the eternal torment of simultaneously wanting coffee (a little treat) and yearning to go back to bed
which long hair hairstyle fits the academia asthetic the most? a pony tail or half up half down?
the academia-aesthetics and hair 🗝️
(based on my opinion and view of the aesthetics)
🦢 LIGHT ACADEMIA the half up half down - optionally accessorized with small bows or subtle jewelry pieces, very feminine and practical, sooo many pretty variations
🎻 DARK ACADEMIA the pony tail/braids - all neatly brushed with just maybe a few intentional strands in the front loose, placed low or in the middle of the back of the head, yes to braids but no pigtails or extravagant (e.g. bridal) styles
🪐 CHAOTIC ACADEMIA the "messy bun" - hair just loosely tied or held up by a pencil for the slightly disheveled/distracted look, totally fine if half of it is falling out! works best if you don't even have a mirror, literally just throw it all together
☕️ CLASSIC ACADEMIA open - optionally accessorized with a matching head band or hair clips to keep the face free, goes with nearly every outfit (but maybe bring a brush lol)
me whenever I loose sleep due to (an admittedly unnecessary amount of) procrastination:
yaaaas this is so chaotic academia of me rn 😻
november is frosty fingers and red cheeks, burnt coffee with cream, small books that fit in back pockets, old penny loafers, letting candles burn down to the nub, tucking long hair into turtlenecks, warm vanilla perfume, an thick plaid scarf and a wool down coat, cracked knuckles, a broken wrist watch

so i'm in the middle of a dead poets society breakdown/spiral/hyperfixation/etc, and something I really love about the movie is how nothing changes, if that makes sense. it's a story about a system, and it says, "this is the system. this is who it hurts. the end." there's no happy ending. there's no fix. the characters are left broken by the corruption around them, and by the time someone stands up for what's right, it's too late, the damage has been done, the people have been hurt, and nothing can undo it.
i think that's what i find so fascinating about it. in a lot of modern movies and tv shows, when confronting conformity and the systems that perpetuate it, tear it down somehow. we watch history be made. dead poets society isn't history. nothing astronomical happened, truly—it's just a blip in time, a sequence of short events that really weren't important to anyone or anything. it won't be in any history books. no one will remember it fifty, sixty years down the line.
but it happened. and it mattered. and now that you know, now that you've been warned, it's time for you to make history:)
just saw someone with the account name "Hannibal Corpse" complain about the aesthetic nuisance of publicly parked cars under an online article with SUCH eloquence... oh so very on brand!

art restoration (rant)
I think my career path has always been destined to go into the art and history branch. And because hands-on work is so much more fulfilling for me than desk type, restoration of historical objects - be it paintings, murals, furniture etc. - the idea of studying to be an art restorator/conservator was one I've been entertaining for a long time.
HOWEVER
To even apply for a college course is an insane process. You might think they're vetting you for a course in medicine!
A 10-month internship in the field (usually unpaid) together with a detailed report. Then an application portfolio with 15 works, to be turned in digitally AND physically. And on top of that, you have to pass an array of short exams:
- Test in the field of art and cultural history (written, 45 minutes) - Test in the field of natural sciences (written, 45 minutes) - Test in the field of conservation of art and cultural assets (written, 45 minutes) - Picture description (written, 45 minutes) - colored drawing based on a model (practical, 120 minutes) - Test of manual skill (practical, 120 minutes) - Test of color integration ability (practical, 120 minutes) - Final interview (oral, 20 minutes, weighting 4-fold)
Basically you'll need a degree before you're even considered a student there?? /hj
This is not to complain about the intesity of the application process. I understand that this is a highly sought after, difficult field of work, where one has to have an incredible amount of skill and expertise. Of course.
My problem lies here: the accessibility is almost out of reach for a mere mortal like me. Wealthy people can afford to do an internship somewhere for nearly a whole year - the rest of the population cannot. Not to mention the fact that this particular course of study spans 5 years, during which there is certainly little or no time for even a mini job. Also one would have to move to a fairly big city with a high rent.
This profession seems to be reserved for the privileged
Personally, I would need at least 6 months to:
create a portfolio
study and practise for these exams
pack my life up and move (with the risk of failing the application process)
Getting accepted and finishing that degree would be a Dream Come True! But I'm not yet 100% sure of my chances or capabilities to succed. Bottom line: it's intimidating.
...
If you read all this, let me know if you've ever felt the same way about your own academic path and how you handled it. I'd appreciate it!
Places in which peace reigns
'I was very fond of Basil,' said Dorian, with a note of sadness in his voice.
"The Picture of Dorian Gray" - Oscar Wilde
"If you retort me with some very simple case which makes me out a stupid animal, I think I must do how the Sphinx did..."
– Prof. De Morgan in his letter to Sir W. R. Hamilton, 1852
my idea of death is just... nothingness. it's both comforting and frightening at once
