it was different with Will.
This interaction from the first shadow:
Henry - “You need to learn to do what it takes to protect what you love”
Joyce - “I don’t understand”
+ all of the parallels between Henry and Will
I think this suggests that Will was the mind flayer’s choice since before he was born, which is why Henry said this.
Another thing that’s different with his connections is that they happened telepathically. Will was a physical connection, making it the strongest.
Demo is his foot soldier, Vecna’s the 5 star general and Will is The Spy.
Remember when the duffers said to rewatch season 2, specifically episode 4, “Will the Wise” and episode 6, “The Spy”?
So much emphasis on season 2.
Why rewind the Snowball scene? To remind us who has been watching Will since the beginning: The Mind Flayer.
Rewind s2 further and see Joyce rewinding the Halloween tape to see the mind flayer watching Will. Then there’s the arcade scene where you could still say he’s watching Will.
Thanks to that connection, Will is unknowingly his spy throughout the show. Seeing through his eyes like we see Will do to him in s5.
In a way, the MF has also been keeping surveillance tapes
Vecna opened the gates to make a psychic connection with the town itself. Starting the illusion. Which is why it’s all sunshine and rainbows despite that apocalyptic s4 finale.
Through Will, the MF knows that Mike is the heart. He’s the key to completing the illusion. Vecna then makes a connection with him in Sorcerer.
The epilogue is Camazots, the final illusion of conformity meaning happily ever after.
So if you think of the MF’s spying as surveillance tapes, s5 is the “edited” version (an illusion). The party’s “win”.
Brenner’s tapes are the second play through, leading to the real ending.
So after his death, I think it will then be Mike’s or Will’s memory, completely unedited. The true ending.
