~다 vs. ~고 vs. ~아/어 보니(까)!

A lot of people get these three (annoyingly similar) grammar patterns mixed up, so I’m here to clarify their nuanced differences! Hope this helps~

~다 보니(까) – to discover/realize something after doing an action repeatedly/continuously.

한국어를 공부하다 보니까 실력이 많이 늘었다. 카페에서 친구랑 이야기를 하다 보니 벌써 문 닫는 시간이 돼 버렸어요. 한국에서 몇 년동안 혼자 살다 보니까 꽤 외롭더라고.

~고 보니(까) – to discover/realize something (usually unexpected) after completing an action.

집을 사고 보니 낡고 고장이 난 곳이 되게 많았다. 아이를 낳고 보니까 부모님 마음이 이해가 돼. 그 말을 듣고 보니 제가 큰 실수를 한 것 같아요.

~아/어 보니(까) – to discover/realize something after trying an action (for the first time).

카페에서 공부해 보니까 집중할 수 없었다. 김밥을 직접 만들어 보니 아주 쉽더라고요. 새벽에 일어나서 한강에서 조깅해 보니까 제법 추웠어.

how to differentiate between 배우= actor/actress & 배우=learn? is it based on the context?

배우 is actress/actor.배우다 is to learn.

You can tell by how 배우다 is conjugated and the particle that follows 배우.

Korean Grammar - 아/어/여지다 - to become “adjective”

Today we want to look at how you can say to become „Adjective“. This pattern is used to describe the change of a state - a really easy and very useful expression so let’s look at how to use it.

As said before this pattern is used to express a change of a state so you use it with adjectives! When using present tense the change isn’t completed like „The weather become better.“ (It’s not the best it could be but it’s changing towars the better state) When using the past tense you say that it’s already reached the new state „The weather became better (yesterday it was bad, but now it’s better.) And of course in the future tense you say or assume that it will be in a certain state soon „The weather will be better tomorrow.“ You can use 더 (= more) but it seemed like this is dropped often.

grammar / 문법

First you need to know the simple conjugation rules.

Quick Review • the last syllable of the verb stem contains the vowels ㅗ or ㅏ: +아 • the last syllable contains not the vowels ㅗ or ㅏ: +어 • the last syllable of the verb stem contains the vowel 이: -여  • 하다 verbs: 해

When the stems ends with 오 it’s ofter contracted to 와. Of course there are irregular verbs/adjectives. 

After the basic conjugation you just need to add 지다 (without a space).

춥다 - 추워지다크다  커지다좋다 - 좋아지 이상하다 - 이상해지다

The last step is to just conjugate the new word. (i will use 존댓말)

• past tense: 졌어요 • present tense: 져요 • future tense: 질 거예요

You can also say something like „I want to become…adjective“ with this pattern and the ending -고 싶다. The full pattern would be 아/어/여지고 싶다.
