Hello Wordgirl fandom! Welcome to Wordgirl: Exploration!
What's Wordgirl: Exploration?
Wordgirl: Exploration is a fan reboot inspired by Wordgirl: Rewired. It takes place when Becky/Wordgirl is 12, but also follows a loose continuity. For the most part, anything that happened in the show canonically happened in our project, but there are a few changes or straight up retcons we've made regarding episodes, characterization choices, and even what the characters look like! As for the goal of this reboot; we just wanted to make our own continuation of the show while also exploring potential character arcs and plot ideas. Hence the name ;).
How will Wordgirl: Exploration be shared?
"Episodes" will be shared onto the blog now, instead of ao3 like originally planned. They will be taking a more comic style approach, but with breaks of written story between images.
Who's behind Wordgirl: Exploration?
Currently, the team consists of four individuals: Raven, Ale, Robin, and Snowy.
Raven (they/xe/he) handles most of the writing and is the one spearheading the project. They've been a fan of the show since middle school and recently got sucked back in. Any posts or asks answered by them will be tagged with #Raven Rambles.
Ale (baa/it/he) does most of the art and writing editor. He recently got into the show thanks to Raven. Any posts or asks answered by him will be tagged with #Ale Announces and #Ale Art.
Robin (she/her) is the person Ale and Raven bounce ideas off of and the one who suggests how to handle characterization. She's our support team member :). Robin is Raven's younger sister and therefore has been dragged into the fandom by them since day 1. Any posts or asks answered by her will be tagged with #Robin Reports.
Snowy (they/he/it) is a co-writer, and also an editor for the project. They were brought into the show by Raven and Ale, and has been a long time friend of the crew. Any posts or asks answered will be tagged #Snowy Screams.
And that's all we'll share on this post for now! Feel free to send us questions! We're very excited to work on this reboot and share it with the fandom!

Two-Brains: Dr. Two Brains used to be a man by the name of Professor Steven Boxleitner, a kind and silly scientist who acted as a mentor to the young superheroine, WordGirl. However, after an accident fusing him to an evil mouse, named Squeaky, he became a cheese obsessed supervillain, dubbing himself Dr. Two Brains. At first he actually seemed to struggle between his old personality and his new one. Having conversations with himself where he tried to stop himself from committing crimes, similarly to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but was unable to fight his new cheese stealing nature. A later episode reveals that the mouse he fused with is still its own identity but Steven Boxleitner has been completely overwritten by this new fused personality. He still retains at least a few of his memories as Steven Boxleitner though, as he and the titular superheroine often reminisce on their past. With even a few hints that he'd like return to normal again but can't. Another scientist character has even offered to remove the mouse brain that made him evil to begin with, and even though he claims to want to keep it, another episode later in the series says the fusion is permanent. Finally, we don't know much about how his relationships have changed, but he DOES have a family. A niece was brought up in one of his episodes, and apparently he attended her graduation as Dr. Two Brains. His apprentice and colleges aren't the only ones affected by his transformation, we just don't know how his family took the news. Though it should be noted they're almost never brought up...
Come on everyone! Vote for Dr. Two-Brains! We have to at least get him past round one! He's THE traumatized villain of the series!
The man he used to be is GONE! Completely replaced with the new evil scientist persona! His whole LIFE is being controlled by an evil mouse! Any passions he used to have have been replaced with cheese! Because of a mouse! Which I should reiterate from the trauma section: the mouse is still his own entity! He can gain more control!
And if the actual trauma isn't enough, he's EXTREMELY queer. Dude flirts with EVERYONE. He just can't be normal about team ups with his fellow villains!

WordGirl/Becky Botsford (WordGirl) vs Abed Nadir (Community)
Who is the better fourth wall breaker?
WordGirl/Becky Botsford
Abed Nadir

Propaganda for each character below the cut. May include spoilers!
WordGirl/Becky Botsford
she literally talks to the narrator regularly. she stopped a scene transition once i think
Abed Nadir
often talks about his life as if it's a tv show, acknowledges tv tropes and plot structures as they're happening around him
It happens so many times. How do I even start. Some of the episodes are shot in a hand-held camera and are his cinema studies' homework but that barely counts. He refers to weeks as "episodes" and years as "seasons", including saying stuff like "we leaned pretty heavily on my character arc/character gimmick last episode, so I thought I could lay off for a while". At some point he also has to divide his group of friends into pairs and says he paired them off on multiple criteria, including school results, personality compatibility, *glance at camera* appeal to the audience, etc.
There are also plenty of times where his point of view changes the episode. While he's not necessarily the main character of the show, there's one episode where he says "how about we made this an homage episode to mafia movies" (or smth along those lines) and the episode immediately starts being shot in Goodfellas style with voiceovers, shots and camera speed in the style of mafia movies, etc. When he has a breakdown, the entire episode is in claymation (episode which is referenced by other characters, in and out of it, as 'that one time abed thought we were claymation', since the other characters think they are still normal/live action).
I might be forgetting some honestly. He is iconic.

Niko
Niko directly talks to the player for all of the game by their system name. The fourth wall basically doesn't exist in Oneshot 😭
The World Machine/The Entity
The entire game is a fourth wall break.
But really, this character is the game/program itself. They will speak directly to the player, referring to them BY NAME(the name on your computer), sometimes via actual popup windows or txt files.
The fourth wall is in smithreens by the time the game is over. There is no fourth wall anymore.
Wordgirl/Becky Botsford

Accord
She moves and narrates the moves between different timelines to try and find one where the Flower is defeated. Accord also stares directly at the camera and thanks the player for playing in the post credits scene.
Learning how to draw digitally and also unlearn the bad habit of thinking my art sucks. So! After 2.5 attempts I've drawn a Tobey I'm actually really proud of!
Hello everyone! Normally I'd say this would be a message from the Exploration Team, but it's not! Not quite! Heya folks, the small band here's gotten a new member! Feel free to call me Snowy (they/he/it), and I'm hijacking this post! I'm an old friend of Ale's, and an even longer friend of Raven and Robin! For awhile, I was just dragged along for the WordGirl ride until I really got into it, and I joined the Exploration team very recently! I'll be working as another writer, as well as an editor for the crew, and any of my posts or responses to asks will be tagged #snowy screams. I'm really glad to be here!
Another announcement for you guys; the team as a whole has decided to take a different approach to the publicization of Exploration than what was originally agreed upon. Instead of having to search through ao3 for the story, you guys are gonna have it posted right here, in your faces! It was originally meant to be mostly text-based, with a few images of scenes here and there. But, we're instead going to make it more like a comic. Not a full comic approach, mind you, but it'll lean more towards a more balanced mix. You'll get more visual scenes, but there will also still be a bit of text to go along with it. So we hope you guys look forward to it!
Not really an ask as much as a message?: I’m going to be honest, I don’t know who I denied from this team as a writer but I feel like I have to have missed the application or something??? Or there wasn’t an example attached or something because I LOVE you guys’s work, and I don’t think I’ve denied pretty much any application unless I couldn’t reach out due to invalid contact info or there wasn’t an example given??
TLDR if you’re still interested I would LOVE to have ya on the project!! Reboot homies gotta stick together!!! It’s likely that I didn’t want to deny you i just couldn’t reach out or didn’t have any examples at the time 😭😭😭
(Of course no issues if ya aren’t! Just wanted to reach out and offer!! ^v^)
Oh that was me! Raven! I never announced it but now's as good a time as any!
As of April 9th, I'm now officially a writer on WordGirl:Rewired!
I'm really excited to be working on both projects! It's a huge honor to be working on not just one, but TWO WordGirl reboots! Especially on the reboot that inspired Exploration!
What are twobrains’s pronouns? Is it just they/them or is there more?
What a perfect question to start off Pride Month!
Most people default to he/him when referring to Two-Brains. It's mostly out of habit as I'm sure it's common knowledge he used to be Professor Boxleitner. He's fine with this, because he doesn't care what pronouns people use for him. He's got more important, cheese related things to worry about than what pronouns people are using for him.
That said, they/them is considered the more suitable option after he/him. After all, there are technically, two of them. Squeaky especially likes it when people refer to Dr Two-Brains with they/them pronouns. It makes her feel acknowledged :).
In short: he/him is perfectly fine for Dr Two-Brains, but they/them makes them really happy.
First day of Pride Month! And What better way to celebrate than with some queer WordGirl headcanons!
WordGirl: Non-binary and bi. We latched onto some throw away lines so hard and we refuse to let go dfjkgh.
Captain Huggy Face: Pan and also Non-binary. His are purely vibes based.
Ms. Question: Transfemme Non-binary and bicurious. Again, just her vibes. We 100% chose bicurious instead of bi though because we thought it fit her question bit XD. (She's here cause I think she's neat <3)
Dr. Two-Brains: Pan and non-binary. No one is safe from his flirting. No one. Unlike the previous three, he's non-binary because we made squeaky a woman. Female mouse + male human = mouse man who's not really either anymore.
The Butcher: Bi, with a preference for women. Two-Brains isn't really his type.
Chuck the Evil Sandwich Making Guy: Trans, demiaroace, and pan! Robin is actually the one who came up with this headcanon! We agree with her <3. Chuck has strong pan vibes but he has even stronger demi vibes. Fun fact: his demi vibes were so strong we assigned him demi twice. We wrote down we thought he was demi, then a few weeks later we were watching a Chuck episode together and thought "wow, he's so demi. we should write down that headcanon". only to find out we already had hjdkg.
Violet: Omni. She didn't quite feel pan, so we went looking and found omni. It just so happens to go nicely with her outfit <3.
Scoops: Trans and bi. We started headcanoning Scoops as trans when we saw he was part of a scout troop, but was the only boy. Ale and I got really attached to the idea that it used to be a girl scout troop, but when Scoops transitioned his troop didn't want to kick him out. Now it's just a scout troop <3. He's bi because that's simply his vibes. He's even got a type; blondes with unusual eyes. Violet, Victoria, and Tobey all fall under this category.
Tobey McCallister: Demiboy and gray romantic. Technically speaking, I don't think Tobey is fully aware of either of these hdjfh. He insists he's cishet. However, I think he's a demiboy, and I think he's only attracted to WordGirl (and Becky). So he's here with his flags cause I wanted him to. Bonus: he's pouting cause he can't ride on one of his robits and therefore forced to walk on the ground with the other plebeians.
And of course! Every single one of these people are autistic. Both because they just are and also because I said so sdkljf. These are my comfort characters and I can project whatever I want on them.
art i drew after i remembered Bombay existed. as you know, i've been into wordgirl lately, and in wordgirl, there also happens to be a hero who shakes up the status quo and is hardly ever used: Kid Math!!
for my (@wordgirlexploration) lil wordgirl reboot, we thought it'd be funny if we had a silly, non-canon crossover with underdog. which extended: their weird second-heroes (NOT sidekicks, important) should meet up.
i think they'd get along! Bombay would tell Kid Math all kinds of crazy stories about things they totally did, and Kid Math would tell Bombay crazy stories about things he totally did, AND teach Bombay math!
WordGirl's still kinda embarrassed to have this flighty, easily-excitable kid around her, but Underdog knows she'll get used to it.
Oh my gosh- this project appeared on my dashboard and it was super cool to scroll through all the stuff you had going on for different characters! You guys have such cool ideas 😭 😭 😭
ALSO I’M SO MAD I DIDN’T THINK OF LESLIE LITTLE! CRAP SHOOT DARNIT FIDDLESTICKS IM IN LOVE WITH LESLIE LITTLE
It’s super flattering to think such a cool project was inspired by ours ❤️ ❤️ the way my jaw dropped when I found out you were inspired by Wordgirl: Rewiredx
good luck to you guys!!!
Thank you Snickerz! <3 It's truly an honor to receive an ask from you since your project was such a big inspiration!
Now that we have two new ref line ups, allow me to share with y'all some headcanons for some of them!
Rex/Kid Math
Most of our Kid Math takes are based off of FountainPenguin's two Kid Math fics: Factor It In and AlgoRythym. We just love those fics <3
Last name is Pemdas.
Non-binary. Really I just imagine most of the aliens in the show are some flavor of non-binary and Kid Math is no exception.
Autistic and has synesthesia. Same as Becky :) Comes with the territory of being from a subject obsessed planet and gaining superpowers on another world that overstimulates the senses.
His birthday (equivalent on Earth) is Pi day
He is so, so small. 3'7" (or exactly 110 centimeters!) tall. He looks more like he should be in Kindergarten/1st grade than 3rd grade.
More of a Hexagon headcanon than a Kid Math specific one: Hexagon is a very logical planet and as a result, when they do superhero work it's always 1) track down villain 2) get rid of villain 3) day is saved! Wordgirl's way of being a superhero would baffle ANYONE from Hexagon. Kid Math is just a product of his environment.
Mr Big + Leslie
Mr Big is trans.
His orientation is queer because we can't quite pin down what it is but he's definitely not straight.
Stands at 6'5". He's not called "Mr Big " for nothing!
Sees Dr Two-Brains on the weekends ever since their team up in Invasion of the Bunny Lovers. >:3
Leslie is a lesbian. We think she and the Mayor's assistant should kiss but not sure if it's canon to Exploration.
She's only 5'5" but wears 2 inch heels so you can't immediately tell.
Leslie's last name is Little. She's Leslie Little.
Both are in their early/mid 30's. Mr Big is only a couple years older than Leslie.
Granny May
She's been a villain the longest. Being a petty pickpocket since her late teens. Her "career" as a supervillian really took off though when she met her future husband.
Her husband was a man named Walter, who she met after charming her way into some fancy event. She stole his heart and his wallet that night <3
Walter made most of her gadgets that she uses today. Her suit of armor was his wedding present to her.
They got married later than most people from their time. Granny May was very hesitant about marriage at first. Worried it would affect her crime career since she relied mostly on her charm, which works better on suckers men when they think you're single.
Note: I really could go on and on about Granny's past but I'll leave off here because we have a whole episode planned for exploring her past ;)
Granny May has always been very small. In her prime she only stood at 5'1". In her old age she's now only 4'11".
Victoria Best
Dyes her hair. She's a natural brunette but since the rest of her family is blonde it's for the best (heh) that she match her family.
Her eyes are naturally blue but have an unusual red tint to the pupils and iris.
As of Exploration, she's currently taller than Becky at 4'9".
On the aroace spectrum but hasn't figured it out yet. She's the best at ignoring her feelings <3
We have big plans for her :)
Beatrice Bixby/Lady Redundant Woman
In her mid 30's.
Beatrice herself is aroace. Her clones are not. It drives her insane when one of them develops a crush because she doesn't get it.
Her clones are not perfect copies of her. She's had to recall one or two because they refuse to help in her crime sprees.
All her clones are effectively vegetarian because they can only consume ink. Ever since she became Lady Redundant Woman, Beatrice has had to supplement her own diet with ink every now and then. She can just change out her ink cartridge, but it's surprisingly cheaper to just eat ink. Also less of a hassle.
Lady Redundant Woman herself might also just be vegetarian. We haven't figured that out yet.
Tall woman. She stands at 6'1" plus her boots make her appear a couple inches taller. She looks shorter as Beatrice because of her Customer Service Slouch(TM).
She's ambidextrous.
Todd "Scoops" Ming
Hitting him with the trans beam. Came about because of that one episode where, aside from Bob, he was the only boy in the scouts group. We think he joined before he transitioned, and then when he did come out as trans the group wanted him to stay <3 Now he's one of the exceptions because it'd be rude to kick him and also all the other scouts will defend his place with their dying breaths.
Aside from Eugene May (because no one is gonna catch up with him), he's the tallest kid in 7th grade right now at 4'11".
While currently dating Violet, Scoops is bi and has had a couple crushes before Violet. His type seems to be blondes with weird eyes...
ale: we gave him ugly shoes because his top half is the only thing that needs to look presentable.
we obviously also fixed his skintone and haircut. we love you wordgirl, you did this kid so incredibly dirty.
we made his shirt blue because he's a little older now and Raven thought he deserved to have a different shirt.
Violet Heaslip
Her eyes are an unusual pinkish-purple color. Becky and Scoops think it's really cool.
She's currently the same height as Victoria.
Back in 4th grade/beginning of 5th grade she had a crush on Becky. She outgrew it halfway through the school year.
ale: we really just gave her an all-new detailed outfit because, as we realized after we finished her, her outfit is so.... plain for an art kid!
her pockets full of flowers are inspired by a piece of fanart showing the worg kids as elementary schoolers. the doodles on her skirt are inspired by a Dear Evan Hansen lyric.
gets a beret because she's an artist <3
i gave her warmly rainbow socks because i thought they'd look like something i'd see in a Justice as a kid.
TJ Botsford
"TJ" is short for Tim Jr.
His birthday is May 4th.
He's gay but hasn't figured it out yet. Got more important things to worry about such as how to grow the WordGirl Fan Club.
ale: made his skin darker to match with his parents, and his hair darker to match with his skin. and gave him a fade because, like. look at him. he would.
Tim and Sally Botsford (Do not separate <3)
Both are in their late 30's but Sally is older by a couple years.
Tim is just a little taller than average at 5'10", while Sally is close to average height at 5'4", but wears 3 inch heels to give herself that extra height. Makes her a little more intimidating at her job.
They met in college at the ice cream parlor from Whammer Anniversary <3 it was for some get together/study group and the two just clicked.
Their wedding anniversary is October 13th.
Tim is pan.
Tim's family specifically is of Ethiopian descent. It's why his spicier meals pack such a punch.
We mostly just like Sally the way she is <3
As we've mentioned before, Sally is Afro-Latina.
Shown in the episode That's Entertainment, Sally's hair actually becomes poofy and curly when not "blow-dried." Her hair is still like this (it's what inspired us to make her Afro-Latina), but we've decided that her hair becomes straightened through normal straightening means.
ale: made Tim's hair more afro-textured for obvious reasons. also it's canon that it used to look like that. also, he's graying more.
made Tim more brown because we couldn't live with keeping him orange.
i INSISTED that he keep his horrible outfit. everyone watching me draw him hated it, however, he is my "horrible fashion sense" king.
we mostly kept Sally the same, just made her skin more skin-tone like. also, we turned that weird line in her hair into a gray streak, because she's a little older now, and we couldn't figure out why it was there.
