FireflySummers’ Guide to Arguing Against the Use of AI Image Generators
(AKA I hate AI image generators so fucking much that I published a whole ass academic article on it)
Read the Paper: Art in the Machine: Value Misalignment and AI "Art"
Citation: Allred, A.M., Aragon, C. (2023). Art in the Machine: Value Misalignment and AI “Art”. In: Luo, Y. (eds) Cooperative Design, Visualization, and Engineering. CDVE 2023. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, vol 14166. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-43815-8_4
The purpose of the original paper and now this post is the following:
Provide at least one academic article that you can cite. (Full paper + citation available below)
Make explicit community values that have previously been implicit, in order to better examine your own perceptions of the online artist community, and where you sit within it.
Provide rebuttals to common pro-AI talking points, with the intention of shutting down the conversation and reclaiming the narrative.
What this paper and post cannot do:
Act as a sole authority about the online artist community and its values. We are not a monolith, and it is up to you to think critically about what, exactly, you want to take away from this discussion.
Provide a way to convince AI Evangelists that what they’re doing is wrong and bad and needs to stop. You will never convince them. Again, focus on shutting them down and reclaiming the narrative.
Final Disclaimer: I'm a very fallible researcher who is still very much learning how to do academia. I cannot speak for the entirety of the online artist community or fanartist community. We all have different lived experiences. I have done my best to include diverse voices; however if you have concerns or critiques, I am open to hearing them.
If you show up to debate in favor of AI image generators, you will be automatically blocked.

If you have read this far, thank you very much. I hope that you have found a constructive lens for approaching the war with AI image generators, as well as a new tool for shutting down debate and reclaiming the narrative.
Have you written something about your thesis? I'd love to learn more about it!
i’m more than halfway there !! its not anything revolutionary, but it has something to do with the thai gl fandom space and how it plays a part in identity (especially queer identity) expression for queer youths in my country.
its a fairly small research, and most definitely has its flaws, but i’m determined to finish it !!! :D i love these type of topics so much, so i decided to do it for my uni final project.
i’ll definitely hit you up if i get around to (finally) finish it !! i’ll be happy to share if you’re interested to read it (one day). wish me luck !!! (and thanks for the ask ! my first ask omg ^•^) ˖˚⋆
If you're interested in Flat Girls, I wanted to let everyone know that it's actually the director/screenwriter's (Claire Jirassaya's) second major sapphic film!
In 2014, she directed That Day of the Month, which is similarly a coming-of-age work that focuses on the relationship between two twelfth-grade girls, Goy and Lee.
TDOTM is also notable because it's one of the first productions that Goy Arachaporn appeared in. She would go on to be involved with several different queer works, including serving as the screenwriter for I Told Sunset About You.
Claire's first film, Welcome Home, which she made in 2012 as a student filmmaker also includes some more minor queer themes, as well as (possibly) another 2012 release, She is My Best Friend (unfortunately it doesn't seem like this one is available online, so I'm not able to fully confirm).
In a 2015 interview, Claire said that,
"I’ve always felt that homosexuality is a natural thing, though I never intended it to be the focal point of my work...My first film, Welcome Home, was more about family relationships, though I added a touch of my own preferences.
Still, my film ended up being lauded for its portrayal of lesbian love, and it kind of became my signature. My later films were based mainly on my own relationships, where I fully intended to deliver a lesbian message." (BK Asia)
Aside from P'Nay (Yes or No, LSLS: Pae Jai, TSOU, and Only You), Claire is one of the directors who's been around the sapphic media space the longest- which is something that I really wanted to share/highlight before FG's upcoming release ❤️
End Notes:
Welcome Home is available on Youtube (embedded above), and you can watch That Day of the Month for free on Gagaoolala.
Quarantine Stories, another project she was involved in, also has an episode with some sapphic themes (although I'm not 100% sure if she was one who made it). Episode 10 (the one in question) is linked here.
Lastly, although it wasn't a show she explicitly directed, Claire also served as one of the screenwriters for the 2018 mini series i Stories. This is a project split into four different episodes (including one that has a bi main character, and another that has a lesbian one). You can watch both of the eps mentioned above on Youtube (available here and here).
In total, this means that she has been involved in (at least) 5-6 different works with sapphic characters or themes, spanning from 2012 to 2025.
I love learning that nearly every actor in The Untamed auditioned to be Xue Yang but somehow one guy auditioned to be Baby (Lan Sizhui) and got assigned Big Bad by the casting director anyway. They were like, damn, your dimples are lethal, you’d better be careful with those things or you’ll kill someone… wait, you know what?
i just binged ratu ratu queens the series and omfg,,, all i’m saying is asri welas toxic yuri ex-best friend situationship wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card GIRLLLL
overall the series was SOOOO GOOOODDDD—dare i say waaayyy better than the movie !? as a prequel, it focused on the four women fighting for a better life in an alien city, as (il)legal aliens, who found strength in familiarity and numbers. women helping women !!! I LOVE TO SEE IT !!!
it really nailed the multi-ensamble dramedy genre. it wasn’t dramatized/exaggerated, but never boring !! not too serious but not shallow either.
my favourite part would be that this show is centred on middle aged women in vunerable and emotional starting points, but it didn’t lack the youthfulness, brightness and exhuberance throughout. I LOVE WHIMSYYYYY (remember to support your local women-based communities and small businesses yall !!!)
so, three words to describe: genuine, real and relatable.
when i say relatable, it means the show succeeded in making you totally engaged and empathetic for the characters. THEY GENUINELY HAD ME ROOTING AND HOOTING FOR THEM
most of it is credited to the casts’ talents: nirina zubir, asri welas, happy salma, and tika panggabean TRULY had the chemistry of a lifetime 10000/10 THROUGH THE ROOOOF !!!!
not a single scene did i doubt the sincerity of the words and actions they did on screen. it all felt so real and natural. group scenes flowed like it was barely scripted and it was just them as their characters doing adlibs after adlibs.
art wise: i looovee the cinematography, the title cards, and the soundtrack… SO FUCKING GOOOODDD absolute indonesian 90’s-00’s excellence !!! whoever picked the soundtrack… mwah mwah <3 (+ i love urban cityscape scenery and they TOTALLY NAILED IT)
writing wise: im amazed how balanced everything was. the comedy lines was ALWAYS on point, but they also never missed with the heartfelt, heartwrenching and heartwarming moments. every time ???!!! thanos could never
each characters had their equal screentime. lots of dynamics explored to show each personalities, contrasts and unity. every character backstories ventured and dished out sucessfully!
not a single fail in this short but sweet series, truly no notes :D plotlines and flow 10/10 rewatchibility 10/10 ITS MY NEW COMFORT SERIES
jody terkekeh. "si ucup makin mirip lu aja, gue liat."
ben langsung menolehkan kepalanya kembali, seolah tidak terima. "kagak ah anjir. lu liat tuh bocah? bibit bibit bucin tolol itu. mana ada gue kayak begitu."
"bucin, debatable. tolol, iya."
"kalo gue bucin lo juga sama ae bucinnya."
"mananya gue bucin?"
ben menggelengkan kepalanya kembali. "anak kita, jod."
I read an AU where BenJody are the parents of Ucup on Twitter.
Ucup introduced Piko to his parents and obviously, they accepted him lol. The first pic is when Piko is about to go home, BenJody ‘forced’ Piko to take picture together to commemorate the event lmao.
The 2nd pic is for another meeting when Piko visited the shop and BenJody are so excited seeing him :)
