part of the reason I'm desperate for a sequel to Sir Cameron is that I think, on its own, you don't have everything you need to understand the ending. but it sets up SUCH fun stuff for book 2. like the major misunderstanding I've seen is [heavy spoilers under readmore]

people thinking that the sorcerer is a thousand years old. he's ~59-ish. in the prologue he's described as looking like a young man, and then in the 40 year flash forward he's described as looking haggard and old, but maybe that was too subtle a description of aging?

I think the confusing factor is the ending, when the villain on the game's cover art looks like Merulo - people thought he must have been made when the world was transformed, but actually what it means is that certain archetypes from the game have been pushed on various people, generation by generation, since the world's transformation. which is something I realllllllly want to explore in book 2. especially since magic is spreading through the universe now and infecting the moon and mars. like, will another "mad sorcerer" pop up? who can say??

(I can, and the answer is yes, hehehehhehehehehhehehehhe)

Ah, that wasn't necessarily the confounding factor for me.

I think it was this chunk that actually made me feel like he was older than the stated timeline:

In particular, there’s something particularly world-weary about this moment; it feels like a “I’ve been watching the world for hundreds of years and no one has stepped up in all that time, so eventually I had to.”

But there's also the fact that he is not ever described as young in the prologue. He's described as having a pinched, weaselly face, as lanky and tall, as having thin lips, but none of it is particularly indicative of him being young, aside from his voice breaking once, especially since all the descriptions are more-or-less in line with how Cameron describes him later.

I knew he was definitely younger than the 1000 years, since he'd been hatched after the cataclysm, but there wasn't enough data to conclude that he was super young in the prologue.

(Though re-reading the prologue with the knowledge that he's 19 is. well. this is a very 19-year-old thing to do, huh.)

ahhhhhhhhh (screaming forever). I guess if I'd known ahead of time that there would be confusion, I'd have kept that + added a couple more descriptors of him being young. but you're right, as it is now there's basically no way to know.

as for the "it's been 1000 years", I know that he just means in general, but with all the other factors I can totally see why that's slipping people up.

Oh, fun! It never occurred to me to question Merulo’s age (I’d placed him at about 80-150 for some reason), I think in large part because

I’ve read a lot of dragon books where dragons are either some flavour of immortal or have very long life spans. I wouldn’t say it’s standard in fantasy but I’m so primed to expect it that I think I’d be more confused to see a dragon with a human lifespan than not.

thank you for giving me a chance to autistically detail the biologies of the different fantasy races, because:

dragons and elves have roughly the same lifespans in this world, but elves age slowly, whereas dragons reach maturity much faster and then they just........stay there.

so Merulo and Hydna are the same age, but Hydna is healthy (so she looks somewhere in her thirties) and Merulo is a complete and utter wreck (so he looks, basically, his age).

meanwhile Domitia is a half elf, but has aged like a dragon. so she's maybe 5 years younger than Hydna and Merulo, but she also looks mid-thirties. which means, in elf terms, she's a fake milf. any elf looking at her would think she's like a hundred. she faked out Glenda so hard at the harvest festival and got her all flustered, when really they were the same age.

BUT BASICALLY THE WHOLE BOOK IS TOLD FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN IDIOT WHO DOESN'T KNOW SHIT AND HAS ZERO CURIOSITY! so it's hard to find somewhere to exposition this all organically. maybe in book 2

tl;dr elves and dragons have extended lifespans but different growth rates, and Domitia is stealing milf valour
