TLDR: If you practice witchcraft and/or are a pagan and also work with Mother Mary, Please DM me because I'm working on an art and research project and want to interview you.
Hello everyone! This post is a call for any type of witch, pagan, or other magical practitioner who works with Mother Mary.
I am working on an art research project about witchcraft, paganism, and Mother Mary and how/why people work with and connect to her in their magical practice. So weather you work just with Her, Her and other deities, or have some sort of syncretistic situation, I would love to hear all about it for my project. Also please reblog this so I can reach as many potential interview subjects as possible
(description under the cut bc I don't want to clog up anyone's feed with the project description)
The project: I will be casting Mary statues out of plaster and then decorating them to go with a matching mini altar based on the different ways people I talk to work with Her. I will then be writing a paper about the experience of creating this and the subject of the work.
If you decide to contact me, I will generally be asking about your history with Christianity, your methods and procedures with worship/working with her, if you incorporate other deities into your practice, and other information about your practice. You can give as much or as little information as you want. I will ask if I can directly quote our conversation in my paper, if you are uncomfortable with this and do not want to be quoted or want your quotes to be anonymous, that it completely ok. You do not need to be comfortable being quoted to participate. I am looking to publish this paper in an academic journal (if they'll take me) or on it's own public website so keep that in mind.
I am looking for personal experiences and personal gnosis! You do not need to be some sort of expert in Mariology or paganism or witchcraft!
We will first talk over tumblr to make sure you qualify for this study and then move on to a Zoom interview if you are comfortable with that or email interview (email because it is a better medium for longer responses and easier to cite and look back on than social media chats)
Thank your for reading to the end and entertaining my crazy project idea. Please message me if you would like to participate and if you know someone who might by interested please send this to them.
I’m not Catholic but I have to admit it feels surreal to see people in my commie orgs debate whether or not to check out Catholicism because for the past two popes they have been focused on social justice.
And I’m just sitting here like “yes. I told you. That’s Jesus’ thing.”
Anyways I’ve just got a feeling we are about to see a rise in social Justice Catholics.
PSA: Don’t use Hallow, it’s run by conservative white supremacists, is probably selling your data, and runs off celebrity culture rather than actual faith. There are other (better) apps to use, or go the old fashioned way and use books/websites/make your own resources.
May I ask how you worship? I’m really considering getting into folk Catholicism but I’m not sure exactly how worship works. I understand that it will be different and unique for each individual but I’m still looking for inspiration regardless until I find my own footing and discover what works best for me.
Thank you!
One overarching recommendation: Folk Catholicism is based in the folk—as in the people you come from, the people around you, and your own circumstances. Thus, I recommend turning to your ancestors and your surroundings, look at what they did/do, and see if you can incorporate that. Obviously bearing in mind closed practices and respect. That’s what I did/am doing bc it’s a constant lifelong process of learning.
To answer your question: it varies. Part of it is traditional—I attend mass, I pray rosaries and chaplets and novenas, I light candles and wear Saint medals and have prayer cards. I have third class relics (shoutout DNJC on Etsy and online). Part of it is syncretic—I incorporate folk healing, I use incense and tarot, I practice ancestor veneration, I venerate folk saints like La Santa Muerte. I aim to reconnect with my heritages and the diaspora of those cultures.
On a regular day to day, I pray, I leave offerings of water and light occasional candles, sometimes I will walk to the nearby cathedral or one of the various parishes around me and sit there with the Eucharist and feel God’s presence. I have devotional artwork (shoutout @and-her-saints) and so many rosaries and crosses around my room that my girlfriend likes to joke that all she can see is Jesus when she walks in. I read my Bible, or works by the saints, or other books related to my faith and practice. I watch and listen to other folk Catholics (highly recommend Frankie Castanea aka Chaotic Witch Aunt, who has a lovely book on ancestor veneration that just came out). I sit with God. I write. I wrestle with the divine. I go out in nature, and commune with creation. I listen to devotional music. I commune with others. I care for those around me, especially those in need. Love, too, is devotion and worship.
I was raised Catholic but I don’t identify as a Catholic anymore with one notable exception: when weird Trad Catholics online are claiming normal Catholic shit is like out of this world.
Ooooo the pope blessed some water! What pagan thing will he do next: claim we should feed the hungry and love our neighbor!? Give shelter to the unhoused? Oh the horror!
Anyway petition to call trad Catholics what they actually are: Catholic weebs.
So, this post has been in the works for quite a while. I have contemplated making this post vs not making it, but with the amount of times I happen to repeat all this information anytime somebody asks for advice on how to improve their clairsenses, I figured I'd just make a big post for myself and others to refer to when needed. It also serves as a way for me to solidify a theory I've had about clairsenses for quite a while, so there goes two birds.
I want to preface this by saying that I am by no means an expert, and that this is just a theory in the works that makes the most sense for my experiences and what I've seen others experience. This theory makes learning any other clairsense so much easier in so many peoples' experiences (because I have shared it with many people and they have confirmed that it helps), but I am no scientist or expert. While I highly recommend using this theory in your practice to develop your clairsenses, in the event that it does not work for you, that is okay. But like I said, I strongly recommend it.
With that out of the way, let's get started.
First off, what are clairsenses?
Clairsenses are, by extension, similar to the 'sixth sense' concept. They are extra senses that correspond with the 5 senses we already have, but they operate on a different 'plane'. Most people use them to reach beyond the veil and into the beyond, whether that be with ghosts, spirits, deities, or anything else. Each clair operates like a radio frequency where you can tune into one or more to receive information.
There are different types of clairsenses, each of them pertaining to the 5 senses that we already have. So there is clairvoyance, pertaining to sight, and clairaudience, pertaining to hearing, and so on.
There are many theories about how clairsenses even work, but for the sake of my theory, we will go with: clairsenses are extra senses that help the individual process energy from a different plane of being through sensory filters.
A common phenomenon in clairsenses is that some people happen to be naturally good at one or more type of clairsense. I will address this later in my theory.
So, by the definition of clairsenses are extra senses that help the individual process energy from a different plane of being through sensory filters, the question that inspired this theory and this post is, how can I develop clairsenses? Everyone has the ability to do so, but just how?
In short, my theory is that clairsentience is the base and foundation of every clairsense, and to learn any clairsense, it's much easier to start by learning and mastering clairsentience.
In accordance with my definition, clairsentience is the clair that allows an individual to be aware of any surrounding energies. You cannot necessarily see, or hear, or taste, or touch, but you know it is there. Clairsentience is often the most common clairsense that many people don't actually know they have.
It all boils down to the fact that if you're able to "feel" the energies, then it's much easier to put them through a sensory filter. That's how it makes every other clair easier to learn. It's a bit of wordplay too—without being sentient, you cannot begin to process any other senses.
But Chrys, how are people born with clairsenses that they are naturally adept at without having clairsentience?
Clairsenses work like translation. I'll use clairaudience as an example here. You tune into the energy, and you begin to notice small fluctuations in the energy that are conveying a message. Upon understanding what that message is, it becomes easier to associate specific words with specific fluctuations. When you sharpen this ability, you can begin discerning a faint voice from it—one that you may not necessarily be physically hearing, but one that accompanies the energy every time it conveys a message to you. Over time, you'll begin to notice how specific energies use specific vocabulary and have their own speech patterns.
This is how I learned clairaudience by using clairsentience as a foundation, and it's how I've taught others to learn clairaudience as well.
When you are naturally born to be good at clairaudience, this entire process comes to you easily. You do not even have to think about translating; it is natural to you. To learn clairsentience for this person would still be like learning how to translate, because they did not even know what they were doing involved translating in the first place.
I'll admit, this part of my theory is definitely still a work in progress, but it makes sense to me in a way that's difficult to put into words, unfortunately.
We can use this theory to learn any clairsense we want, because it all boils down to clairsentience. When you can feel that energy, you can apply it through a sensory filter. Does this mean anyone who learned clairsenses a different way is wrong? Not at all! This is just like... a "hack", if you will. A shortcut.
I hope this helps! Feel free to send me any questions.
i keep religionposting on main and for that i am minimally sorry but if you want a mildly fun anecdote, when i was a sixth grader in catholic school there was a kid in my class who kept asking our teacher why dinosaurs weren't in the bible (his family wasn't religious) and i think he expected her to give some roundabout avoidant non answer. but because my sixth grade religion teacher was an icon and a proper catholic who taught the only version of the old testament i ever knew, she was like "because this isn't a history book or a biology book. it's a collection of stories to teach us about the Lord. and He and the people telling these stories didn't need dinosaurs to do the teaching." and ngl i think about that constantly especially when biblical literalists and/or creationists start making the internet rounds again.
“christianity is incompatible with paganism and witchcraft” the church agrees! Fortunately for me, I do not care for religious authority, whether Christian nor pagan. I will continue to venerate and petition saints and I will continue to syncretize Jesus with Helios. Sorry not sorry
Fun fact: in parts of Europe like Germany and Poland, the Virgin Mary was often depicted alongside frogs and toads. Frogs were seen as protectors of mothers and newborns, and often depictions of Mary with frogs or the placement of frog shaped tokens at an altar/statue were seen to grant protection in all cases involving birth and motherhood. Our Lady of Frogs is a folk title often connected to the Holy Virgin.
