Dr. Mae Jemison Quote
I admire her!She is a pro snowboarder and skater. She lost her legs and still does what she loves the most…such a strong person. And we are just weeping around about stupid stuff.I’m ashamed of myself.
We’re celebrating #TeamUSA on this weekend’s edition of #DiscoverAmerica! Join us! Amy Purdy is a champion for the ages, and we know that both children and adults consider look to her as a role model.
Amy started snowboarding as a teenager, but contracted bacterial meningitis at 19 which caused her to lose two organs and both legs below the knees. She taught herself how to snowboard again and became a three-time World cup gold medalist in adaptive snowboarding!
Cheer on #TeamUSA with us as we continue our #DiscoverAmerica Olympics edition!
"Our imaginations can be used as tools for breaking through borders. Because in our minds, we can do anything. And we can be anything. It’s believing in those dreams and facing our fears head on that allows us to live our lives beyond our limits."

Ruby Hirose 1904- 1960
As a biochemist and bacteriologist, Ruby was an American doctor who researched serums and antitoxins. She is among the 10 women recognized for her contributions to chemistry by the American Chemical Society.Ruby suffered from hay fever, and did a lot of research for that ailment. She also studied and did substantial research on pollens and allergens and made major contributions to the development of vaccines for infant paralysis.
Because of their Japanese ancestry, Ruby’s family was put in an American internment camp during World War II. Luckily, Ruby escaped this fate because she was in Ohio at the time of Japanese imprisonment, allowing her to continue her studies in chemistry.

Researchers have performed what they believe is the first noninvasive human-to-human brain interface, with one researcher able to send a brain signal via the Internet to control the hand motions of a fellow researcher. University of Washington University of Washington researcher Rajesh Rao, left, plays a computer game with his mind. Across campus, researcher Andrea Stocco, right, wears a magnetic stimulation coil over the left motor cortex region of his brain. Stocco’s right index finger moved involuntarily to hit the “fire” button as part of the first human brain-to-brain interface demonstration. (Credit: Image courtesy of University of Washington)
