(wo)manorial's ninth online exhibition, Table Manners is now live!
(wo)manorial serves up a feast for the eyes in their ninth online exhibition, Table Manners, a survey of food and dining in contemporary art practice. Through a playful use of Emily Post wisdom, the exhibition links to the feminine history of domesticity and the cultivation of etiquette as a vehicle of feminine power and education under the strict guides of patriarchy. Blending traditional etiquette advice and contemporary artworks offers a light-hearted contemplation of the difference between traditional and contemporary relations to food. Works by Haley Kattner Allen, Lindsey Allgood, Zeren Badar, Dan Bannino, Stefani Bardin, Anna Barlow, Josh Bricker, Laura Lee Brott, Ayrton Chapman, Colette Copeland, Hugo de Kok & Kay van Vree, Andy Ellison, Alice Gosti, Ellie Harrison, Jessica Iannuzzi Garcia, JxMarie, Darya Koltsova, Alisa Lapidus & Natasha Subramaniam, Sarah Lasater, Jessica Negrete, Gabriela Ochoa, Klaus Pichler, Lee Price, Lauren Purnell, Caitlin Rueter & Suzanne Stroebe, Crystal Smith, Allison Starr, Emily van der Harten, Sarah Anne Ward, Dennis Wojtkiewicz, and ZAPP contributors.
Table Manners will be held in conjunction with the release of Xenographic 3 from the Seattle-based non-profit ZAPP. The third installment of Xenographic will focus on all things food with contributions from ZAPP supporters and (wo)manorialists. Xenographic 3 is set to make its digital debut on womanorial.com, and will make its physical debut at Seattle’s ShortRun festival this November with proceeds going towards funding for a new space for the zine archive. ZAPP, Zine Archive and Publishing Project, is committed to the preservation of zines and the practice of self-publishing.
Table Manners is the first solo curatorial project from (wo)manorialist, Gabriela Ochoa.
inside)(outside
… that gender is a choice, or that gender is a role, or that gender is a construction that one puts on, as one puts on clothes in the morning, that there is a ‘one’ who is prior to this gender, a one who goes to the wardrobe of gender and decides with deliberation which gender it will be today.
– Judith Butler, Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity
inside)(outside, curated by Dallas based group PerformanceSW, displays collected ephemera from artists exploring the inbetween in performance. The works included will challenge representations of performance art to the everyday, comparative to the performativity of gender roles. Both displays call for the construction of invisible boundaries.
