please don’t feed any birds bread or bread products, not just ducks. First of all, it’s bad for them nutritionally in general, but it can cause some serious, life-threatening problems for young birds, including but not limited to a condition called Angel Wing, wherein a bird’s growing wing bones twist out at the tips and make it impossible for them to fly as adults. This leaves them vulnerable to predators and can strand migratory birds, condemning them to death.
Aside from nutritional problems, when bread gets wet it can swell and cause an impacted crop, which can slow or sour their entire digestive system, an affliction that can kill them. And, very importantly, birds are exceptionally sensitive to a lot of molds that grow in/on bread, even ones that aren’t visually obvious or harmful to humans, and can die from even small exposures to certain types.
please please please, do not feed birds bread.
Treats birds enjoy and that are good for them: whole oats (w/o salt), leafy greens (iceberg/romaine lettuce aren’t great… kale, mustard greens, spinach, dandelion greens are all great leafy greens tho), defrosted frozen peas (again, w/o salt), bird seed, most types of squash, blueberries, mealworms, cracked corn (whole corn is not great for most birds), and baked + crushed eggshells. Most fruits and vegetables are okay. Ronzoni’s Supergreens pasta is okay. There is debate about dry cat food, we feed it but use a high quality brand.
Other things which are bad for birds: avocados (toxic), chocolate (toxic), mushrooms, peanuts (have toxins), anything with red 40 in it, anything salty, popcorn, crackers, potato skins (toxic), any milk product (birds have no way to process lactose), white pasta, rice.
