i think it's interesting that ppl kinda forgot/took for granted that ratio's advice to aventurine at the end of 2.1 was the biggest indicator of how ratio feels for aventurine.
shipping aside, the first time we ever met ratio, he was arrogant, cryptic, and quite honestly so rude. i liked his design, his voice, and the way he carried himself in the trailblaze continuance, but i honestly thought he was an asshole.
it wasn't until his scene with screwllum that i found myself completely in love with his character.
from the very beginning of the "crisis", ratio had the answer and solution. his style of teaching is to present a problem and let his student(s) find the answer for themselves, giving little nudges of 'encouragement' (tho it wouldn't feel like it with how he conveyed those nudges) whenever they got stuck.
no easy way out, no spelling out the answer, and definitely not giving the solution for nothing. no one is in any real danger and even at the end when we fought to free asta, he was there to help.
in contrast, right after aventurine was put under Ena's influence by sunday (of which we thought was Xipe's), ratio met him outside immediately after, completely ignoring the fact that they were supposed to hate each other (which aventurine reminded him pointedly).
then he gave aventurine the scroll, marked by his personal owl crest.
there's a lot to unpack even by their dialogue alone. but when he gave aventurine this scroll, something that's distinguishably ratio, i was absolutely intrigued.
the title isn't mundanite's insight. and the note not only gave him the answer but also ratio's personal wish for aventurine to stay alive.
to me, this might as well have been a love letter.
ratio doesn't give out easy answers or easy solutions. throughout our adventure in the herta space station, ratio stayed as an objective observer for the most part.
but this mission in penacony had been full of uncharacteristic "softness" that we as the trailblazer aren't aware of. (remember, by the end of 2.1 we have no clue that ratio was even in penacony.)
this consideration that he's shown to aventurine is something that he never gives to anyone else. ratio views himself as a teacher for the mundane minds and he shows respect to the members of genius society. he teased us, the trailblazer, with a sort of mischievous intent to test how everyone involved in the herta space station would solve the issue of the disappearing staff members. (Dr. Ratio: Do you know what to do with cornered prey? Hunt it to the death. (he didn't have to be so sexy abt it goddamn))
but with aventurine, he was shown to be unsure, a bit more hesitant, a bit softer, and considerate.
i firmly believe that ratio shows his care in small, quiet ways that can be so easily overlooked and/or dismissed. couple that with how bluntly he talks, ppl tend to mischaracterise him as unfeeling, cold, and elitist. one of the many reasons ppl thought he hates aventurine.
but i would argue that his way of caring is actually compatible with aventurine's way of receiving care.
with his difficult past (a severe understatement tbh), aventurine tends to view his interactions with others as a game or a transaction. he gives money and presents to ppl who helped him bcs he doesn't want to feel indebted to anyone. he gambles his life easily bcs what's the point? with his family gone and his clan murdered, aventurine had nothing to live for. he was enslaved and treated like cattle. even joining the ipc only highlighted the fact that his life is teetering on a tightrope.
but ratio guides rather than pushes, and his most blatant display of favouritism is an inclusion of slot machines, wheel of fortune, and catcakes oven in the divergent universe. nothing physically tangible. (ofc, i hc the catcakes aventurine's keeping to be from ratio, but that's still more of a plausible explanation rather than fact.) even ratio's words of care are wrapped in sarcasm and banter, nothing outright for aventurine to deflect or deny.
little things, accumulating and piling up, slowly but surely, until aventurine is ready to trust and rely on ratio.
everything revealed bcs of ratio's note to aventurine. someone ratio would do anything and everything he could to help, to assure that in the vast universe they live in, someone genuinely wishes for aventurine to live after spending his whole life surviving.
in return, aventurine breaks ratio out of this self-imposed objectivity that his position created. too smart to be mundane yet not good enough to be a genius. an equal bcs of their unique, alienated places in the world.
and so, why make this long post? why point out smth that's already been analysed a long time ago?
well, bcs of the rise of archrn posts and memeing ratio that "his wife is stolen" or "doctor fight back!" that consequently brings abt ratiorine/aventio hate.
ratio has been fighting for aventurine. since before we even knew they had a relationship with each other. regardless of the nature of their relationship, be it romantic or platonic or queerplatonic, ratio has been carefully building and nurturing trust between aventurine and himself. i would like to think that even if some ppl don't ship ratiorine/aventio, they could at least see why the two of them are so good for each other.
so tldr; ship and let ship, but don't forget why ratio and aventurine is so popular as a pair. ofc, this is mostly aimed towards those who harassed ratiorine/aventio shippers by weaponising archrn. don't like don't read, muting, and blocking are free, so just have fun and don't ruin anyone else's enjoyment.
anyways, if you reach this point, thanks for reading! tbh, this is also an excuse for me to analyse ratiorine a bit more. i love them, they're my comfort couple. one of these days, i will gather up my willpower to actually analyse them separately and together to just gush abt why i love them so much.
thanks again and have a great time, wherever you are! 🩵
