Second, on character: Both WWX and LWJ are highly ideal characters, so there wouldn’t be too much dispute on their moral standing. They’re perfect as the protagonists. Of course, I do like WWX a lot, but if I’m looking for a boyfriend, sorry, I’ll only have LWJ please. All of their character elements were created in binary opposition. The bold and the principled, the concealed yearning and the flaunting coquetry, the red rose and the white rose, the cold, dignified one and the devilish, untamed one… The more different they were, the better. my new-ish hottake is that wei wuxian is the one who fell in love at first sight, lan wangji just realized and accepted his own feelings first

to be more precise, wei wuxian was immediately attracted to lan wangji after meeting him as he was already chasing lan wangji and daydreaming about him the next day. meanwhile, for lan wangji, i think wei wuxian was initially a 'disturbance' in his life of order and restraint, a splash in the midst of his calm and still waters. at worst, he was annoying and at best, he was interesting. what really started to pique lwj's curiosity seems to be wwx's bold answer to lqr in class as it showed that wwx is as brilliant as he is mischievous. but i think attraction came for lwj during the time they spent in the library. wwx charmingly annoys lwj into liking him. in other words, wwx wooed lwj. but lwj is shy and probably unsure of wwx's sincerity. and this attraction grew as he observed how wwx lived such a carefree life. my guess is that he became aware of his feelings some time before or in the beginning of the indoctrination camp. and then wwx's careless words in the xuanwu cave must have strengthened his resolve to never let wwx know his feelings as wwx babbles about not liking men and how it's not lwj he's flirting with anyway so why is lwj so bothered. any by the time he hums a song to wwx, lwj has fallen in love.

back to wwx. like i said, he was already all heart eyes about lwj from the very beginning. there's no theorizing needed tbh, he basically lists everything he found attractive about lwj in his recount of their first meeting. he admires lwj's beauty and skills, and even his widely talked about intelligence. and while his words make it seem like he was annoyed about being caught and lwj enforcing the rules, it was also actually something he admired about him. wwx had met his match and, at the same time, he admired that lwj was firm and true to his principles. even lwj's cold look was attractive to him. by engaging in a fight with him, lwj had unknowingly shown a side of him that wwx never heard in the stories about the other twin jade of gusu lan, and it made wwx want more. i think wwx was already in love with lwj before he left the cloud recesses, he just didn't know it yet.

tl;dr: their game of chase in drunk 2 represents how their love story started—wwx chasing after lwj until lwj finally let himself be caught.

Wei WuXian was planning to catch him, not at all expecting that he’d walk right into his arms. Speechlessly startled, he even forgot to reach out. been thinking of this all day. in the early days of mdzs eng fandom when it was mostly southeast asians and diaspora asians, the popular interpretation was also leaning more towards them actually being in love this whole time. some even theorized that madame lan must've killed the master for qhj's sake. and seeing people still continue to insist on the interpretation of it being a straight up abusive relationship even after the revision, it really makes me wonder why the now predominantly western (western-minded? US-minded?) english fandom leans towards that more to the point of ignoring details dispelling it that have been further added

the changes are quite minor for me personally. the most significant one for me is probs the lan parents stuff, but it just allows me to eliminate other interpretations i've had.

the thing is, contrary to popular belief, the lan aren't particularly harsh people. they have their rules and they follow them but they dont impose them outside of their clan unless u are a guest within their premises. (guests also have different rules as they get given a gew warnings before getting punished if they break a rule). and even within their clan, they aren't weary of each other. wwx notes how the cold springs where people bathe naked arent guarded because no one would take advantage of that sort of situation. lqr always bends to his nephews' will. and now we also know that the lan elders eventually bent to madame lan, she seemingly was free to come and go. and as stated by others, if she could kill a lan master, she could definitely find a way out if she really were held in the cloud recesses against her will.

so, since mxtx already confirmed that the lan parents were in love, i would go as far as to say that the "imprisonment" had actually been a mutually agreed upon solution. like, just because u were the one to make the decision, doesn't mean it makes u happy or comfortable. just like wwx calling the burial mounds a prison of his own making

i know i was half-jokingly begging for the mdzs simplified cn to not be continued but actually, the first volume had no changes so ppl speculate that mxtx must've fought hard for it to not be censored or altered. i trust that if mdzs does get a simplified cn, mxtx will make sure to stay true to her vision of the story as much as possible

Hi Panda, would you happen to know what the Chinese fandom consensus on Madam Lan's backstory is? The consensus in English fandom seems to be that she was a victim of the Lan sect & abused by Qinheng-jun, but before I saw that I thought her and Qinheng-jun and the Lan sect had a misunderstanding, like wangxian in the cave vs the Lan elders after Nightless City, that sort of thing? The difference is so huge I need like an extra 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 50th opinion haha

Hi there! Mmn yes, it’s an interesting question, that part of the story is left ambiguous and led to a lot of speculation. I don’t think there’s really a consensus whether on the Chinese side or the international side. However, I’m not sure we can qualify what happened with Madam Lan and Wei Wuxian a misunderstanding. In my opinion, it’s more a difference of morality. What they did was justified from their perspective while in the eyes of others they have committed a grave crime.

Let’s look at the facts or at least what we assume to be facts.

I forgot an interesting interpretation that I’ve seen in the Chinese fandom, it was pointed out that the choice of the given names of the Two Jades of Gusu might suggest a reconciliation between Qingheng-Jun and Madam Lan.

涣 (huàn) - to dissipate, to dissolve, to vanish

湛 (zhàn) - crystal clear, limpid, deep

The choice of these names might be an indication that the grievances of the past were finally washed clean.

Just to come back to the point that the concept of gratitude and grudges as well as the blood debts they engender are ingrained in the setting, remember that Xiao Xingchen, a character renowned for being fair-minded, told Xue Yang that he should have stopped his revenge against the Yueyang Chang Sect by taking a finger for a finger. Or chopping off an arm at most (ch.41). It’s very much the sort of world in which ‘blood demands blood’. The amount of blood asked in return being proportional to the severity of the crime and the depth of the rancour. Jin Guangyao wiped out an entire Sect to avenge his dead son (ch.47). That wasn’t cruel, it was righteous. Revenge is not necessarily taken out of bloodthirstiness, it’s done as a moral obligation that often ties in with filial piety, it’s done to alleviate the deceased’s resentment at their untimely demise (leading to resentful energy here) so that they can finally rest in peace.

the narrative establishes that giving flowers was an expression of administration/affection/love so of course the gesture of madame lan leaving a flower in front of qhj's door is meant to be interpreted in alignment with this. especially because the scene at the gentian house is followed by a scene where wwx notices lwj's peony bookmark (the same peony wwx had tossed to lwj in the past with similar intentions even if he didn't fully understand why he did it). the narrative deliberately parallels wangxian with the lan parents (as it also does with wwx's parents). and it seems, much like the stories were wrong for their assumptions that wangxian were archenemies, they were also wrong about the nature of madame lan and qhj's relationship
