Did he almost just yell at an injured war hero about dirt? Thank God there were no cameras in the Sanctum that were filming any of this. Imagine the negative social media! How could he ever show his face in public, much less earn some money to keep the electricity and water running in the Sanctum after that?!

Wong took a few shallow breaths, forcing himself to remember his manners and composure.

“N-No need. I’ll get it cleaned and send Stark the bill.” OK maybe he still had to work on the manners and composure thing. 

“Um...did Stephen offer you a drink or anything?” Manners. A true work in progress.

“Hardly. I’m just old fashioned.” And paranoid, but that wasn’t something she was going to indulge a stranger in. “Yes. An idiot white boy named Stephen. He’s thirty minutes late.” There was a little bristle in her words and she let out another little huff. 

“Did you just say an idiot white boy name Stephen?” Wong almost dropped his bag. By the Vishanti! Why would Stephen invite someone so close to the sanctum and not tell Wong? More importantly: why was he late?

“I actually know a guy that fits the bill. Was there any reason why you’re meeting up with him?”

“I mean… yeah. No, you’re right about that. I have an even worse track record with my laundry than I do with tentacles and that is… saying a lot,” he granted, scratching at the back of his neck.

“How you managed to make it to your age is beyond me sometimes.” He placed a hand against his hip, his frown threatening to turn into an almost smile. By the Vishanti, look at them getting along! 

“Speaking of tentacles, I’m making calamari tonight. You will eat them. Or starve.”

“I was not screaming. I was being STERN with the laundry.” Wong straightened his shoulders. “And you won’t need to help me, Stephen. Everytime you help, I end up repairing walls.”

No, Ross wasn’t an expert in antiques, not especially in Chinese artifacts—–he was simply reading off the label underneath the glass case of the costume of a concubine in said era. Not to mention he wasn’t even here for the Asian exhibit; it was the African exhibit in the adjacent hall which he was more intrigued by.

        “Sorry, I need everyone to clear out of the museum. You heard         it on the PA system.”

“Who are you again?” 

Wong kept his hands shoved into the pocket of his hoodie, eying the bossy American with what he hoped was a neutral gaze, though sometimes the contempt he held for certain kinds of Americans (read: suited and white) tended to bleed though despite his best efforts.

He too was not exactly in the museum for what they were mutually pretending to examine. No, he was there to investigate a misplaced mystical artifact and it seemed America was going to get in the way.

Typical.

“You say that as if you do your own laundry.” There was no resentment in Wong’s tone, just teasing. “Speaking of laundry, should I wait incase you end up in another tentacle and slime-filled dimension tomorrow?”

After the initial ‘mishap’ with one of the infinity stones Taneleer had lost quite a bit of his work but with construction working on main parts of Knowhere he was sure to rebuild. His eyes briefly glanced the path his visitor looked in and followed it to a particular mouthy piece of his ‘collection’.  “I enjoy gathering rarities.” Rather dead-pan about it Taneleer turned his focus back to his guest.  “Have you come to bargain?”

“Uh...” 

He forced his eyes away from the duck in the suit to look back at the big guy. What was that stripe on his chin? What was with his whole look? Wong needed to step back far, far away. Maybe into another dimension? Maybe the dimension with his ex--OK, maybe not that dimension. At least the guy had colour-coordination, so he shouldn’t be too bad...right?

“Depends, sir. I somehow think I won’t be getting a very good deal around here...no offense.” Leave it to his mouth to run on ahead before he could say something halfway intelligent and make a quick break.

“I must admit it is not everyday someone who practices an art quite like yours stumbles upon myself.” Taneleer wasn’t foreign to magic nor the practice thereof but it wasn’t often those who possessed the skill entertained him with their presence for more than a minute or so; Especially not if said presence was mostly unannounced.

May his ancestors preserve him. Wong glanced down at the guandao he still hadn’t put away, making sure not to let the blade touch any of the multiple displays that cluttered the space he found himself in...which was definitely not Earth (though could he still be in the correct dimension or reality? Wong didn’t feel too funny, so maybe he was).

“Sorry, I think I took a wrong turn. Nice...collection.” Was that a duck in a suit?

tbh Wong has a long-running list of the Sins Stephen has committed against the Sanctum and one day it is going to bite Stephen in the ass
