When Lorelei “Rory” Wolfe was five, her mother remarried and brought her to Riverfells, Louisiana. Her new step-family embraced her without hesitation, folding her into their lives as though she had always belonged. To Rory, it felt less like being absorbed into a new family and more like grafting a plant onto another one to create a whole new thing altogether.
What Rory didn’t realize was that her new family carried a secret. They were witches. Though they loved her as one of their own, they felt as though it would simply be safer if she wasn’t involved in this part of their lives. Quietly they wove protective wards around her, bending her perception away from the truth. For Rory, the oddities of Riverfells, the howls coming from the woods, the flicker of light in abandoned houses, the unsettling hush that sometimes fell over the town, never quite registered as a danger. A charm or a spell tugged her attention away, softened the edges of what she saw, and convinced her that this was simply the way things had always been.
Still, Rory was born curious. Even as a child, she was fascinated by the unexplained, asking too many questions and slipping into places she wasn’t necessarily supposed to be. When her parents’ answers fell short, she turned her to legends beyond her small town. By her teenage years, Rory enthralled herself with tales of Mothman, squonk, or lesser-known cryptids she found on obscure corners of the internet. What started as a hobby though became a passion and by her twenties, she created a podcast with a modest but loyal following. Funnily enough, the stories of blood-suckers and moon shifters were always less interesting than a hairy large footed creature occupying the pacific northwest. creature occupying the pacific northwest.
Now 27, Rory has grown just an adult version of her younger self. She’s the easy friend behind the counter at Cup of Life, pouring lattes by day, and by night she becomes the warm, curious voice spinning stories of the uncanny on her podcast.
But Riverfells is changing. “DO NOT LOOK IN THE WATER” seems to be plaguing her once simple home. The town elders whisper about disturbances in the balance of things. Rory believes she’s chasing the perfect cryptid mystery for her next episode, but her family knows better. The wards they cast to shield her all those years ago are faltering. For the first time in her life, the edges are slowly coming into focus. The strangeness she once overlooked is catching her eye.
