The more I look at animals, the more I realize people are just animals too.

I see people in domestic animals vs shelter or wild animals. Domestic animals that were raised in good conditions often take things for granted. They will turn their nose up to things, demand to have more of something (petting, play, food), and tend to be lazy when given difficult tasks.

Rescued or wild animals given good treatment after having a time of hardship tend to show more gratitude, savor the gifts given to them, show respect, and are much more observant and quick to work on a difficult task.

Obviously, there are always outliers, but I’ve seen it in mammals to birds to fish to insects. How strange it is to be called intelligent when surely most things in the world could easily step up to the plate. How simple and wild we really are.

I walk out in the world to see what is happening with people. I alter my walk to appear more masculine. That’s what I believe people normally do. I see a trans woman being treated poorly in public. I approach and announce myself to be a trans woman too, in hopes to scare them away. Outrage ensues, as the other people argue how terrible I am.

They call me he.

I watch as people come to defend me.

They call me she.

In a quick way I have turned friends into foes and foes into allies. I watch in a neutral, almost bored way. I sip my drink mindlessly as I leave. I make chaos out of neighbors again, deepening the cavern that divides us. But I’ve caught a glimpse of something I’ll never see again.

They called me he.

I slip back into the background, feeling satisfied with my lesson.

And within seconds.

These Reese’s Pieces are the only friends in this room with me. My notebook and paper suffer with me in this endeavor. My computer wants me dead. The bland chapters I have to read are my Devil. This assignment was made for my personal hell.

But the true evil behind this is the fact that I had all week to work on this and only did it the day it was due. I create my own hell better than any god could imagine.
