Tori Mae rolls over onto her own back and stares up at the sky, laughing along with Pond as he collapses next to her. The ground is cool against her back, a welcomed exchange for the hot gravel and pavement she usually finds herself lying on this time of year. Summer was her least favorite season all thanks to the heat but she tried to savor moments like this that reminded her that it wasn't always so bad.

"None of those toy cars are really ever worth all the money." She says, turning her head to watch as Pond shakes it. Sure enough, the whirring stops and she figures it won't work again now. Not that it mattered, they had their fun. "And they don't exactly make 'em to be very user friendly - at least for me. Once I take those tiny motors apart I can't seem to figure out how to fit them back together. You'd think it'd just be a mini version of the big thing, but nope." She breathes out a big sigh as her head turns back to face the sky. "Shew, I probably couldn't fix one of those back to good as new if my life depended on it."

As Pond checks in on her she shakes her head, "Nah, I'm fine." She'd probably have a few scratches but it was rare for her to not be covered in something. Her forearms had a few scars here and there from scrapes or burns while working on cars. She'd gotten better as she'd gotten older but she used to stick her arms right under a freshly hot engine. Her Pops had to help her learn the art of patience. "Nothin' broken so I'll live. Besides, I couldn't let that poor thing litter the lake! It ain't even suitable for the fishes."

Pond lets out a hearty pshaw paired with a flap of his hand in the air, “I don’t believe that for one second. Betcha could if you put your mind to it. I just don’t think it’s worth it at all,” he laughs softly. Hell, the one he’d just broke had been half broken already and destined for the landfill. He’d only given it one last hoorah before it officially kicked the bucket and what a glorious hoorah it had been.

“Right you are,” he agrees firmly, nodding along. It’d been the sole reason he’d chased after the fool toy car in the first place. Didn’t want it littering up their lovely lake with trash.

With a clap of his hands against his thighs to rub them mostly clear of any mud and dirt sticking to his fingers, he finally bends his knees beneath him and rises up to stand, a hand offering out for her to take to help her if she’d like. A little twinkle of mischief in his eyes as he looks at her, like he's planning something, and it's visible there in his slow growing smile. He never could keep a good poker face.

Hiro’s eyes glint with a momentary, inexplicable fire that has Kenny raising an eyebrow. They have half a mind to attribute it to nothing more than customer service lassitude, but then he’s checking for a fucking price tag, as if them walking their ass up here and asking about it didn’t already indicate that the (beautiful, beautiful) items were so flagrantly displayed without one. The longer he examines it, the more time they're given to slink their arms over their chest, crossed and cross— and in their head, he’s cursed and cussed.

The actual fuck is this guy’s problem? For all of Josie’s audible heartache and Frankie’s damn near idolization of the twerp, which is vexatious in and of itself, it’s currently being eclipsed by the childish irritation they’re trying very hard not to exhibit. (Not hard enough, because it clearly shows, but it's not their fault he's decided to swerve directly into acrimony.)

Briefly, Ken holds a memory in their mind’s eye: swiping a second blank card from a festival table, stoned as a rock and chuckling to themself as they scrawled it out, messy and quick: Hiro Uehara, count your days… Had he seen them? Possibly even recognized the handwriting? No way. So why is he the one giving them attitude? They have all the reason to be displeased with him. Anyone else in his situation might even yearn for armistice or understanding in the face of any of the Suttons. Not Hiro, who instead gives up on any semblance of congeniality when he finds no point in it.

Stop gritting your teeth. Honestly, they're really not trying to make it seem obvious that they're not fond of him, but it doesn't keep their next question from coming out staccato and bitter.

"...Do you know when he'll be back?"

Well, naturally, of course Hiro knows when Miles will be back. It would be a pretty shit thing of a boss to do to leave their staff members suddenly without word of when they’d be returning but of course, Hiro isn’t going to share this information with Ken. It’s not even because it’s Ken and they’re trying to buy this lighter that he has already assigned to ownership to himself in his head, it honestly wouldn’t have mattered if they were a complete and total stranger who intended to buy something else like the weird statue of a goose in the back that he swears follows him with its pearly dark eyes. Hiro wouldn’t have told anyone.

The Springs is a generally amicable place with little cause for concern or secrecy, but Hiro isn’t really from the Springs. He grew up in the city and you didn’t tell people how to find others because you never knew whether or not the friendly face was a front.

So, Hiro only crosses his arms over his chest, tongue pressed indignantly against the unhealed hole of a lip piercing that isn’t there anymore and shrugs his shoulders. “Dunno.”

“Try again Monday. Maybe he’ll be back, oh, and we don’t do holds. You can leave this up here. I'll put it back."

In her eyes, the Empire City/West Core rivalry is a dumb joke that was far too overdone. Still, there is a reflexive urge to at least reference it. An urge she squashes in favor of an actual attempt at conversation.

“It's nice to be reminded I'm not the only outsider,” she says, a slightly sardonic curve to her lips.

In retrospect, it seems clear that Hiro isn't one of the townies, but Val's attention had been more so on the job than him during their initial meeting. But there was something subtle in his mannerisms that set him apart from some others that now seemed blatantly obvious. A guardedness, maybe? Or maybe it was just the knowledge of their otherness in such an otherwise tightknit community.

She reciprocates his sly smile, ignoring the slight ache in her chest at the little peek into their family dynamic. “Must be rewarding to see the literal fruits of your labor.” Ugh. She regrets the words as they leave her mouth. But the regret only doubles as a warm laugh echoes through her mind. Damian always loved making puns, and it absolutely delighted him whenever she made one— inadvertently or not.

Jaw clenching at the memory, Valerie looks back down to the fresh produce. It's not an ideal setting to keep her mind off of her foodie ex-fiancé, but she can't really do much about that without just absconding from this conversation.

“How much?” she asks, nodding toward the peaches. To her relief, her voice sounds normal, steady.

And, hey, her assumption was correct. “Oh, good.” She's glad that at least one of the kittens will be finding a good home soon. “We met at the Stag,” she explains with a shrug. “Had a few drinks, bonded over shared heritage,” exchanged deep dark secrets. “They seem like good people.”

Hiro’s lips split into a sharp slant, “Yeah. Shiny Pokemon,” he returns with the ghost of a scoff. In a world of normal Pokemon types, they were the rare shiny variant. It wasn’t necessarily a good thing. It just meant they were different. Sometimes the differences weren’t enough to make much of a difference, just enough to notice.

She makes a pun and Hiro gives her a withering look, a lift to his brow that says ‘Really?’ without having to actually say it. Nothing wrong with a good pun but acting like there’s something wrong with a pun is half the fun of puns in the first place.

Hiro considers the price of the peaches for a moment before responding, "Since you're a fellow shiny, I'll give you a discount. Half off everything so, two bucks a pound."

"Saw 'em walking around here a while ago," he vaguely gestures down the lane of the market. Unsurprisingly really considering it looks like the entire town is here today. Everyone and their mother and their aunt and their mother's mother or however the saying goes. "No one else seems all too interested," he releases a sigh as he crosses his arms over his chest, "Most people already have a farm cat or twelve, apparently, so kind of hard to place the rest of them. And I can't keep them forever."

Patty has a harder time believing that this mystery woman has never had hush puppies than she does believing that this isn’t a date. It helps that Quentin seems exceedingly sincere—even in this little back-and-forth they do, it’s fairly easy to catch them in a lie, and this being platonic seems resoundingly truthful.

Still begs the question, though: Who is this mysterious lady? If she’s never had hush puppies, she must be an out-of-towner, right? But Q’s surprise might indicate the contrary—a Bleeding Hearts resident who has never once tried Granny’s hush puppies. How that could’ve happened is a bigger mystery than anything she’s ever encountered in this town. She simply must know more.

“Never had hush puppies?” She can scarcely hide how incredulous she is. “Not even once? Like, maybe tried them and didn’t know that’s what they were called?” Her brows are knitted, nearly meeting in the middle of her head with how gobsmacked she is. “You’re right. That can’t be right.”

She’s still thinking about it as they step through the doors of T&T, the bells jingling to signal their arrival. Artie is behind the counter today, but the place is especially busy, so he only has time for a quick wave and a hollered “Welcome!” over the thrum of conversation and bluegrass playing softly over the speakers.

“…Do you know why she hasn’t had hush puppies?” She’s following Q down the aisles, idly grabbing what Meemaw needs for the night’s supper without even sparing a glance at the shelves. She’s too invested in this new mystery. “Is she a picky eater? Or on a hardcore, life-long diet? Or a mole woman who has never seen the sun? You’re about to change her life, Q.”

Patty's interest on the mystery of the hush puppies has done the job, diverting away from the topic of their potentially being on a date with this woman, which it is not a date, to the more pressing matter at hand. Which is the hush puppies. Their chuckle is low and deep, a rumble in their chest as the questions start to roll out like drops of water on a windshield, each one barreling down with momentum, collecting with another to become a multipart question that slaps the glass.

"A mole woman?" Quentin damn near hollers with laughter at that notion. "What sorta mole women you know about that lives here in the Springs, hm? No, no, Patty, she's not a mole woman. And I don't rightly know why she hasn't ever had a hush puppy before.. I suppose I'll just have to ask her that when I see her."

He's grabbing a couple of items from the shelf as they go through, placing them gently and orderly into his handbasket.

It's almost as if Tori Mae can hear the whirring sound of the car before it even begins - call it something of a Spidey sense of hers. Instead of jumping into action though, she watches Pond as he stomps toward it. And she can't help but chuckle to herself as he picks it up and gives it a shake.

"Can't hurt!" She calls, standing on the edge of the lake, and follows with a shrug. Machines were odd like that. On occasion you truly just needed to give the insides a good rattle to shake something loose. There was no way she could ever explain why, and to be quite honest, Tori nor her pops ever questioned such a phenomenon. It was just the way of doin' things.

In an instant the whirring has stopped and the car has taken off quicker than a cat jumpin' across a hot tin roof. Tori Mae barely has time to process what's happening as the toy car comes barreling toward her, or rather, toward the lake. Though it was only a toy, Tori didn't have it in her to send the cursed thing straight to its end just yet. "I got it!" she calls in response to Pond's directive, catching the sight of the remote control clattering to the ground as she herself is diving down.

With barely another moment to blink Tori Mae is chest down, one elbow covered in mud on the bank of the lake and the other bracing herself just barely in the water - never afraid to get a little dirty. "Aha!" she rasps as she manages to grab the car just as it's about to dive in and settle with the fishes but not before it crashes into the crook of her muddy elbow, sputtering to a stop. That might leave a little bruise but it's nothing she'll worry about.

And then she's laughing as she's lying there, the motor of the toy car whirring again, intermittently this time. "Well, we made a good effort, I think?" She knows it's probably not true but she can't bring herself to accept defeat just yet.

Pond hollers triumphant as Tori Mae dives into the embankment and the toy car crashes into her elbow. They don't stop running though the urgency slips out from their pacing and now they're practically prancing, high knees into the air with their arms catching flight and floating at their sides like he might take flight if he tried hard enough then collapses onto the embankment right beside her with a puff of laughter spilling from his throat.

Soft mud catches his legs and it's wondrously cool against the heat of summer. Pond relishes in the mix of sensations, head falling back with another bout of laughter before he clutches at his sides and leans to grab at the silly whirring car. "Look at this piddlin' thing," Pond gives it another shake and it stops whirring. "Garbage, ain't it? Serves me right I suppose," he rolls it across his leg, leaving muddy track marks against the tan of his calf and not minding the mess at all. "Shoulda could left it for you to fix up. I haven't the mind for these sorts o' things."

The toy car gives a final groan like it might come back to life and then chokes on the mud in its gears and no amount of shaking it now or turning the wheels revives it. Oh well. Fair enough. "You didn't get hurt now didja? Fallin' after this fool thing?" Pond points the car at her, gesturing toward her elbow she'd landed on, a fleck of mud plops onto the ground between them.

It's starting to look like this toy car is done for.

It's motor is just making whirring sounds but the wheels have stopped turning so it just grinds itself into the dirt. "Awe, come off it," he throws his head back and releases a sigh into the sky then redirects a disgruntled expression to the bright red toy car before stomping over toward it. He picks it up, gives it a good hearty shake, because that fixes most things, and then drops it back onto the dirt.

Seems to have done the trick cuz that car is off to the races. Literally. It's somehow doubled it's speed and goes haywire even without him pressing any buttons on the remote control in his hands. "Wait, wait, wait," Pond presses the buttons frantically, trying to make it stop, trying to make it turn around, trying to make it do anything but the damned machine is fixing to ignore everything. Garbage toy! No wonder it was in the actual garbage. Or beside the garbage. It had clearly been intended to be thrown out when Pond found it and stuck in some batteries. It drove around town just fine but apparently dirt roads and uneven terrain were not for this toy car made!

He starts booking it after the car, flipflops flying off his feet as he runs. It's whizzing directly toward the lake! Pond shouts ahead of him to someone in their direct path, "Stop that car!" He throws the remote control trying to knock the car off course but it just clatters and breaks apart as it hits the ground, batteries scattering.

Sunlight streams down in full force without the reprieve of a single cloud in the sky, warming the back of his neck. A single bead of sweat licks down the side of his face and leaves a wet spot on the ground. He tucks his shoulder and drags the fabric of his top across his upper lip to wipe away the sweat.

It's unbearably hot but he's humming.

Bright blue chalk arcs against the sidewalk, fingers dusty with all the other colors he's used for this drawing: a giant beetle made of rainbows, body iridescent, as iridescent as chalk can get anyway. He smudges his fingers against the coarse ground to blend in the colors and then leaves his smudgy signature at the bottom right corner of his creation like he always does. It's just a blue wiggle and doesn't even remotely look like a name but it doesn't have to. Then he leans back, appraises his work with a grin, picks up his chalk, dusts off his hands against his jean shorts and then moves on.

These little pieces of art don't really serve a purpose anymore. He'd started doing this when his siblings first started walking to school, leaving a little trail of colorful pictures every few paces away so they'd know the path to take. It became a fun game for them and they'd excitedly return home and tell their parents all about what they'd seen. A butterfly on the side of Thistle & Thread! A dragon on the ground by the library! A unicorn just outside town hall! Pond had been with them of course, every step of the way, waiting to see their reactions, pretending he hadn't been the one to draw them up, letting them marvel in the magic of fantastic creatures that popped up overnight.

His siblings don't need help navigating the way to school anymore but it's become such a fun hobby that Pond can't bear to stop.

He crosses the square, heading away from the Happy Apple and toward the library and drops back down to a squat to the stone pathway in front of the sign. He's in the shade this time and it makes the heat of summer more bearable.
