Something about spending an early morning at Honest Auto made Tori feel a little more like an adult. There were some who probably thought it was a little weird to feel such a way about work but Tori couldn't imagine spending a morning anywhere else. Well, maybe she'd prefer to still be in bed but after waking up before the birds around 4:30 am and not being able to fall asleep, she figures she'll walk across the street and practice productivity - at least that was advice her mother had given her years ago. Though her mom only walked from her bedroom down to the kitchen when she couldn't sleep.
But this morning Tori chooses to embrace the warm summer air as she locks her front door and shuffles across the street to Honest Auto. Murphy wanders behind her sleepily, his white paws padding softly on the ground. As they reach the door of the shop he yawns, "Me too, bud." Tori says, patting the boxer mix on the head gently.
Murphy sniffs around the shop, Tori following. She fills his shop bowl from the bag of kibble and by the time she's finished her little shop coffee pot is chirping. With sleepy eyes she takes her mug and fills a cup. This morning calls for a strong cup of black coffee. They have a short backlog of projects. Tori's confident they'll get caught up by the end of the day, and she's assigned her dad to an easier fix. He'll grumble when he arrives in a few hours but Tori doesn't care. He's the one who made her in charge.
A few hours pass, Tori fills the time by doing routine maintenance on her mother's 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. It was an anniversary gift from her pop before Tori was born and growing up it was one of the first cars she learned how to service. Her hoodie has since been abandoned. Tiny biceps now exposed through the edges of the sleeves of her tshirt as she's topping off the transmission fluid. She hears Murphy stir in her bay, heading toward the open garage door and eagerly greeting the person. "Murph!" Tori calls, beckoning the dog back with her hand. He obliges but isn't happy about it. He just wants some pets.
"Sorry about that!" She wipes any residual liquid from her fingers with a shop towel and tosses it to a bin near the car. "Mornin'!" She greets, a bright smile and wave their way. "I won't lie, we've got a full schedule today but if it's a quick fix I reckon I might be able to squeeze ya in."
No amount of cussing, effort, or even whipped, simpering pleading will induce the air conditioner in the Beast to function properly. It blows nothing but disappointing tepid air, and -- sadly -- not even much of that. It is a dismal state of affairs. During any other time of year -- when the temperatures range anywhere from downright frigid to pleasantly warm -- this would be nothing more than a minor inconvenience, easily remedied by rolling down the windows and letting the cool breeze blow through the old Range Rover's cab. However, it is mid-July and there is no cool breeze -- only stultifying, brain-frying ninety-plus degree heat, turning the Beast into a rolling oven. And reducing Miles to the humiliating predicament of having to venture out in -- dear God almighty -- shorts and a muscle shirt, garb he ordinarily would not be caught dead in outside either the gym or his own backyard. Born in chilly, foggy, eternally gray England, Miles is not constitutionally suited for hot American summers. Is prone to sunburn and heatstroke and general tetchy irritability whenever the mercury rises above eighty-five degrees Fahrenheit. Honest Auto is barely a mile away from Chez Briggs-Bennett. But by the time Miles rolls up he's already pink-cheeked and sweaty and somewhat desperate. And so addled by the heat he doesn't notice the big handsome boxer mix right away -- an unthinkable oversight under any other conditions. He spills out of the Beast's driver's side door, trainers hitting the gravel with a crunch. Fergus, who refused to be left behind at home, leaps out after him -- completely oblivious to both the blazing sun and his wilting master, eternally brainlessly happy, plumed tail waving. "Full schedule...?" he repeats, dismayed and blinking, when the smiling, curly-haired mechanic comes out to greet him. And immediately begins patting pockets, looking for cash. "I will pay you an absolutely ludicrous sum of money if you will just -- please, I am begging you -- squeeze me in and fix the bloody A/C."
